  1. I grew up in Syracuse, really sad to see something like that happen there.

    It's also sad that laws crafted by the NYC folks prevent the rest of the state from protecting themselves. Should just take NYC and New Jersey and make them their own little People's Republic and let the rest of New York State go about its business.

    I have a lot of fond memories of Syracuse but I'd never consider moving back to New York state due to the politicians that have taken over. I could deal with the terrible winter weather, but high taxes and no guns? I think I'll pass.

  2. The Freedom of Information Act is a good thing on the whole, but cases like this give it a bad name. If you look at what types of information are exempt from FOIA requests, the gun owner data should never have been released: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_Information_Act_%28United_States%29

    "clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy." is the phrase used, I think this would qualify as a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.

    The New York state law is a little different: http://www.dos.ny.gov/coog/foil2.html

    The New York version has provisions to not release data if it would "if disclosed could endanger the life or safety of any person" and "disclosure of information of a personal nature when disclosure would result in economic or personal hardship to the subject party and such information is not relevant to the work of the agency requesting or maintaining it".

    If I were a New York gun owner and my name were on that list I'd be speaking to a lawyer right now. I'm not a lawyer and my understanding of the law may be flawed, but based on that information you might have a good case that New York state messed up when they released the data. Sicking lawyers on these people might be the only way to get the message across that harassing legal gun owners is not OK.

  3. This is my collection so far (minus the 1919a4 in x54R that's on the way to my FFL):

    IMG_0863.jpg

    ...I've got enough ammo and mags but want another gun purely for the hell of it...yes, I have an addiction (MAX limit: $1,800).

    What do you suggest that i get considering what I already have?

    Nice collection. For $1800 you could get quite a few things, I'd get a Ruger 10/22 and an SKS of some variety. Both of them are great guns for what they cost. .22lr will probably remain somewhat cheap even if we get a ban, and the SKS would share ammo with the AK so if you're already stocked up on that front you're all set. The SKS also doesn't need a detachable magazine so if we get a really over the top ban the SKS stands a better chance of still being kosher. Take the bayonet off and it looks like a "sporting rifle" (whatever that means).

    You could get both of those and have plenty left over out of that $1800 for more mags/ammo or other stuff.

  4. I wonder how NBC's ass-clown law firm will spin the 1st Amendment into their defense.

    I'm sure they'll try, 1st amendment just means the government can't stop you from speaking. It doesn't mean the people you slander publicly can't sue your pants off for doing it. Not only did they ruin Zimmerman's reputation (Christ, he had to go into hiding for a while because of what they did) they also pretty much ruined any chance he had at getting a fair trial. NBC's lawyers have their work cut out for them. I agree with GunFun, they will likely settle.

  5. This is why 0-tolerance policies are rarely the right answer to any problem. I can somewhat understand the policy, but things like this need to be handled on a case by case basis instead of just saying gun = find a new job. I get the feeling the policy is to discourage employees from bringing guns into work and potentially disturbing customers or coworkers, and potentially to guard them against lawsuits should someone bring a gun to work and do something stupid.

    This guy didn't even bring the gun into work, he left it in his car and only went to get his gun when it was a totally reasonable reaction to the situation he was in. He was trying to abide by the policy by not bringing it in, but when someone points a gun at you or your coworker the policy takes a back seat to protecting yourself and others.

    While what AutoZone did was completely legal, we have Good Samaritan laws for similar types of situations that prevent people from being prosecuted for trying to rescue people. Not sure if being held at gunpoint "counts" in terms of those laws, but the general idea is that you shouldn't be punished for trying to do rescue somebody.

    While AutoZone doesn't have any legal obligation, looking at the spirit of the law might show them what the right thing to do is.

  6. I have a TAKD adapter w/ a bullet guide installed. Before the bullet guide I'd occasionally have the same problem with rounds not coming in high enough. When I did my reading before buying the adapter I think I remember Texas AK designs saying it varies from gun to gun, some need the bullet guide with the adapter and some dont (perhaps he will chime in and clarify). Not sure if this applies with the Renegade Buck adapter or not.

    I did have to file a little bit off of the adapter after I installed the bullet guide to get the adapter to seat correctly. The .223 bullet guide I got from CSS sits out a little beyond the front trunnion, that little bit of overlap caused the adapter to not want to lock in, it was pushing up on the bottom of the front lip of the bullet guide when I inserted the adapter. 5 minutes with a dremel fixed that though, had to grind just enough off of the adapter that it would sit flush with the bottom of the bullet guide rather than pushing up on it.

    I use pmags in mine, the only small annoyance is that it can be hard to get the mag to lock in. I usually have to smack the bottom of the mag to get it to lock in place. I was wary about messing with the mag catch to fix it, hadn't considered that the top of the mag might actually be the problem, I'll have to look into that. On yours it was just the front corners of the mag that needed attention?

    I can try to get pictures of my setup if you'd like, all I have is a cellphone so it isn't easy to get great shots but I can give it a shot if you're interested.

  7. New here! I would like to purchase a Saiga .223, but only if I have the ability to use AR mags, which are abundantly easy to find.

    Are the adapters easy to come by? I have heard about very long delays in shipping them and difficulty receiving them, but on threads that were a couple of years old. Is that still a problem?

    When I ordered my TAKD adapter ~6 months ago, the website said it had a 1-2 week production time. I had it in my hands ~2 weeks after I ordered it so it was right. Great product, I've got no complaints about it.

  8. So I picked up a Chinese SKS this past weekend. There's a gun show next weekend and I had decided I was gonna get an SKS if the prices were right but I didn't like my odds with it being the first show around here since the election. I was perusing a local guns classified website this weekend and saw someone had put a Chinese SKS up for $300 near me, all numbers matching and it came with 100 rounds of Wolf ammo. After looking at some pictures I figured I'd jump on it as that was a pretty reasonable price compared to the last few gun shows I've been to.

    I'm glad I did, this thing seems to be in very good shape. Barrel looks almost unfired to me, no rust/pitting and very clean looking. The wood is in very good shape as well, a couple minor nicks but no major scratches or cracks.

    As I was looking it over at home, I did notice a couple things that I found odd. There's no manufacturer markings that I can find, just this Made in China engraving:

    gallery_36003_1118_1725229.jpg

    No Chinese lettering like I've seen on other Chinese SKSs.

    It also has a 5-digit serial and what appears to be a lower-case n on the sight leaf (Russian lettering maybe?):

    gallery_36003_1118_1493089.jpg

    Same serial shows up on the back of the receiver cover and bottom of the trigger guard. The trigger mechanism is milled, another sign that it is an older gun.

    I took the stock off (which has no serial at all on it anywhere) to look for markings on the barrel and elsewhere on the receiver, the only thing I could find is this marking close to the serial that either says "3D" or "30", hard to say:

    gallery_36003_1118_1011185.jpg

    There are also a couple of upside-down "2"s on the barrel, didn't take pics of those.

    It also has a blade bayonet (no serial that I can find), which from what I've read means it's an earlier Chinese model as they switched to the spike-style later:

    gallery_36003_1118_649458.jpg

    I'm not an expert on SKSs, all I know really is what I've read the past few days since I bought it. Most signs point to it being an early (1960 or earlier) Chinese SKS, but I'm not sure. Most postings I can find show an English letter before the serial on similarly dated guns, mine is just 5 numbers.

    I'm primarily concerned with how it shoots which I will find out soon, but it would be cool to know when this thing was made.

    Anyone have any ideas about when it was made?

  9. Just got back from my nearest wally-world. No panic buying here... the ammo shelves were more stocked than I've ever seen (most likely due to deer season opening this coming weekend).

    Same here, went to wally-world tonight to get some slugs, the ammo case was full and prices were the same as always. Also just ordered some 9mm online, same prices I paid last time I ordered a few months ago so the prices haven't gone up yet (at least at these places). I've been pondering getting a vepr in 7.62x39, I might decide to do that sooner rather than later.

  10. Yeah I'm about to break her down now !!!

    Guys I am thinking a bullet guide might be a good purchase -- I really like the arsenal circle 10mags. How exactly do I find out which one to order ? And are the 50rd mags extinct ? I did a search but nada ...

    Look right beneath the chamber at the trunnion, it will either be curved or flat. Once you figure out whether it is curved or flat you order the right bullet guide:

    Curved: http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1120/Saiga-223-Bullet-Guide/Detail

    Flat: http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1225/Saiga-AK47-223-556/Detail

    CSS even has pictures to help you figure out which one you have. Those links are for the kits, comes with the bullet guide, drill bit & tap. If you already have the bit & tap you can get just the guide from them. Not sure if you've ordered from CSS before, but they are ridiculously awesome. Between them and Mississippi auto arms you can get just about anything you need for your Saiga. I've ordered from both and both have good prices and ship quickly, can't really go wrong with either of them.

  11. I've got a BP-02 mount for my saiga .223. Holds zero when removing it and putting it back on. The quick release lever does loosen up a bit after several range trips, only takes a few minutes to adjust it and get it tight again though. The rest of the mount is built like a tank, it's a bit heavy as a result but you'd never manage to break the thing unless you really, really tried to.

  12. Im guessing that using US made mags wont put it into 922r, since it states about assembling from IMPORTED parts.

    Maybe, I'm not sure. The rest of the shotgun is imported, so you could make the argument you're assembling a shotgun from imported parts. This might be another one of those situations where no one can be sure until someone from BATFE writes a letter about it and even then it's just one agent's opinion.

  13. I've got a Chaos quad-rail on my S223:

    gallery_36003_1095_32040.jpg

    It is the one marketed for the 7.62 Saiga. Didn't have any problems getting it installed. My dumb ass didn't loctite some of the screws in like the instructions said, lost a few screws on the first trip to the range as a result. Put some new ones in and used loctite this time, haven't had any issues since.

    Great product Cameron.

  14. Are there any 922r issues when using the 10 round mag on a stock gun?

    Let me preface this by saying I am not a lawyer nor do I work for BATFE, nothing I'm about to say has any legal bearing. I'm merely someone who has a VEPR-12 on preorder and did some reading about 922r to try to figure this out.

    It's clear as mud like most things BATFE rules about. I spent some time reading the revised study yesterday, full version is here: http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/012611-study-on-importality-of-certain-shotguns.pdf

    The relevant part concerning what causes a shotgun to be banned from import is this:

    (1) Folding, telescoping, or collapsible stocks;

    (2) bayonet lugs;

    (3) flash suppressors;

    (4) magazines over 5 rounds, or a drum magazine;

    (5) grenade-launcher mounts;

    (6) integrated rail systems (other than on top of the receiver or barrel);

    (7) light enhancing devices;

    (8) excessive weight (greater than 10 pounds for 12 gauge or smaller);

    (9) excessive bulk (greater than 3 inches in width and/or greater than 4 inches in depth);

    (10) forward pistol grips or other protruding parts designed or used for gripping the

    shotgun with the shooter’s extended hand.

    Of note is here is that pistol grips for the trigger hand are not considered an "evil" feature anymore (it says as much in the full ruling I linked above). That change appears to be what allows us to import VEPR-12's (and probably Saiga-12s in their natural configuration) as long as none of the above features are on the gun when it is getting imported. I would assume this is also why it ships with a 5 round magazine, as that is the limit for a sporting shotgun.

    I cant find 922r on any official .gov website, however the relevant text can be found here: http://home.comcast.net/~navy87guy/home/922r.html

    Section 922 Paragraph R states:

    "It shall be unlawful for any person to assemble from imported parts any semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun which is identical to any rifle or shotgun prohibited from importation under section 925(d)(3) of this chapter as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes except that this subsection shall not apply to--

    (1) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for sale or distribution by a licensed manufacturer to the United States or any department or agency thereof or to any State or any department, agency, or political subdivision thereof; or

    (2) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for the purposes of testing or experimentation authorized by the Attorney General. "

    Thanks to the new ATF ruling (I know, I"m thanking the ATF for something, I'm as confused as you are), the VEPR-12 is no longer prohibited from import under 925(d)(3). The VEPR-12 is shipped with a 5-round magazine which still qualifies as a sporting shotgun under 925(d)(3). My understanding of the above is that if you put a magazine of more than 5 rounds into the VEPR-12 you're assembling a shotgun that would've been prohibited from importation and therefor the 922r parts count applies.

    Take that for what you will, as I said I'm no lawyer and I do not work for BATFE, just my understanding of the law as it stands now.

  15. The "built-in bullet guide" is in reference to the tab at the front of these, the mags are unmodified. If you've got a Saiga 223 with no bullet guide these should work with no modification on your part. I'll edit main post for pics.

    As for the shipping, I'm using the USPS flat rate boxes for these. The small box is ~$5 and it would hold one of these mags, if I'm selling these out 1 at a time I'd like the buyer to pick up the cost for that. If I'm selling all of em to one person I'll eat shipping for that. Sorry if there's confusion there, I'll edit the original post to clear that up. If you want just the 1 I can do it for $25.

  16. I have 6 lightly used SGM Saiga 223 30 rd magazines with the built-in bullet guide for sale. For use in Saigas without a bullet guide installed, if you have a bullet guide you can dremel the built-in guide off of the mags. Each magazine has had ~100 rounds put through them, minor cosmetic wear where the mags make contact with the gun, they function flawlessly. The rifle that used these now uses AR magazines so I no longer have a use for them.

    Asking $20/each + shipping or all 6 for $100 shipped, or we can do FTF if you happen to be in Northern VA. No sales to CA,NY,MA,MD,NJ.

    Will accept PayPal gift or USPS money order.

    Edit for pics, here is the one in the worst condition of the lot:

  17. I can't speak for the tech sights as I haven't used them, but I did recently replace the rear sight leaf on my S223 with a krebs peep sight. I've only been to the range once since doing this but I much prefer it over the stock rear sight leaf. The aperture is a bit bigger around than on my AR, but that isn't a bad thing IMO.

    As Stryker mentioned in his post, installation can be a bit of a pain but once it's on it isn't going anywhere. Added benefit is that it doesn't do anything to mess with field stripping the rifle, dust cover still works the same as it always has.

    I have definitely been thinking of getting one of those for my WASR more so than my .223. I want to keep my WASR as pure as possible, but I really don't like the rear sight. But the .223, I could definitely be fine with getting away from a traditional AK. Does the Krebs rear sight seem to have any draw backs? I've heard the thickness of the ring impedes seeing objects around a target at a good distance?

    When looking down the sights the ring actually overlaps the shroud (maybe not the right word, the round bits around the front sight) perfectly so I wouldn't think that it would obscure anything that the shroud isn't already obscuring. It is a complete circle so it would obscure things above where the front sight post is to some degree, but the same is true of an AR and I've never found it to be a problem. The range I shoot at only has a 75yd range so I don't get to shoot any further than that, haven't had any problems at that distance though.

    The only downside I can think of is that the size of the sight isn't adjustable at all. It's one solid chunk of metal so it is what it is, if you don't like the size of the ring you're pretty much SOL (as far as I know anyways, maybe someone has a way to modify these that I'm not aware of). The lettering/numbering on the leaf is also different from what you would see on the stock sight so if you're a purist that might bother you, but then again if you're a purist you probably wouldn't be putting a peep sight on an AK anyways. The lettering isn't filled in at all which can make it hard to see what distance the sight is set to, but there are plenty of easy ways to fix that if needed.

    I'll be putting these on any future AKs I buy unless I decide to get one as close to the "real thing" as possible.
