  1. I also want to point out that the "corrosive" surplus isn't that corrosive. Now I keep my rifle wet with oil when I shoot it, so that may help the corrosion issue, but I have left a rifle uncleaned a couple days and found no rust. And in past rifles long gone, mostly Ruger Mini 14 and 30, as well as a SAR2 all using Wolf, supposedly not corrosive, I have had rust issues to the point of effecting the function of the rifle. I honestly don't think 7n6 is much if any more corrosive than the typical Wolf or Bear brands, in my experience anyway.
  2. As long as they import surplus I will buy it. Ironic, I'm buying bullets made in the Cold War by a former enemy with the purpose of killing me, but it is turning out as the happiest of possible endings. Excellent round and rifle though. Russians/Soviets did some things very well.
  3. What does Arsenal use in their SGL 31 conversions? They seem to have a good reputation.
  4. Thanks for the info. I was hoping to try to drill and tap it, and since I am not set up for welding, and have not welded anything for 35 years, I plan on using that as the backup plan. I also read on another thread how the ramps some sell are not thick enough to raise the bullet, so people add a #6 or #8 washer under the bullet ramp. If I drill it and use a screw I will be able to adjust the ramp as such as needed. I also noticed that some ramps have no grooves to funnel the bullet, just a flat ramp. My previous AK has grooves.
  5. I don't think it's hard, and I have never done it. Go to Carolina shooting supply and they have the ramps with drill and rap kits for $20 or so, and instructional video on the website. There are other outfits that do so as well.
  6. I contacted the seller, who has been wonderful. The only marking on the rifle other than the original Russian markings is RWC group LLC, but the seller says that Century, yes Century International Arms, is the importer, which is making sense. I guess Century did more than just supply the ugly M-74 buttstock. Looks like things have not changed.
  7. Suggestions? I'm inclined to order from Carolina Shooters supply, do it myself and be done with it.
  8. Is this a round bullet ramp? That was tack welded onto a flat trunnion?
  9. OK, you guys are NOT going to believe this. And anyone who buys one of these should know what I experienced. Pictures to follow. For background, I have owned and worked on several AKs. I am not an expert as many on this site, but I am not new to the AK, partly thanks to the experience on this site. I have seen this model of Saiga 5.45x39 on several places, and wanted one for a long time. The boat oar buttstock and pistol grip looked cheap so I got a Hogue grip and Tapco stock, which is very nice. The hammer forged chrome lined barrel and the newer unmodified front end appealed to
  10. The hump on the front ramp looks like the Interarms Tantal I have, which has never jammed, compared to the ramp that has a flat front on my Saiga which jams, and I am working on as I type.
  11. I just bought one, getting it next week. What do people think of this conversion? My initial impression is the Century butstock and pistol grip has to go. I ordered the Tapco traditional black butstock and Hogue grip. Thinking about an -affordable- red dot and laser, but have to sell an older gun first.
  12. In Soviet Union, film annihilates YOU! That right there was the funniest thing today. Made me laugh, thanks.
  13. Call it a weakness? -LOL I think Americans have the same weakness... So I imagine it is the paint I am taking off. Man that is some weak paint!
  14. It seems to me there was some leaflet warning of some chemical preservative on a NIB .308 Saiga which I promptly threw out. I then just did a once over with the standard oil and gun cleaning supplies and called it good. While using 'non-acetone' nail polish remover to assist in the highlighting of engraved markings on the gun I notice a lot of blue or black coming off. Is this the preservative they were trying to caution about or am I taking off the paint?
  15. What stock is that? I am thinking of this exact gun some day, as long as it also has the mag mod done as well, with the bullet ramp and mag release adjustment.
