Syndicate, I sent you a PM. Let me know if you get it. Ten cents each or an ounce of shot sounds good to me.

Substituting 12 Gauge Shot And Slugs
Groovy Mike replied to Squishy's topic in Reloading and Ammunition
I'll take a look and try to get a pic. I did not even take them out of the hull so beyond "white" I don't have much to give you. BTW - I found that while the Lee mold seems to work just fine in the direct swap into the shot cup (in my very limited test) the slug from the Lyman mold does not. It's hollow base needs to expand for accuracy. I am experimenting with a fiber wad that will fill and expand the base instead of a plastic shot cup that just pushes the slug ahead of it. Results from a better idea to follow.... -
If you've got the shot, I can use it. But heck I can use cash too. I'm just not sure what the slugs would be worth..... You will have created an "express load." The 7/8 oz slug will have a velocity faster than the 1 1/8 oz shot. It is safe and there is no pressure issue because you have substituted a LIGHTER load for a heavier one, but don't go the other way. You are always safe to put less weight in front of the charge, but don't swap a heavier load in or the pressure will rise.

I use my reloading press to recrimp, but your way will work too. Watch classifieds and gun shops for an old press. I bought mine for $10.... Yes they WILL recycle shot up jugs ...and I just scored about 400 pounds of lead

I'm writing a review of the Saiga 12 for a hunting themed website. The review poses the question of whether the S12 is practical as a gun to take afield for hunting or just a mall ninja anti-zombie toy. If anyone has photos (that you actually have the rights to use!) that you would like to see worked into teh review. Please let me know. If I can work them in, I will. Thanks, Mike

I'm using these. Extra full works well for trap shooting and "full" seems to handle slugs just fine.

He might have a mold that needs to cool and contract before the slugs will reliably drop out. I did not have that problem, but it can happen especially if the inside of the mold is rough. As a side note, If you find that the crimp tends to reopen on its own after you have reassembled them - you can stop that with a couple drops of candle wax.... If I can find a camera and remember to do so, I'll take some pics.

Substituting 12 Gauge Shot And Slugs
Groovy Mike replied to Squishy's topic in Reloading and Ammunition
Right. Your theory is correct. You do not want the slug (or shot) to give room for the wad to move back and forth inside the crimped shell. That could result in the powder not all burning at the same time. This would result in poor performance from the load. You want the wad to sit tight against the powder, and the shot or slug to sit firmly against the wad. The crimp should hold it all in place on the top end. You may need some filler (cream of wheat, commercial buffer, over shot cardboard wad, etc. to get that tight fit depending on what crimping method / wad selection / hull / and l -
I rec’d my new Lee one ounce 12 gauge slug mold in Friday’s mail. Saturday I cast a couple dozen slugs and was delighted with the performance of the mold. I was eager to try the slugs so took the expedient route of dumping the one ounce load of #8 shot from factory loaded Remington "Game Load" shells. Without changing the load I inserted my shiny new slugs in the shot cups and re-crimped the shells. They crimped beautifully and were indistinguishable from the original factory loaded shells. When I had three of them loaded I took them out with my Saiga 12 and a plain cardboard box. I set the bo

You should insert you rslug into the shot cup and give it a tap with the wad seater in your reloading press (or a dowel and mallet) to seat it firmly against the shot cup. It SHOULD stay there, and based on my results (below) the one ounce slug should fill the same amount of space as the one ounce of shot allowing for a good crimp. If you are swapping one sized shot for another and using teh same weight of shot (for example one ounce of #4 for one ounce of #8) just dump it in. Buckshot is typically "stacked" just so all the pellets fit. Dump it in and shake it, it will stack itself. I -
Looking for a power adapter for my Forster trimmer http://www.midwayusa.com/product/644779/forster-case-trimmer-power-adapter?cm_vc=1100BrandPopProd anybody got one they are not using? Figured I 'd ask here before ordering one.

I don't roll crimp, factory loads are usually star crimped. So I star crimp. Rogers - give me a PM if you want to swap. I picked up lead at the salvage yard today and plan to cast some slugs tomorrow. I will be using the Lyman mold. I just ordered a Lee mold too so I can test them both after dumping shot from the factory loaded hulls.

You guys are making me want to run a mag full through my saiga!
-
Here is what I am going to do - I am going to the scrap yard this weekend and buying 100 pounds of lead if the price is still decent. Then I will convert it into slugs. If anybody is interested in buying some or trading for them give me a shout.
-
At least in NY - lead is getting hard to find / expensive because the nanny state has now outlawed the sale or real lead wheel weights.....

They date back to the 1800s, but they do make new ones. In fact I have a box on the shelf that take either rifle or pistol primers instead of 209s. The advantage in using them today is that teh all brass hulls can be reloaded several hundred times - long after your plastic hulls wear out.
-
If there was a thread it may have been deleted - I don't see one. If it is against the rules I have no problem pulling it down - but come on a chance at a free Saiga why not share !

Sounds good to me! I'll take #7-8 for trap shooting or better yet #5 for turkeys! As for an easy way to open the crimped shells - all you need to do is get a pair of needle nose pliers. Grab the shell in your left hand, slid one side of the pointed plier tip into the center or the crimp and pry it open. Then slip the closed pair of pliers into the opening and quick spin it around teh outside edge. The crimp will unfold perfectly and you can pour the shot out leaving the wad in place to receive the next payload.

That's a fine offer, will we loose on shipping? USPS flat rate box is $11 for up to 70 pound weight. A 25 pound bag of shot leaves a lot of room inside. I'd say that the medium falt rate box could easily hold 35-40 pounds of shot and/or slugs. So the cost per slug would be negligible.

If you guys need slugs, I'll happily swap you equal weight of my slugs for your shot.
