So, filing down the magazine catch for regular AK mags to fit is legal but modifying the magazine to fit the Saiga is illegal? Seems to me to be six of one and half a dozen of the other.

If you install the feed ramp both the stock Saiga mags and regular AK mags will function in your rifle when you file down the tang on the AK mags. If you file down the mag catch the Saiga mags will fit very loosely and will probably fall out after the 1st shot. Every type of AK mag I have seen has a small indentation at the top of the groove in the front of the magazine below the front projection. This indentation is some times barely noticeable and sometime easy to see depending on where the mag was manufactured. If you do not want to file your mag catch, you can file down the magazine rear tang a little at a time to fit and it will fit but have a slight amount of play in the mag well. Usually the mags will function OK this way. However, if you want a tight fit with no play, and complete reliability fill the small indentation I mentioned with a

A fast moving lighter soft point bullet is preferable for hunting game like deer. Hollow points would be a second choice and FMJ a distant third choice. AK 47 battle sights are sighted at 25 meters and will be within a 16 inch circle out to 400 meters. Set your Saiga iron sights on the 100 meter mark and fire 3 shot groups at a 25 meter target, gradually adjusting the front sight until they hit center of the target.
