  1. G O B's comment about production lines made me remember a point I've been worried about. Do we have (or can we create) enough production capacity for a big war again? Having a design for the best plane, rifle, or ship or sub is no good if you can't make it quickly enough or enough of them.
  2. I guess what I'm saying is I hope today's technology gets applied in the simplest manner possible in order to ensure reliability. As for actual combat, you don't want a fighter pilot to experience information overload, or failing missiles, or jamming guns. With regards to equipment & performance, I'm mindful of how "high-tech" American jets could get shot down by simpler MiGs and their cannons - and they did. The theory of missile engagements sounded great in the 1950s & 60s, but missile technology was immature. I just hope we're not repeating the same kind of mistake by thin
  3. First, I hope it's ok to start a new thread. I'd just like to add my two cents worth about the F-35/modern ACM environment debate as a life-long aviation nut, the son of a Marine jet & helicopter pilot, and (for what it's worth) the grandson of a Battle of Midway B-17 pilot & Pearl Harbor survivor. However, I am not a military pilot or defense sector worker so please pardon me if I sound totally ignorant. I just have a good eye for big picture stuff, and a sense for history. I'm sort of on the outside looking in. The issue with regards to the Air Force seems to be cultural - no
  4. Hi Guys: Given that this website is primarily about Saiga rifles, I am glad to say I'm a Saiga .223 owner. It's a sweet gun. My philosophy being a gun with the .223 cartridge's better accuracy and AK-47 reliability & toughness is a good gun to own. However, I am aware of how the .308 is a much more powerful cartridge. So ... my first question is are Saiga .308s still available anywhere? Or did Obama ban them? If so, will they be imported again? I think a Saiga .308 is what I should've gotten, but my thinking was .223 ammo is less expensive to shoot. I currently buy Federal GMM.308
  5. Hello: I've been thinking these would be good items to have. Looking for recommendations for good semi-auto .22LR pistol, rifle, and suppressor combinations. Main reason being you can carry a lot more .22LR ammo than bigger calibers. Thinking in terms of some sort of survival situation ... just in case. I admit I'm getting concerned about N. Korea and the whole E.M.P. scenario. I do have faith in our armed forces though. Meanwhile, I'm glad .22LR and WMR are back on the market again. Just figure I should have suppressed guns too. I have a Savage 93FV .22WMR, but it's an unsuppr
  6. I just don't know what to think or say other than my heart goes out to the families of those who were killed or wounded. Hillary's myopic, knee-jerk statement is hopefully a final nail in the coffin for her. Rest assured the Democrats will spin this with exaggerated emotional assertions to score cheap political points, use it to push issues that have no direct bearing on this shooting and the shooter, and blame everyone & everything except the shooter himself. One Democrat is trying to do so on FOX news already as I write this. As usual, he's asserting something feminine in nature
  7. Incredibly, we've had just barely more than 1/2" of rain in the gauge where I live. It's been a good, soaking rain for us. There's been more wind than anything else.
  8. Hey Everybody: I have a week of vacation coming in late August and I want to visit Pikes Peak for the first time. It's a place I've always wanted to visit. I've never been to Colorado and I'm overwhelmed by relevant websites. I'm not a "granola" type, but I do like tent camping and hiking. I have a tent, a sleeping bag, a Coleman stove, fuel, canteen, a walking stick, and a lantern. Knives too of course. Big Ontario SP models and a K-BAR. I just thought I'd ask if anyone has recommendations and advice about where to go camping and which trail to take to the summit. I'm in good shap
  9. Hello: I want to share how I met a one of our nation's heroes today. A new patient at my hospital is a former B-17 crewmember. He said he was with the 303rd Bomb Group out of England. Man ... this guy saw a lot of action in the air. He actually fired .50 caliber guns at Luftwaffe fighters. Of course, it wasn't fun having them shooting back at you. He literally kicked hung bombs out, and experienced belly landings too. It was a miracle he was never wounded, but came awfully close many times. Of course, he saw many who weren't as lucky. He said he'll never forget seeing bullet holes and 20mm
  10. Hey Guys: It has occurred to me I can probably put a can on my Savage 10 FCP-K. This version came with a factory muzzle brake that can be screwed off. There are flats for a wrench. I assume I don't need to get some sort of "SR" version of the Savage 10 when I can go ahead and put a can on mine. Just take the muzzle brake off and screw on a can. Then re-zero it. So ... who makes good .308 suppressors? Also, who makes good .22 suppressors too? I've heard of Silencerco (?), but I'm sure there are other brands. I ask simply because I am not familiar with the suppressor market. I'm lat
  11. Hello: I've noticed two versions of a Savage 10 .308 rifle. I wonder why they exist and if there is any real difference in accuracy. Both have 24" barrels. The first version has a straight, heavy barrel with a 1:10 twist. The newer version has a threaded, slightly tapered heavy barrel with 5R rifling and a 1 : 11.25 twist. My question is why would the twist rate be changed? Doesn't a faster twist rate stabilize a bullet more and therefore is more accurate? Just wondering.
  12. Hello fellow forum members: About today's shooting: I am glad no good guys were killed. The shooter got what he deserved. However, I'm just not surprised he was on the political left. I'm just not surprised. I wish someone would write a book explaining the left's collective mentality. Sort of "The Psychology of the American Left for Dummies." I sense so many parallels between what our nation endures from the left and what I've had to tolerate from many women (not all) in my family or at work. The only difference is scale. Both tend to "catastrophize" moments when things don't
  13. Hello Everyone: I'm coming clean. I'm confused about how to use tactical scope reticles. I know how to sight-in a scope to 100 yds., set the knobs back to zero, and that's it. I know somehow you're supposed to use a reticle to estimate range. Somehow that estimation is used to determine bullet drop based on ballistic table data. Then that drop is used to determine how many clicks to set on your elevation dial. I hope it sounds like I have a correct basic understanding, but the truth is I find it confusing. As mentioned in a prior posting, I have an SWFA scope with their MRA
  14. Hey Everybody: I already own a Savage .308 rifle. It's the Savage 10 FCP-K with an SWFA 12x scope on it. It's been a good rifle. My first three shots almost clover-leafed with Remington 150gr. UMC ammo. I can't wait to fire Federal GMM 168 gr. SMKs out of it. Recently, however, I've become very interested in another Savage .308 rifle - the Model 10 FCP HS Precision. It's supposedly more accurate and comes in two versions I've seen on Buds Gunshop. The conventional one has a 24" straight heavy button-rifled barrel. The more expensive version has a slightly tapered 24" 5R barre
  15. I just wish .22 Magnum would come back to stores too. I see .17 HMR and .22 LR everywhere. Why no .22 Magnum?
  16. Hey Everyone: First, I offer my condolences about the loss of Racegal120 too. I just don't know what else to say. I'm an x-ray tech. I don't deal with patients quite as much as nurses and doctors. I do help nurses as much as I can (like repositioning patients in bed, or helping get them to a toilet). However, I have witnessed sad moments because I have to respond to emergencies too. I don't know what the deal is, but for the first time in almost a decade since I've been at my little hospital we're having several families lose loved ones during the holiday season. Incredibly, pneumonia
  17. Re: highplainsdrifter's comment: Yeah! Duh on my part. Let's get Saigas imported again. I still want a Saiga 12.
  18. Hello Everyone: I am glad and relieved Trump won the election if only to stop Hillary. I hope the following will happen in no particular order: 1) the truth about Fast & Furious will be exposed 2) the truth about the IRS scandal will be exposed 3) the truth about Benghazi will be exposed 4) the truth about Obamacare will exposed 5) those who broke laws during the Obama years (including Obama) will be prosecuted 6) the ammo market (especially for .22 magnum) will return to normal 7) fences will be mended with our allies - especially Israel, Poland, and the Ba
  19. Just looking for opinions. This is not a new a rifle by Savage. It's been out for a while. I can't afford a custom rifle. I already have Savage's FCP-K in .308, but the FCP HS Precision Stock version of the Model 10 seems to be a real tack driver with (of course) the kind of stock it has and its untapered heavier barrel. I'm not a trained marksman (just a regular guy) so I need every built-in advantage possible. The FCP-K is really good with Federal GMM ammo, but I figure the FCP HS Precision is even better based on what I've seen surfing the internet. As always, I thought I
  20. I heard on the radio that the Secret Service calls Hillary's jet the following: "BROOMSTICK ONE"
  21. Seems like they always make a left-hand version. Surely, it can be special ordered if you really want one.
  22. Thanks GunFun. I learned something. Putting science aside, screwing a suppressor onto the end of these will make them look really cool. Put a tactical scope on top and they'll look even cooler. You gotta look "tacticool" at the range.
  23. Hey Everyone: I think that at a fundamental level it boils down to this: Trump is for America. Hillary is against America. Trump wants to serve. Hillary wants power. Trump doesn't have blood on his hands.
  24. Hey Guys: I just saw one of the Savage Stealth rifles at a local store yesterday. It looks really cool and sounds like it's a good rifle. I saw the 6.5 mm Creedmore version with a 24" barrel. Don't know why the .308 version will have a shorter 20" barrel. I still like the Model 10 FCP with the HS Precision stock and a 24" barrel that's heavier, and already comes with three swivels. However, the Stealths come with a 10-round magazine and the barrels are threaded for suppressors or muzzle brakes. I can't decide between these and the Model 10 McMillan. Seems everyone says the Mc
