  1. But, it's for an ASSAULT RIFLE! EEEK! I don't got no steenkin assault rifle! I got a sporting rifle. Shame on Sportsman's Guide.
  2. That ought to be a spring loaded keeper on the dust cover release button. I think it's really a nice thing to have. I've tried some dust covers which had rails on 'em and they all needed a keeper like that to keep the recoil from knocking the dust cover, rail and scope/red dot off. I was quick enough to catch it the first time.
  3. Just a bit off subject, the Monarch 9 X 18 stuff is really ACCURATE in my Makarovs. I shoot a lot of cheap Silver Bear hollowpoint for practice, but compared to that, the Monarch is target ammo, up to the accuracy levels of CCI and Bernal hollowpoints in that caliber.
  4. I asked essentially the same question, and got a great response from Cobra 76 Two. http://forum.saiga-1...onverted-saiga/ He's got a great web site! I have yet to follow up, though.
  5. I see the 7.62 X 39 as a 200 yard point blank self defense/hunting round. While the Saiga platform may be more accurate and the pointed bullets more aerodynamic than a .30-30, I don't believe the gun/cartridge combination would be practical for more distant use. Sure, it it's all I had, I'd want to scope it. Mine wears a red dot, with back-up peeps. I have a CZ 527 in that caliber which is wonderfully accurate. With a fixed 6 X scope, it'll give prarrie dog groups at 100 yards. It's really fun to shoot, but that setup calls for larger targets after about 150 yards in order to make a h
  6. I use different bore snakes/cleaning brushes for black powder and corrosive primers to avoid possible contamination of guns which use smokeless non-corrosive ammo. Too anal?
  7. Yeah, I made it to the range today. Great weather, not crowded, some guns shot great! The SKS with the scope did acceptably well at 50 yards with the 154 grain Wolf softpoint, but not at 100. Couldn't get more than 5 rounds off the stripper clips into the 20 round after market fixed magazine. Think I'll put back the original mag. The Paratroop shot it's illuminated sight loose, no joy there, either. Both rifles did, however, function 100% with the heavier grain ammo. Friend with 7.62 barreled Mauser fitted with shell shrinker to take 7.62X39 tried some, and he, too, got increas
  8. I must modify this earlier judgment. Lone Eagle reported this stuff did better in his SKS and SKS Paratroop, so I grabbed a couple of boxes and my Norinco SKS for a range visit Monday. I've got a cheap 4X on top with a lace-on cheekpiece and shot decent groups at 25 and 50 yards with that scope, parallax set to 100 yards, most likely. Just loaded some stripper clips and plan to try the stuff at 100 yards tomorrow, will report when it's done. Have to say, I only make it to the range in about 30% of my planned visits...
  9. I've decided to stick with the original wood on my Saiga .308. It fits me well and I like the look. But, that factory trigger...oooohhhh! So, what improved fire control group will replace that creepy mess, give me a lower Russian parts count and not require that I move the trigger reach from where it is now? Keeping the original wood, I have no desire to get a new fire control system that will require me to move the trigger guard. Yeah, I know about the AK original handling characteristics. It's just for the .308 that I'm asking, not my 7.62X39 or my 5.45X39.
  10. I tried the Wolf 154 grain soft point in my Saiga and in a CZ 527 carbine. Can't report on groups, but accuracy was so much worse than any of the lighter bullets that the rest of that ammo is now trading/plinking material.
  11. If it's been flogged to death, it's because everyone concerned with self defense has opinions that affect his or her safety. In the interest of trying to discover an answer to this particular question, I endeavor to record here my own thoughts. First, this is the 7.62 X 39 forum of Saiga-12. I will limit myself to that firearm and the ammunition for it. The Yugo military surplus round is popular because it tumbles easily and more quickly than other 7.62 X 39 cheap ammo. I don't like that it is corrosive. The Wolf Military Classic hollow point is well regarded because it has been
  12. I couldn't find it in any of the posts I looked at on the Saiga forums, so I asked diffen.com. They said: "Magazines "Magazines for both rifles are similar except for the minor changes in dimensions to accommodate different size cartridges. AK-74 magazines are polymer, and have a raised horizontal rib on each side of the rear lug to prevent their use in a 7.62x39mm AK." So, please help me here if I'm off base. I already missed out on the group buy of 45 rounders. Does this mean my 7.62X39 magazines will hold and feed the 5.45? And in an emergency I could shave off the horizo
  13. Depending on the way it groups at what you believe to be your maximum engagement distance, it may be worth keeping as a close combat/home defense weapon. I'd rather have one of those for home defense than a pump 12!
  14. Thanks, Mr. Rat. I just took your experience based advice. fflincher - US-made polymer furniture set - US-made Arsenal double stage trigger - US-made AK 74 brake - AK 74 front sight block - AK handguard retainer (with corresponding notch in barrel) - gas block with vents - AK gas tube - standard sight leaf - riveted bullet guide - riveted, integrated trigger guard/mag catch. - all of the unsightly leftover holes are seemlessly welded up or otherwise done away with - lousy paint job added I think that's about everything. I've got the SGL31-61 and a Saiga 5.45 w
