I finally got out this past Sunday to shoot the Hawken. I have to say that I was a bit intimidated by a guy one point over that was shooting a more modern BP rifle. He was popping a 3" group @ 100yds and seemed pretty disappointed. I hadn't loaded a black powder rifle in my life. My experiance was 9 months working @ Colonial Williamsburg back in the mid 70's firing muskets with paper wads for tourists. I ambitiously started out @ 50 yds with no paper after 3 shots. Moved in to 25 yds- no paper. At 15 yds I had 4 shots touching @ 6 O'clock on the 7 ring. At this point the gun was pre

My certificate said 108 mm. That puts it over 4"s. The first time out, while trying to zero my scope, I fired this group with Wolf FMJ ammo @ 100 yds. This is close to a 3" group. I think that I will do a little better next time. Excuse the target but it's what I had.

No, the gun isn't particularly interesting at least not as a collectible. It's not especially beautiful either. (except to me) What is interesting about this gun though is that I purchased it as a kit nearly 30 years ago and I just finished it today! I picked up this Thompson/Center Hawken .45 cal. kit sometime in 1976 for $99 after I was married and before two children. The stock was finished in short order and the barrel flats were ¾ complete when family responsibilities made it a low priority. Congrats on the new .223! I have the 20.5" and have only put about 50 rounds thru it. It is awesome. I have already ordered the parts to convert it into a Dragunov "style" with a forward FCG, U.S. gas piston and Choate stock. I will be all set to go to hi-caps if I want in the future. I bought the 4 X 24 for my .223. I didn't see the need for a 1000 meter scope since I will be firing at 100 meters the majority of the time. Mine will remain stock also. If I need the 200 or 300 meter chevrons, I got 'em.

Hello to all . I am new to the Forum and have read almost all of the posts in the last few days. I will be picking up my new Saiga .223 next week and the wait is driving me crazy. Saiga-12.com has helped take the "edge" off and given me a lot of useful information to boot. Thanks for the great posts. I do have one question (I'll have lot's more later) I have not seen addressed on the .223. Is the installation of a recoil supressor desirable on this rifle? Will it prevent damage to the receiver as advertised? What brand would you recommend?
