  1. Bubba Zanetti, I was out of town for the week and didn't have a chance to check the sight while I was gone. Thanks for the links. I really like the traditional look of the scout rifle in wood and can't wait to do something like that with my own rifle in the future.
  2. Bubba Zanetti, here is a link to the Tech Sight website. http://www.tech-sights.com/ak.htm I use their sights on my Kel Tec SU-16, and I can tell you that they make a quality product. That is a beautiful rifle. I have an IZ-132 that I bought a couple of years ago, and I didn't want to take it out of its original configuration, either. I actually bought another Saiga that was already converted from Classic Firearms so that I could keep the first rifle original. I really like what you did with yours, and I am really glad to see one done like it. Doing something similar has actual
  3. +1 to that advice. When I used the Tapco on my IZ-132 for the first time, I put some CLP on the front sight base to ensure that it would move. Be very careful to make sure that the contact point for your sight adjuster is carefully lined up with the sight block if you encounter any resistance. I have heard some accounts of people ruining their sight adjustment tools because they didn't line them up properly, and they ended up pressing against the non-moving part of the sight block. Also, if the sight starts to move and then doesn't want to move, try adding a little more oil and then mov
  4. That looks great, Saiga FL. How is your muzzle break attached? Did you change the FSB to a Bulgy one that has the threaded part up front, or did you cut the muzzle shroud off and thread the barrel itself? Also, I have been wondering about those side-mount scope bases. When you clean your rifle, do you remove the base from the side mount and then put it back in place with the zero staying solid? Or do you leave it on there and slide the top cover out from underneath it?
  5. You are right about the need for a wrench. Thanks for the compliment on the handguards.
  6. Thanks for the tips on installing new handguards. My new gas tube from Desert Fox arrived in the mail, yesterday, and I had some time to file down the ends to begin fitting it last night, finishing the last of it, today. It fits with almost no wiggling, now. I have to say that the top half of the handguards was a bear to put on there, and I blistered my fingers before I finally used a tool to finish rotating it onto the gas tube. Now that it's all on there, it sure looks nice. All I have to do, now, is get something to make the finish on the gas tube match the rest of the rifle and then L
  7. Tapco makes a handy front sight adjustment tool that will adjust your windage with no problem. I bought one for my IZ-132 a couple of years ago, and it made windage adjustment a breeze. Don't get a new leaf--IMHO, the nice thing about the AK-type front sights is that once you adjust windage once, you never will have to do so again. If you get a new leaf, you'll lose that advantage.
  8. I had the same problem that 18Steel was having, and I am glad to have seen your post. I just now placed an order for one of those tubes. @ W8Lifter, thanks, in advance, for the tip about the lengths on those tubes.
  9. From what I have read, it seems that you can use a pipe cutter to cut the muzzle shroud loose from the FSB and then thread the barrel underneath. Besides aesthetics and the ability to have a bayonet mount, is there any reason to change the FSB in its entirety, instead of cutting the shroud lose from it?
  10. I have an unconverted IZ-132 that I bought when I lived in Kaliforniastan, and I wanted to keep my rifle completely unmodified in order to avoid running afoul of the law. In order to save money, I converted some Tapco 10-rounders because they were a lot cheaper than the SGM tactical ones that were specifically for Saigas. In the attached pictures, you will see where I built up the front of the magazines with JB Weld, so that they have the same profile as a regular OEM Saiga magazine. I then filed down the tab in back so that they would lock in. They work just as well as the original magazi
  11. Crap. I guess I bought something unnecessary. At least it was only $6.00. I'm glad you mentioned the spring on the gas tube. If you hadn't, I probably would have ended up doing a lot of head scratching, followed by some expletives about them having sent me a gas tube that was too short :-p Thanks for the insight on that.
  12. Thanks for the tip on Carolina Shooters Supply. I just put in an order for the K-Var hand guard set, which looks pretty much just like the Arsenal ones that I saw on Midway. I also bought the lower retaining bracket and the lower tension spring. They're out of the gas tubes, though, and so is Midway. I guess I'll have to wait a bit for that part, but at least I've got this thing moving in the right direction.
  13. That sounds pretty doable. As far as the AK-74 gas tube goes, am I correct in assuming that its length and diameter at the very ends will allow the piston to reciprocate within it? I only ask because I don't know if there are differences between the dimensions of the pistons for the 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm models. With regards to the HG retainer, is that something that screws onto the underside of the receiver? Thanks for the information, Jet.
  14. I recently purchased a converted Saiga AK-47 variant from Classic Firearms because I didn't have the heart to alter my all-original IZ-132. I have attached a picture of the new rifle for reference purposes, as well as a screen shot of a set of Arsenal hand guards that I would like to install on the new rifle. Will these hand guards fit as they come, or will I need to make some modifications to them? If so, what kind of changes will be necessary. The hand guards in question are on Midway's website at: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2800157615/arsenal-inc-handguard-with-stainless-steel
  15. I bought one of those 14 years ago and had the synthetic sporter stock installed on it. I also put one of the Mojo sights on there. It is an absolute joy to take out to the range.
