  1. Looks nice.  I am doing a VEPR 7.62x39 now.  Just waiting on Dinzag for some of the parts.  Any chance on getting a close up picture of the stock and the DPH adapter?  I am working on getting the wood stock that they put on VEPR 12 to fit on my 7.62.  It is pretty close.  I had to file some off the DPH adapter to get it look flush with the receiver.  I have been working on re-contouring the stock because the bottom and sides hang past the receiver.  I tried using a Romanian laminate wood stock, but the sides and bottom of the stock were bellowing over the receiver.  I ended up contour sanding that stock too.  I don't know which one I will keep.  It has been a learning experience.  I believe this is a common issue with fitting AK stock on VEPR.  The pictures on Atlantic's website of the Russian Red VEPR in 7.62 show how much of a gap when IWD wood set is installed.

  2. I modified a AGP mag today.  The two spots that it rubs on the magwell are the two upper screw points on the magazine.  I sanded them pretty good.  I was trying to be cautious on sanding too much off and removing material until the screw shank was showing.  The bolt hold open is totally recessed into the magazine.  I don't see anyway it could be modified to work.  I think if you made a new bolt hold open lever with an extended arm, it could work in conjunction with raising the follower.  Lots of ifs.

  3. Did you have to slam to get the mag to lock initially?  My fixed stock VEPR12 had a mag release that was a lot tighter than my folder.  I assume you are using the mag that come with the gun.  When did you buy the gun?  Sounds like a huge QC issue.  Where did you purchase it from.  Not sure if you can get a replacement at this point with the sanctions.  I have had AK47 mags get that tight Yugo mags.  It sounds like the mag catch needs adjusted.

I removed my mag catch recently and filed it down to match my other VEPR12.  I was able to do without removing the mag well.  I did have a hell of a time getting the mag catch pin out though.

  4. I really didn't want to rain on anyone's parade, but all you have to do is replace the recoil spring with a heavier spring if you feel your shotgun has too much gas.

I worked on a Vepr today, that barely would cycle Federal Bulk Pack.  They are all a little different.

Just because the shotgun came with "X" springs, does not mean they are consistent with the type shot shells people put through them.

It doesn't matter if it is a delayed blow-back pistol (1911) or a shotgun, they all can benefit from installing the proper springs for the shells being fired through the system.

It is day and night difference when the system is properly tuned.  Less felt recoil and less perceived muzzle flip.

Just go out to the range, with an assortment of spring and start changing them bad boys.

You will find the combination that works for both your shooting style (mainly pistol) and the ammunition you are using.

Standard Government 1911 Springs may be utilized as replacements.  Stock springs are at an average of 16#.

Try an 18, go up a pound until the shotgun doesn't want to cycle properly and then start finding the perfect balance between performance and reliability or go down if your shotgun does not fully eject.

You want a very fast action.  The fastest possible without causing any physical damage!

I am a little confused by the stock recoil spring tensions listed in this post.  I know you can use 1911 springs for your Vepr or Saiga 12.  I also know the standard weight for a 1911 is 16 lbs.  Am I reading this correctly that the stock weight for a Saiga/Vepr 12 is also 16l bs?  I was under the impression that it was anywhere from 20-22 lbs for stock recoil springs for Saiga/Vepr 12.  It seems this has come up on tons of posts, but nothing concrete.

  5. I just tried removing the plastic mag well today.  What a PITA.  The pin is extremely tight in the mag catch and will not come out.  I have to got to Home Depot and get a new screw driver to grind for the nut and a new punch.  I destroyed my punch trying to get that damn thing out.

  6. Mine are the same as yours, the fixed is different from the side folder.  My side folder catch was a little long, so I filed it down to the same size as my fixed, now they both fit equally nice.

I assume you removed the mag release to file it.  Is that correct?  Did you have to remove the mag well too?

  7. I was curious what everyone's magazine releases look like on their VEPR 12s.  I have a side folder and a fixed stock and they are two different types.  The one pictured below was from the fixed stock.  The mag catch is shaped similar to an AK47 style with a U channel.

Here is the other mag catch from my side folder.  It looks similar to a Saiga 12.

The reason I ask is the side folder mag release seams to be smoother when I insert a mag.  The fixed stock mag latch seem to be a little longer and I need to remove material from the mag to get it to lock into place.  Not a huge deal, but I would like to the mag fitment to be the same in both guns.

  8. No, I had thought about just tig welding to eliminate the wiggle. I know it's angled to line up the sights, but it never really worked for me. I believe the stock in line with the bore is the best arrangement for reduced muzzle rise and quicker target acquisition. So I reworked it. I had hoped to take the cheek riser off and fix that too but I didn't feel like removing the detent rivet. It is only retained into the thin tubing. So I fixed it another way.

Man I am slow.  I was looking at your other post about removing the stock tube and just noticed in this post that you drilled a hole for the lower pin to punched through.  I was thinking you drilled the lower pin out, thus needing a new pin.  My bad.

  9. We'll DONT use brake clean! Lol the reciever didn't mind but the folding stock hinge washed off like dirty motor oil.

I just read your post and had to laugh.  I used brake cleaner on my bolt carrier and recoil rod this weekend, and the paint melted off.  I don't know what kind of cheap as paint they use in Russia.  Good thing I did not use it on the receiver.

  10. Has anyone tried the Polish Tantal mags in their converted VEPRs?  The reason I ask is because I filed my mag catch for circle 10 mags and the Tantals are extremely sloppy in one of my conversions.  The mag sits to low and the bolt will not strip the round.  I have another conversion that I did, and I filed the mag for the Tantals to work, but the Circle 10 rear lug will not engage the mag release because the rear lug is to thick.  It seems like the Polish steel mags have different dimensions on the rear lugs.  Also, the sides of the  Tantal mags do not fit snug in the mag well like the Circle 10 do.  Overall I am disappointed in the Tantal fit in both guns.  One gun it works but it is sloppy, the other it does not.  On the gun that it works, I had to shave the hell out of the rear lug on the Circle 10 mag to get it insert and lock.  Do most Circle 10 mags require filing on the rear lug to get the mag catch to lock.  I have only dealt with VEPR 5.45 conversions and not SAIGA, so I have no clue on what is the norm.  I also wondered if the selector lever plate needed adjustment.  I did not know if the mag was going far enough in the mag well.  I kind of find it hard to believe that both rifles would require selector lever plate to be adjusted.  I know a lot of Century builds need this adjusted, but I have not heard of this with SAIGA or VEPR.  I used a bullet guide from CSS if that makes a difference.  The only thing that irritates me with this gun is that I have to adjust the mags for each gun.  I am debating changing out the mag release on the first gun that will only take the Circle 10 mag.  I had to do this on my Yugo PAP.  Not fun, but fixed the botched up mag release that Century hacked.
