  1. Thanks, all... Frankly the hardest part I have had with stripping the Saiga is getting the dust cover back on...easiest part to take off, most time consuming to put back on...haven't figured out the "touch" for that yet.
  2. Gentlefolk, Just started playing with my converted Saiga, which I had to grab and run out the door with, trailing a gaggle of defeated zombie auto buyers in my wake...... Anyway, the latch on...the gas tube cover??? Is VERY tight...not sure the best way ro snap that upward ro remove the cover. Suggestions? BTW...LOVE that Saiga...what a neat, neat piece to have!
  3. I was formerly "in the media" ...the media is not the enemy. Generally reporters simply lack the knowledge to ask appropriate and revealing questions. We need to calmly educate the media so the balanced story gets out.
  4. Well, in the slim possibility that this is legit, and not just a way to collect a list of gun owners, here is my response: Dear President Obama, Thank you for the civility with which you are approaching this issue. If we accept the fact that guns are an integral part of this country, then why not de-mystify the gun? Why not have, as with driver's education, training available to ALL young people on the history of personal arms in America, and training on the appropriate use and care of weapons. The goal would be to take away the aura of the gun, and, as with driver's ed, provide a basi
  5. Hitler made the population register their guns, that's how they knew where to find them Yeah, but Hitler was legally elevated to power, by capitalizing on an abstract threat. We are not there yet. Oddly enough, in this case I prefer the excesses of liberals to the excesses of conservatives. It wasn't a liberal administration that has given us Guantanamo, Abu Grahib and waterboarding...oh, and Total Information Awareness....
  6. Well, as much as I would love a full-auto AR or Thompson, I have found I can live without one. Of interest will be to see if the FN 5.7 round will be affected...that puppy was DESIGNED to penetrate armor. A joy to shoot, wonderfully accurate, but hard to justify in any meaningful way, and yes, if it were not for the FN pricetag, I would have one in a second. I think we will have to absorb a hit now and wait 20 years for the reversal to take place.
  7. The actions of congress are only remotely and accidently aligned with either common sense or the will of the people. We are in a 24/7 election cycle and we are not happy unless we bounce from crisis to crisis and enemy to enemy. If the system worked with any rational process we would have never set foot in Iraq and Afghanistan. Long way of saying, we can slide by with a mag cap limit or FFL licensing for all semi -auto rifles. I am not taking bets either way.
  8. Well...Gore v. Bush was a bit faster than that...but you can slap a restraining order while litigation proceeds. Sadly, what we need is another, unrelated tragedy...a coal mine collapse, Three Mile Island, a Thresher accident or something to divert attention.
  9. Not as much of a fiat as it sounds....exec orders are still subject to legal action. A bad enough EO would get fast-tracked to SCOTUS.
  10. Guess you haven't looked in WTS for the last 30 secs....section has dried up. <ggg><sigh> At this point I will wait out the madness, maybe put a bug in my LGS that I wouldnt mind a Saiga in .223, but not holding my breath at this point. Such an offer! But I would be taking advantage...I couldn't possibly....
  11. Local shop, dealt with them for years, have always dealt fairly with me, no complaints.
  12. Have to look....$625 OTD or thereabouts. This seemed reasonable to me...is this what they are generally going for? The same shop had WASRs in the $525 range. Well...bang for buck they seem hard to beat...not that I have fired mine yet... How are the Saigas in .223? Reason I ask is that the Ruger Mini14 in .223 is rock solid, but the Mini30 in 7.62 is touchy. Are Saigas solid throughout the caliber range?
  13. Gentlefolk, Having just joined the lemming-rush to pick up things before they are banned, I went to my LGS to see how badly the madness had set in. All the ARs were gone...but at the quoted prices, that didn't affect me too much. I had been considering a Saiga for some time to keep my SKS and Ruger Mini30 company...the LGS guy did hand me a Saiga 7.62 and said "this is what you want to buy...it is what I am getting." My LGS guy knows my tastes...after scanning the rapidly-baring walls, I said "sold". Didnt hurt they were offering $75 off sticker. It is converted, synthetic stoc
