This is an interesting topic, and something I’ve also considered doing. I was planning to shorten mine so that it was maybe 18 1/4” INCLUDING the muzzle brake, then pinning that like you have to do with an AR to keep the 16” overall barrel length. I agree with those saying it’s not worth the trouble and cost to chop the barrel an inch, but if using a muzzle device permanently attached, you could lose 3-4”, depending on the device used.

Hopefully someone will chime in and help with some info on this because I definitely want to add a side folding stock to mine once I leave the People’s Republic of MA where such things aren’t legal. I do have a home in GA though, so it will happen sooner rather than later! oh, and I’d want it to be able to fire with a folded stock if possible so that would be good info as well.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

Does this work with the stock rear sight, or does that need to be replaced with another type/height to work with this?

I've had my S-12 dialed in for a long time now so that it's very reliable with all types of ammo, including cheap Wallyworld low-brass. I did a ton of internal mods including gas ports, fully profiled and polished bolt and carrier, JP stainless guide rod, Auto-plug, etc. etc. Well, recently I was placing an order to CSS anyway, so I decided to try out their performance puck just for the heck of it. I haven't had time for the range yet, but during the install, I noticed that the CSS version is quite a bit shorter than the stock puck. The stock measures .587", while the CSS version measures .527

Well, I certainly hope the CSS GK-01 is as good as everyone says because I ordered one a couple days ago while it was on sale. I have a Krebs flash hider which I have liked so far, but recoil has never been much of an issue for me, so this should be an improvement no matter what. I want to shorten the barrel anyway, so since I need to perm whatever I put on, I decided that the CSS one looked really cool and most say it handles recoil well so I felt it was a good all around choice. Not sure if I'll bother with chokes yet.

Pic or photoshop request of molot/CSS brake welded on for 18"
Terminator03 replied to gregdepot's topic in Saiga-12
Thank you. That is actually what I've been leaning towards for awhile now. I was originally going to do it with the Monster, but as you pointed out, the weight becomes a factor with a long steel brake like that. How much of an effect on the gas system does it have if you only cut it to make it 18" including the permed GK-01? My gun runs flawlessly on even the cheap wallyworld crap now, so hopefully it wouldn't alter it too much. I have fully polished and profiled bolt, polished rails and trigger parts, and of course port work. I'm also running an Autoplug. I don't mind doing more if necessary, -

Awesome! I NEED to do this soon! I love the shorter look, it is so much more balanced aesthetically. -

Thanks Malcolm. I was going to ask "how" you pinned it with the dissimilar metals, but that makes perfect sense. I was thinking that as an alternative you could have just hit the tops of those 8-32 buttonheads so that they couldn't be removed with a wrench, and that would likely be considered as "permanent" too - especially if you spot drilled the bushing so they could lock into it. Awesome job with the CF tubing! Where do you source something like that? I could think of several applications not even gun related to use something like that. Brian -

Gregdepot, I know aluminum is welded all the time, but you can't weld it to ferrous metal (steel) such as the barrel without getting really creative with bushings and things like others have done. Malcolm, that is gorgeous! Who makes that hand guard? -

Thanks for starting this thread because I've been thinking of doing the same thing for over a year now. Isn't the CSS brake aluminum? I can't remeber if it was that one or a different one, but how would you permanently attach it? -
Is the SAIGA 12 or 20 the PERFECT Home Defense Shotgun??
Terminator03 replied to Nala's topic in Saiga-12
Well, I don't have my s12 as my primary HD weapon, but do keep it ready to rock with a 5 round mag of 00, and the bolt locked back so it is ready to rock with a simple click to release the bolt. I have it worked now so that I trust it to be 100% reliable, but into its a bit too cumbersome to be able to maneuver well in most homes. For that reason I opt for a handgun, or even one of my carbines over the s12. I personally think that a Keltec KSG Would be a much better choice if you prefer a shotgun than anything previously mentioned including the s12. This is because the Keltec is an extremely c -
Well, its no more/less stupid that the other stuff we have to deal with here in MA, such as adjustable or folding stocks need to be pinned, bayonet lugs need to be cut off, etc. Its all just feelgood nonsense made up by idiots that no nothing about guns to begin with. I always laugh and tell people that my AR with 30 round mag isn't truly deadly until I slip a bayonet on the end of the barrel.
-
That looks similar to mine except I have the additional cheek rest which I highly recommend if you can get it. I'm not sure about that pin being for a sling. I was actually thinking about putting some type of sling on mine, but haven't had a chance to mess with it for awhile.

I run one made by Choate and it is super comfortable to shoot. I had to do it for the same reason since they only allow 1 "evil feature" where I live for semi auto shotguns and the detachable mag takes that. I really wanted to do it with the pistol grip, but now that its done, I'm not sure I'd switch it even if I legally could.

Thanks, that is a cool looking brake. I will have to give that a try at some point.

I actually had purchased one of the Tac47 manual versions prior to getting the autoplug. While the autoplug is neat to have, the manual type is fine for most people, especially if they shoot mainly one type of shell most of the time. One big misconception that people have is that changing to an autoplug, or even an aftermarket manual plug will somehow fix an undergassed gun. They should only be used once the gun is properly working with the stock plug inmo. I will probably be selling my Tac47 manual plug at some point now that my gun is dialed in with the autoplug. I didn't really "need" it, a

Yeah, but it is a copy of the Russian design and someone else is making them now. I can't remember which site (maybe CSS?) They actually had it cheaper than what Krebs was asking for them too.

Excellent summary, and very sound advice!

I agree with this. You really need to be careful with barrels. I have a machine shop at home and have been designing and machining my entire life, but wouldn't bother with a barrel when they are readily available. Beside the fact that they are hammer forged, they are also chrome lined. How is it you plan to do that?

Great communication and fast shipping! Would deal with again for sure.

That is very cool, and I actually had a dream about something similar last night. I saw some of those polychokes with the external threads to adapt a muzzle device onto. I wonder if you could perm the muzzle device to that and then cut the barrel and perm the polychoke to the barrel to get the 18" length? I don't really know how the polychokes operate, though, so maybe they need to be removable for cleaning? Even still, I would think that an adapter for standard Rem chokes (or similar) could be made to perm to the barrel, and be able to adapt a MD to the end. Does anything like that exist alre

Thanks for the info, but the link wouldn't work for some reason. Thanks also to everyone else who has posted so far! Great information in this thread so far!

Bringing this back up again because I have more questions regarding chokes. What do most of you guys that do run chokes recommend for a typical range/HD type of gun? I have never used a choke before, and I'm interested in potentially adding one, but have no idea which one would be best for my intended use. Some of the examples above really have my mind wandering about fabbing up a combination choke adapter with brake setup. I have a lathe and a Bridgeport, and can weld, so custom is no problem, but I'd like to start out with an existing choke adapter if possible since I've never used them befo

Do it! Looks like a sweet deal...lol!
