  1. Here is a pic of my 308. I added an RPK windage adjustable rear sight and I kept the front sling stud off as I haven't decided what to do regarding sling options. The closeup of the sight shows how much adjustment I had to make to compensate for a slightly canted front sight.
  2. KK, what scope are you using? BTW, the paint came out real good on this one. Glad to hear you got that straightened out.
  3. I'll try to post pics tonight or tomorrow when I get a chance. Nothing real fancy on my rig though.
  4. I went surfing on the Outer Banks on the tail end of Hurricane Hugo. I went out myself and crazy enough there was already one other guy out there. It took almost a half hour of constant paddling to get out past the breakers.
  5. It was in place (attached to the receiver) at the time. I wrapped some electrical tape at the end of a flat head screwdriver to keep it from scratching the receiver. I wedged the screwdriver between the safety and the receiver almost at the very end of the safety (starting point). I actually twisted the screwdriver from a flat-against-the-receiver position to edge-against-the-receiver to put pressure on the safety lever. I did it once and checked function each time. If I needed more leverage, I moved the screwdriver a little closer to the attachment before trying again. This process worked
  6. On my .308 and s-12 I've taken a tape-wrapped screwdriver and put pressure towards the outboard side of the weapon to decrease the pressure the safety places against the receiver. Technically it is "bent" but it should be to the amount that it relieves pressure and not something that you can notice by looking at it. You can also work the safety back and forth as seanie suggested but it will take longer.
  7. You're welcome tony. Seriously the only saiga I would balk at converting is the S-12 because in NJ the shotgun falls into it's own category of evil features. I left mine as-is and I won't even put the "thumbhole" stock that was previously on my .308. I don't want to be the test case that defines once and for all exactly what a thumbhole is in the Garbage...errr I mean Garden State. I know there's at least one other NJ resident in this forum that's done the S-12 conversion and I'll readily admit he's got bigger gonads than me for taking it out to a public range. The caveat of course is
  8. Not answering for Klassy but just want to inform you that in NJ, the fact that it is mag fed is already +1 on the evil features list. The type of mag doesn't matter as long as you don't exceed 15 rounds. Also, in regards to the OP, you have to have seriously screwed the pooch to have the PD search your vehicle while on the way to the range (or back). Even if they see your rifle cases in the back, it's a simple matter for them to pull up your firearms ID info while checking your license and registration. Hint: If they see rifle cases and you don't have a firearms ID, that's "screwed the poo
  9. Nice job on the finish though. Seriously looks good and I'm thinking about finding wood for my 308 after seeing yours.
  10. I like the wood. I'm not partial to the standard AK pistol grip though and like the beefier look of the saw grip. Did you make the stock and handguard yourself? I'd be interested to know how you did it.
  11. For deliberate shooting, try not breathing. At the end of an exhale, hold it, squeeze the trigger and follow through before breathing in again.
  12. huh? Eric that's a reference to the original mall ninja. Krisfox, I have no dog in the dragon skin fight and it seems that you have some issues with the manufacturer. That aside, Col. Hackworth's advocacy group (Soldiers For The Truth) also believed that the ballistic armor tests were skewed against Pinnacle and they published all the documents supporting their claims on their website. I don't know if you know who Hack was but I trusted him. And until the Army banned the use of Dragon Skin, it was used by Army generals and their PSD's, spec ops, and all the usual alphabet groups tha
  13. If you have the money look into the Dragon Skin armor sold by Pinnacle Armor.
  14. If you're looking for the .308 then save a little while longer until you can get it. Those rifles aren't going to come down much more in price. My opinion is that if there ever comes a time where you're going to need the .308's punch, you're really really going to need it! I don't see the battlefield ammo scrounging scenario as likely either but if there's ammo laying around, chances are the weapons that fire them are also going to be available as the previous owners probably have no further use for them. I'm also of the opinion that you train with the hardware that you're going to use.
  15. Are you using the sight mount? If not, have you thought about mounting a rail system there or would that be too far forward? You can get one of those rail systems that slide onto the mount and maybe just hack/trim/dremmel the piece off that goes above the dust cover.
  16. Welcome to the forum. I would advise that you shoot the saiga before converting it in the off chance you get a "vodka special". A business member here is contracted to do all their warranty work (CGW aka Cadiz Gun Works aka Van Killer).
  17. Concur 110%. If this is the gun that you've decided to use for HD, then train with it. The MTBF rate only gives you a probability of when the weapon might fail but you are still going to have to train on how you're going to react when it happens. Assume that all weapons will malf and be prepared for it. Incidentally, the only time my shotgun has jammed is when I forget to switch the gas tube settings and I'm shooting club ammo. I've had it a little over a year and I'm probably at the 1.5k mark on various ammo loads. It's jammed twice on me for the reasons stated. I haven't cleaned it sin
  18. Speaking for myself, I'm glad that you guys are now offering me a chance to buy from your store. I'm keeping an eye out for that .308 magwell.
  19. I just went through something similar with my basement. I found that the 1.6 gallon clear plastic containers that Home Depot is selling for $.99 kicks ass. They're large enough to accommodate most loose items, the clear plastic means you can eyeball some of the stuff in there (kick starting your memory as to what else you might have stored in there), stackable, and the best part..cheap. Thanks for posting!
  20. If you already have the .223 stick with it if expenses are a concern to you. If you can afford to feed both rifles, get the 5.45 and stock up on ammo now.
  21. You should shoot the .308 version and see how that compares to your Garand!
