I am trying to decide if it is profitable to reload for my AK and AR. I currently shoot steel cased wolf, but I have off and on wondered about reloading...
I'm not a big target shooter, I don't care about squeezing extra accuracy out of my ammo or trying to push the limits by loading the ammo hot. I really just want to save money. Is reloading really much cheaper than just buying steel cased ammo?
How many reloads do you get out of your brass from AK's and AR's?
How many rounds can you load an hour?
Do your handloads have better or worse failure rates than the cheap factory stuff?

Pistol grip, Trigger group, buttstock +1 more part for compliance (gas plug, piston, forearm, muzzle device)... that's pretty much the definition of conversion. Its the first step towards almost any configuration.

I hope for your sake that the red-dot can survive the abuse of the saiga.... If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on the saiga though...

OK they fit if I shove them in hard as shit it barely clicks in.
I don't want to modify a $650 gun for a $50 mag so I guess I will contact surefire to check if I can modify it.

I have a brand new S-12 from like a month ago, that I have never even shot. The factory mags fit real tight, but the surefire ones won't even load. At first they wouldn't even fit in the hole, but after I pushed hard and shaved off the back corners, they went in. Now I can't get the mag catch to grab the lip... it seems the plastic band at the top of the magazine is too high and hits the receiver before the mag catches.
Anybody else encounter this and any suggestions?

I have never taken a tactical course before because I would have to drive 6 hours to attend one, rent a hotel for at least one day, gas etc... so it would be like $1000 for a 1 day course...
These guys seem to price their courses under $200 and I could commute to it.
Do you think its worth it? or would my money be better spent saving up for a suarez class they teach in dallas?

I wouldn't want to cut it shorter than 18.5" and that's only 1/2" savings if you start with a 19". Not worth the trouble of losing the threads or rethreading. Just buy a 19" and be happy with it unless you want to get a SBS tax stamp.

I'm honestly pretty happy with my gun collection right now. I'd like to add a 1911, a .22 pistol and a remington 700. I'd also like to vastly increase my parts and ammo stash. However I don't think any of those things are at risk till his second term.
I mean don't get me wrong, in a perfect world I'd add every single one of those guns in my list above to my collection, but jeez I gotta draw the line somewhere. I don't have a gold mine in my back yard.

OK I had just about shrugged off the overwhelming results of this poll and got a .308 of some sort because I already have a converted s20 and didn't really feel I needed another assault shotgun.
Then I walked into the door of my favorite gunshop to ask about prices on a FAL's and saiga .308's and I wasn't 3 feet in the door when he said "I have 2 Saiga 12's, $629 if you want one." I glanced around the shop saw the barren shelves and said yes sight unseen. The damn thing wasn't even unpacked yet... lol, fedex had just bought it in 2 minutes before. He sold the other one (as well as the 1 saiga .308 he got in the shipment) before I was even out the door. I'm glad I have my CHL cause the background check line must be slammed these days.
So now I gotta convert the bastard, maybe I'll sell my s-20, I don't know. It really seems absurd to have 2 assault shotguns.

Dude, you need more guns. Make sure you have at least two of any model that may be useful in case of SHTF. I would also suggest a CZ-75 SP01 with 18+1 of 9mm goodness. Also make sure you have a few cases of the right calibers squirreled away, especially Russian spam cans for your ComBlock stuff.
I know I need more guns, but I have only been shooting for like 3 years. 3 Guns a year is pretty close to what my budget (AKA wife) can afford. I have about 1000 rounds for each of my calibers stocked up, but again I can't go on an ammo spending spree if I want to get another gun. Honestly I don't think ammo is going to be banned / supertaxed before a new AWB. I could be wrong, but its a gamble I'm willing to take.
Assuming a new AWB goes through before June or so, I am stuck with my 1 gun purchase limit. Besides another 2-3 long guns is all that will fit in my crappy little safe (again purchase restricted by my wife).

Maybe somebody else can help you with that question, I did my own conversion. Several of the business members on this website specialize in conversions, you might ask one of them.
Honestly, its worth it to do the conversion yourself to learn the details of how your gun operates. The only really hard part was removing the trigger plate, but that just takes patience. It involves drilling out 4 rivets, 1 tack weld, making 1 hacksaw cut that you really can't screw up and cutting one hole for the pistol grip nut. Its literally a 2-6 hour project with a hand drill and a dremel. Safe functioning isnt that much of an issue because all the holes for the forward trigger group are already there, so you can't screw up and accidentally under-engage the hammer unless you start polishing and cutting your trigger parts (which is not required for the conversion).

The trigger is 100% better with it moved forward. The transfer bar they added to remove the pistol grip just makes it squishy with lots of travel. AK's aren't known for their great triggers, but if you move it forward and polish the hammer you can actually make a pretty decent trigger.
Also I much prefer the pistol grip as it makes the gun easier to control during rapid fire, makes it appear distinctive and makes it easier to hold during magazine changes. It also gives you more options in aftermarket buttstocks. The factory furniture on Saiga's is pretty horrendous IMHO.
I know I was scared to do the conversions for a long time, but once I did them I don't regret it for a second. Maybe if you want to hunt with your saiga there is a benefit to keeping it in factory config (less crazy looks from stuck-up over/under shooters), but thats not me....

I will probably only be able to afford 1 more gun in the next year ($1000 absolute max w/ magazines and any conversion parts) what should it be? Here is what I have:

I know there are crap tons of these lists out there, but please help me out. So many guns to buy, so little time and money.

You'd be hard pressed to find one on this board that's not.
One that I saw for sale says that "the trigger configuration was moved forward by a professional gunsmith." Is that trustworthy? Is it a big deal to do that operation?It depends on who did the work, but a friend and I did ours with a hand drill and a dremel, so if everything functions fine, its probably ok. Take the cover off, remove the spring and bolt and look on the inside of the receiver, make sure everything looks clean and not mangled. If they didnt fuck up the removal of the factory parts, I doubt they could really mess anything else up in the process. Make sure the conversion has less than 10 foreign parts so that it is 922® compliant.
Is it possible to buy one from the factory with the pistol grip?No, that would make it a non-importable non-sporting firearm, because nobody would use a pistol grip shotgun for anything sporting.

Ouch man, I hope you find a solution. Gunfixr seems to know much more than I do, but I'd still be weary of shooting a gun with a bulged barrel.

As long as your gun does not have a choke system (which I don't think it does) it won't damage your gun.
I have noticed if your barrel gets excessively dirty (say you put 500 rounds of cheapo bird shot through it in one sitting) and then you shoot slugs it will scratch the chrome... but this isn't serious damage imho, you'd get worse scratches from shooting steel / tungsten shot.

I'm a new Saiga-20 owner. I was wondering what slugs you guys recommend for shooting from a Saiga-20. My gun came with an unmarked choke from the facotry. Any help is appreciated.
Are you sure its a choke and not just a barrel nut? I was unaware of factory choke systems.
My gun came w/o a choke and I fire Remington Slugger 2-3/4" 5/8 oz rifled slugs. Mainly because this is the only brand of 20ga slugs carried at Academy. They seem to work fine, but I've probably only cycled ~20 of them ever due to price (and the fact I have no good justification for shooting slugs).

The good ones that measure adjustable rentgen rates have a nearly impossible to find 400V battery.
Use a modern lithium-ion battery pack at ~24V and a 400V DC-DC converter. I'm not sure about cost, but I know you could get better lifetime out of a newer battery technology. Even a new lead acid with a step up converter will outperform those old batteries.
Anyway if you really want to buy a new one, I know that the ones made by ludlum instruments (http://www.ludlums.com/) work well.
Also as somebody else mentioned, alpha radiation is pretty much only dangerous if you ingest the source. Beta is also relatively benign as it won't penetrate a car very effectively. Gamma rays are the scary shit, they fry you and are a bitch to stop.
I can't argue with the usefulness of a geiger counter / survey meter though. If you are hiding in a fallout shelter, it would be helpful to have some idea of the levels outside when deciding if you should stay holed up another week even though you are out of food. Also when fleeing a contaminated area it would be helpful to know you aren't just driving into the fallout of a different area.
Unless you are certain you can escape the fallout area or absolutely can't find a basement to hide in you are better holing up in a deep basement for at least a month to let the worst shit dissipate. Potassium Iodide (KI) pills are also a lifesaver, if you don't have access you can spread tincture of iodine on your skin. This iodine saturates your thyroid gland so it will not absorb I-131, a major component of nuclear fallout.
