One thing for sure, I don't think the average man can read a patent and really know what's covered or not, anymore. There are whole legal departments that argue over what is is, and gigantic court cases that ultimately determine how they apply.
I'm supposed to be on one patent myself, but after I gave the corporate lawyers diagrams and descriptions, I dropped off of the process and have NO CLUE of all the behind the scene stuff that followed.
