  1. Damned kids and their OEM rifle cases... back in my day, we had brown cardboard boxes that our AKs came in. If you wanted to have a plastic case, you had to whittle one from a bunch of melted milk jugs and paint it yourself! I like it
  2. Have a rather odd question. I need to rethread my cleaning rod since I had to grind it down... it won't fit the cleaning kit I got with my Saiga anyways. What size of die should I use to match the original cleaning rod that comes with the Saiga? They're what, the 20 inch ones? Any of you guys know this one? Thanks in advance.
  3. Well, I'm gonna try this sans drill press. I've got the countersinks started, I guess, so they're not walking anywhere. Just a matter of getting it right where it needs to be...
  4. Exactly where should I drill? I mean, obviously, you have to at least hit the barrel, but I don't want to hit the barrel so high that it goes through the barrel wall and into the rifling.
  5. Got an urgent question for you guys. The reason it is urgent? I have a range date with a young lady tomorrow at 1:00 PM. So, less than 24 hours. It's spring break, so, time is limited. I slid a new 74-style front sight block on my Saiga 7.62x39. I also installed a muzzle brake on it. The FSB itself is on pretty tight, and is not easy to move. However, knowing how the AK-74 type brakes work, I wouldn't want the thing getting pushed off from the gases vented through the brake towards the front of brake. So basically, I need to drill and pin the FSB onto the barrel, just like the
  6. If you're a real stickler for authentic Russian parts, give the Kobra sight a look. About $200 if you know where to find them.
  7. I haven't noticed much of a difference as I switched between the two on my SGL31. That's why the flash hider is on it now. Hm... interesting. I wonder what the difference on full-auto would be.
  8. While I was browsing around the internets, I noticed that there was another option available for the muzzle of 1x24 equipped weapons... this flash hider: Were any AKs ever equipped with these in the field? All of the pictures I found were of more modern AKs with 74 brakes on them. Of course, if you're trying to make the rifle more controlable, you would want to put a brake on it, not a flash hider. I think I've seen these on rifles before; I just don't remember where. It's hell being a stickler for detail
  9. Mine's 24x1.5mm, I think. 7.62x39mm.
  10. Is this... sight block... with left handed thread compatible with this muzzle break? Right handed thread
  11. I'm looking for the final part of my rifle conversion... a '74 style muzzle brake threaded in 24. I hear some are less authentic than others, and the result of that being that some barely reduce recoil and muzzle climb while the genuine designs almost eliminate the two. What do you guys recommend?
  12. The thing won't fit completely over the muzzle... there's a "step" inside the FSB that narrows down the diameter leading into the expansion chamber. Is this a signal I should just mount it there?
  13. After much swearing, grinding, and slamming the old FSB into the wall (this was obviously a procedure which demanded the cutting edge of manufacturing technology... so I used it)... It came off. Metal finally cracked from fatigue and a relentless pounding. Now on to the next task... affixing the new FSB. What do you guys do here? I noticed my FSB didn't want to slide completely down over the muzzle... is it acceptable to run some steel wool on the inside of the new FSB to open up the diameter a bit? Also, what did you all do to get the sight drum out of the old FSB?
  14. I'm not seeing any dimples... that's what has me confused. No evidence whatsoever that the thing was pressed on. I'll look again to make sure...
