Dammit! FIOS recorded the wrong episode. Not that it wasn't a bad episode, but it wasn't this one. Trying it again...repeates aren't such a bad thing
-
I don't own one but have been considering the 6.8mm. Given that, I do have friends that I consider to be "in the know" (folks who lived or died by their choice of armament) who love thier mini-14's. Did they do mods, or have them done, absolutely, but they still love them.
Finally, my advise is to stay the hell away from ProMag magazines. Might as well just throw your $$$ straight in the trash can...the mags you buy will end up there after hours of frustration anyway. I guess the question is whether you want your mags to work some of the time, or all of the time...I've personally seen this this with ProMag clips on more than one occasion, and not just for the Mini's. YMMV!
Edit - Ruger did do a revision to the mini somewhere around 2003 or so that addressed many of the accuracy issues. I don't have all the specs, but it was pretty much a complete rework that addressed many of the issues mentioned here. That said, most of the folks I know that have them, own much earlier models (albeit modified) and they still perform on par with the typical AR.

hey VKA, do you duracoat? if you do, what kinda $$ and turn around time are we looking at?
If not Vultite, get with me at the shoot. There are other folks in our area who do a great job with this kind of work...usually with next day turn-around.

Well, we had the KelTec guys out here today and things went great, but I think our little event will go even better...partly because I invited them and their folks to drop by for our little event.
And things are improving. Thanks to Tom (Sweep) from the Florida Shooters Network I met today, we now have a couple of hundred rounds of 12-Guage to "dispose of," and I'm working on getting more of the same, including brass in other calibers. Hey, ammo ain't cheap these days, so anything to help defray the costs of a shoot like this is a big deal IMO. Anything I can get will be on hand for us to shoot up, so that in itself will be a big bonus for the day.
In other news, the cars should be coming in the week of the shoot (so other folks don't destroy them all before our shoot), and we're working on fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, etc, plus we're working on a moving target system. Lot's of cool stuff, some confirmed, some in the works....stay tuned!

because when all else fails buy them both
That's the best way to go...as long as you won't go by the wrong side of the "War Dept".

I'll be at the Florida Saiga Shootout in march. you can see my work there.
Hello Viking Kitty Armory,
Glad to have you on board for the March shoot & I, for one, am looking forward to seeing you there. I'm on the Tromix wait list & will send them one to do, but there's other Saigas that still need some TLC during that gap
-
The Rem 700P isn't a bad starting point either. The HS Precision stocks they come with are pretty much good to go from the factory, and once the trigger is adjusted and action blueprinted you've got one hell of a shooter.
And I'll give a +1 on Predator Arms. Great guys who know there stuff, but there are some other folks out there as well who do tack drivers on a "budget." If you go the Remington route, give Randy at R&D Precision a look, but give him a call before you purchase anything. Randy pics and chooses the jobs he does these days, but if he takes your job, you'll save a decent wad of cash going through him.

A few updates:
The best deal going for those wanting to bring a tent or a camper is at the range itself. They have water & power hookups, and charge $8.00 per night. If you have questions or want to reserve a spot (there should be more than enough to go around), give the range a call Thurs-Sun at (941)322-0055.
There are a few other camping areas in the vicinity, but I got a bunch of crap from most of these folks about it being season and them not knowing if they would have room or not. If you guys want to check into those, they're listed in order of those closest to the range:
Lake Manatee State Park
http://www.floridastateparks.org/lakemanatee/
Duette Park
http://www.co.manatee.fl.us/internet/parks...rks_duette_park
Frog Creek Campground
Myakka State Park
http://www.floridastateparks.org/myakkariver/default.cfm
No dice on the hotels discounts, except one located in downtown Bradenton that I'm still waiting for an approval on the discounted rate. It will probably go through, but this is a nice hotel and rooms are going to be in the $100/night range with the discount. With that in mind, feel free to hit the travel sites and see what's available in the local area. However, as I said earlier, look for motels at the US301, SR70, & University Parkway exits of I-75, and steer clear of the motels at the SR64 exit. Given the current condition of those motels, you'll be more than happy to drive a few extra minutes.
Other good news
- We're currently arranging to have some cool stuff to shoot up brought into the range...cars, appliances, & the like.
- There will be plenty of tannerite for sale. The club owner is mixing up more just for us.
- The range guys will be cooking hotdogs & hamburgers for us the day of the shoot. They typically charge $5 for a full lunch at events like this.
- And a few other things I'm not going to mention just yet. I want to wait until we get a sign-up list going to see how many will be showing up that day so I know just how much we can do.
I'm looking forward to meeting up with all of you that day, and I'll post more info as it becomes available

clarification: I want to blind some one so bad, that I dont have to shoot them...???
Nothing short of a laser is going to do permanent damange, but the Surefire's will temporarily blind someone. Trust me, mine are relatively low power compared to some and they will still have you seeing spots even in the daytime.

Stand easy everyone. I know I've been off taking care of other things the last few weeks, but this shoot is definitely a go. January was has been a maelstrom workwise for me, but I haven't forgotten about the info needed here.
I'm still working the angles with the folks here locally in the free time I have & am hopeful to have something concrete up before the end of next week. Feel free to do your own research in the meantime. In any event, I will do what I can, but it's snowbird season here right now and a lot of these folks haven't been real willing to cut prices. That said, I have a few on the edge of giving a special rate, so keep your fingers crossed.
The only thing I will say is to avoid any of the motels at SR64 and I-75. Those have gone downhill in a big way. You can go an exit North or South of SR64 and you'll be OK, but everything at the SR64 exit was a true disappointment.
And yes, I will have campground info as well.

There are several good ones out there, and I have used Pelican, Streamlight, SpyTorch, Surefire, and several others for search and rescue work. Of those, when it comes to durability, size, and brightness, I generally lean towards Surefire...and I personally own several and my E2E fits easily in my shirt pocket and is brighter than the rechargable streamlights most the officers I work with carry. Extremely bright, lots of options, tough as nails, and all in a small package.
I'll let an LEO weigh in if you can get away with the regular Surefire lights on a tac rifle. It's something I plan to try, but I haven't got around to it yet. I wouldn't think there would be too much to worry about with something like a .223 tac rifle, but I know Surefire will tell you to go with the weapon lights due to the stress from firing.
Beyond that, I've seen a few guys mount the cheaper lights (~$20 Sam's Club specials) on a shotgun/rifle, only to have lenses, bulbs, and batteries end up 15-20 feet in front of their gun after firing.
I'll pack up a small collection for the March get together and let you get some hands on with a few of these in different configs.

The problem with this poll is that the 2nd doesn't GIVE us the right to bear arms like the poll says. We already HAVE the right. It merely enumerates it as a pre-existing RIGHT the govt. CAN'T remove.
Perfectly stated! I just wish more citizens understood that concept.

I'm tentative right now for the the upcoming Feb Shot Show... Who all from this board already has confirmed plans?
Just curious about your experiences from prior shows, as I've never attended one before. I've heard that some of the vendors will sell off their non-firearm products near the end of the last day of the show. Any truth to this? Anyone know which vendors might do this?
Just firmed up my flight plans the other day
And yes, you can grab some stuff while you're there. Some have small stuff to sell during the show, others will sell the display items at the end, and some won't let go of anything. A lot depends if they're heading to another show afterwards and how much they want to cart home. Just ask them, they'll let you what and when they will be willing to part with.

Yeah, I just checked and it is the LE132-00, not the LE127-00. I bought them in an all-white Federal case of 50 rounds, and it didn't say reduced-recoil anywhere, so I just assumed they were normal 00 buck. These are rated at 1145, and the birdshot ones that were cycling pretty much flawlessly even at the #1 gas setting were only rated at 1200. Is there that much of a difference? Or is muzzle velocity not the most accurate indicator of gas pressure?
I think the reason they don't is that there are a good number of semi-autos out there they do work in...I know of several guys who use what you have in Benelli's without problem. Some vendors will mark it as low recoil ammo, but you're right, a disclaimer on the box would be nice. Beyond that, IIRC, the Tactical Precision 000, the really slow stuff, is marked "for pump actions only." All in all though, the Federal Tactical line will produce some impressive patterns out of a smooth bore shotgun.
Give Mike's suggestions a try and see if that takes care of the issue, and defiantly do some testing with the factory mag. That will help eliminate some of the unknowns and root out the real problem. And if you want to try some of the full power loads, these guys have it at a reasonable price:

I do not think the local offices even keep up with that stuff and won't care.
You could well be right! Care to find out and report back to the group? Be sure and carry your camera man!
Priorities change all the time!
These guys march to the beat of somebody else's drum, just like most of us do while we're at work. Should things change in the not so distant future, it's not out of the realm of possibilities for us to see BATFE officials conducting inspections at our local ranges. And yeah, if something like that happens, I think they'll know what does and doesn't pass muster...and if in doubt, I'll bet they confiscate and hold until your weapon until proven otherwise.
-
Check to see just which 00 Tactical load you were firing. There are three different varieties of Federal Tactical 00 buckshot, and only the full power, 9-pellet shell (LE127-00) was designed for use in autoloaders. The other two are considered reduced recoil loads and are intended for use in pump shotguns...though they will work in some autos.
Here's a link to the specs:

Spend some time and read both of these documents as they apply to the discussion here:
GCA 1968 - Before you drill down to 922® and 925(d)(3), be sure to read 922(a)(1) at the very top

CFR 27 478.39

Seen this around the web for sale. Supposed 10" groups at 1000 yards.
Anyone shoot his from a Saiga 308 with 22" barrell.
Accuracy and at what yardage?
I'm looking at 200-350 yards.
Performance wise, it's on par with Federal Gold Medal Match ammo...both use the Sierra MatchKing HP bullet. The Federal has a bit more energy than the M118LR, and I find that it performs a slight bit better in my Rem 700. Beyond that, the Federal is a cheaper on the wallet to shoot.
I haven't shot a .308 Saiga, yet, but you should see 1/2 MOA accuracy with either in a good rifle. Personally, I'd grab a box of each and see which works best in your rifle.
Edit - We plan to shoot both of these type of ammo out of a Saiga .308 in our March shootout. I'll be happy to report the results after the shoot.

Here we go again! everyone pile on .
Bro! When you go into certain neighborhoods and start yelling certain things out, you're gonna get the crap beat out of you, or worse. You've gotta think about where you are, and think about what you are going to say before you say it. A POINT-FIRE-AIM mentality is just going to keep the shitstorm flowing in your direction.
And if someone has pissed you off, that's OK, but give the person a chance to set the record strait before you unload on them.
-
OK, Cite case law.
Until then it's just opinion.
There's nothing wrong with your interpretation of 922r. The problem is that when enough folks ask for direction from the govt, they eventually get it...and it's usually not the answer they were looking for. Furthermore, if a particular industry can successfully regulate itself, the govt usually stays off to the side. That's why folks here get so ticked off at the non-compliant guns put up on gunbroker and other sites.
Case in point, look at the SCUBA industry. It's totally self-regulated with it's own rules, certifications, standards, etc that 99% of the people adhere to. Just like with firearms, there is an inherent risk with the sport, but these folks took the initiative to address the issues so the govt never had to...and they never did.
Food for thought.

wadda we gotta do if we wanna bring our own guns?
Get ahold of a TSA lock if you're going to be flying down with them...I'm sure these aren't 100% secure, but it's better than the TSA folks breaking the lock to inspect the contents.
This is one of many (see bottom item):

I wouldn't mind seein' Mrs.J and racegal on the beach after a day of shootin'!

If Bob @ Bear Arms put a banner ad up here for a month at 70 bucks stating he has a few for sale and had a clickthrough to his site, Im sure he would be amazed at the traffic he would get in the first day or two of exposure here....
I don't really expect for the 6 he has left to last the night but he knows about the forum, I told him I would pass the info along, don't know if it was a one time fluke or if he gets a regular slice of the pie but you might pass that info along to him and he might just do that .
Sorry guys, I grabbed the last one
I don't think Bob has any reason to doubt the effectiveness of advertising Saigas in this forum. He told me his phone hasn't stop ringing since the post went up. If anything, it'll probably be more of an issue of whether he can get stock in or not.
This was my first dealing with him, but I've seen his shop recommended on other sites. And as personable with me as he was, I can see why.
gmorgan - Thanks for posting the info. Great find!

It looks cool, but hardly worth the price since it only holds two more rounds than the high capacity models...not to mention the added bulk.
