  1. I like the setup you have there Jim. It's always a toss-up between quick access and safe storage, and that's one of the better ideas I've seen for a reasonable balance between the two...especially with young kids in the house.

I don't have little ones running around (yet), but I still didn't like the idea of leaving a loaded firearm anywhere the wrong person might find it. What I ended up coming up with was screwing padded bicycle hooks above the door inside our master bedroom closet. The shotgun stays up and out of plain view, and is easy enough to get ahold of if I need it. Even still, when we get to the point we have kids and they are reaching the curious stage, I think I would look towards something more like what you have.

    Great idea...thanks for sharing!

  2. Whats anyones take on the K.O. slugs,I just bought some from Dicks sporting goods $2.69 a box, do they preform any better than a normal slug, has someone shot a ham or maybe some phone books soaked in water as a test?

I cycled a couple of boxes through three of my shotguns a few weeks ago, and the results weren't bad at all. They were consistent across the different guns (although I didn't have a Saiga at the time), and accuracy was good at 25yds...no problems drilling 3" clay birds one after another. And it's hard to beat the price on them.

That said, if I was going to step up to a better performing slug for distances past 50yds, I would look towards the Federal Tactical Tru Ball slugs instead of the higher end Brennekes. They're about half the cost and perform just as well.

Edit - I didn't do any impact testing with the KO's, but like other slugs, it's the last thing I would want to be hit with ;)

  3. Keep in mind that these yahoos are executive officers and are pandering to the politicians. They do not represent the views of the majority of the rank and file and there will again be hell to pay for their stunt.

Amen! This isn't stuff you'll hear from the vast majority of LEOs. Well-armed, law-abiding citizens just aren't a hindrance to doing their jobs.

Mike - Tough question, but this isn't a new position for the IACP. As to who supports it within the organization, consider that nearly every police chief or sheriff is a member of the organization and very few are likely to give more than a canned answer regarding the International's official position. And I really doubt you'll find much more than a list of IAPC officers in print anywhere.

What I would suggest is to inquire with the various local agencies regarding the likelihood of obtaining an individual Class 3 permit for a BATFE-regulated item not prohibited in your area (SBR, SBS, suppressor, pre-86 machine gun, AOW, or DD). It's up to the discretion of the Chief Law Enforcement Officer whether they sign the forms or not (even when all evidence indicates your use and ownership would be completely legal), so the agency's response to your inquiry would probably be a good litmus test of their policy regarding the legal ownership of "non-sporting" firearms by citizens.

  4. Seems like all the dealers above are out of stock on the 12s. Anybody know where to get a 12 right now?

They are scarce right now, if even available, but you might check with Atlantic Firearms...they still had some not too far back. Nearly anything you find right now will be full retail, so I'd approach any "deals" with a bit of caution.

Also, I spoke with a dealer at last weekend's gun show who said RAA's next shipment of S-12's was roughly a month out. I don't know the guy, so I can't say how accurate that info is.

My advice (which I'm currently abiding by) is to be patient & keep a sharp eye...you'll save yourself some jack to go towards the mods you want to do.

  5. Thursday nights at the WAC is Action Shotgun...6:30pm... usually a move and shoot course with metal poppers and swingers. Hernando Sportsmans Club runs a pistol/shotgun action shoot on the second saturday of the month, usually 4 or 5 stages. Come on out and give it a try...most run benelli's but that will soon change :killer:

Now those are worth a trip! I can't think of a better way to work out the kinks of any modifications you make, and I have a few customized weapons I need to do just that with. I'll probably drag a couple of "sickos" I know along with me, but I'll give you a heads up when we get an outing together. I'd love to get a peek at what you did with your Saiga.

  6. If we keep letting them raise our kids to be this "politically correct" we will all suffer for it in the end. Everyone's so damned worried about offending foreigners or minorities it's becoming more and more offensive to the majority....or what should be the majority...

<kicks soap box in direction of Sampson county! :killer: >

Amen...that's the real issue! Our schools should not only be educating our children, but also helping to shape them into the next generation of leaders. What a lot of these schools are producing these days is scary stuff & we're going to be in a world of hurt if we don't start changing how these folks think.

  7. flg8r - I don't get up that way all that often, but I have been to some very nice ranges in that area. What do they run on Thursday eves...trap, skeet, 5-stand, sporting clays?

vjor - If you shoot at Manatee, I'm sure we've bumped shoulders at one point or another. Great range, great folks, so the 45-min drive doesn't bother me a bit. And I will be shooting the 1000yd range soon...just waiting on my Rem 700 which should be ready in Nov. If you see a some guys with a lot of guns taking up two or more tables each (usually with at least one Kel-tec PLR or SU-16 in the mix), drop by and say hi, it's probably us ;)

Roger that on AK-USA. I've got the site bookmarked...always nice to have a good gunsmith within driving distance.

  8. Just adding my personal experiences with OnPoint Firearms.

Evan & Marie live just a short drive from me and I've purchased a fair number of guns from them over the last few years. They have always been great folks to deal with, plus their operation is set up to keep overhead to a minimum which makes them very competitive on pricing.

This doesn't take anything away from the others listed, I just haven't purchased from them.

  9. Hey gunhack,

Actually, this will be my first bit of experience with the AK design, but I do own a Baikal O/U that I shoot a lot of clay events with. Not a showpiece by any means, but you have to admire how Russian companies know how to build a functional weapon around a simple design, that, like you said, is built like a tank. I have no doubt I will be just as impressed with the Saiga-12.

The Saiga project looks like it will be more involved than anything else I have done to date, but for me, a weapon isn't right until its modified and customized it to fit you. I may end up tapping into some of the skills of others for some things, but for the most part, the Saiga design seems simple enough I can accomplish most of what I need to do. In any event, it looks to be a fun and rewarding project.

And I agree on the temperment of the forum. It's a comfortable atmosphere with people looking to help where they can...much like the folks at the local range I shoot at.

BTW, I love the kalashnikitty ;)

  10. I've been lurking in the shadows soaking up what bits of knowledge I could from you guys & figured it was about time I said hello to everyone.

I'm still getting my feet wet in Saiga territory, but after seeing a Saiga-12 in person at the Police & Fire games last June, I knew I had to add one of these to my collection. The LEO who had it was all too happy to show it off & talk about all the modifications he had made to it, and I can tell you the only thing I didn't like was handing it back to him. Of course, now that I'm at the point to make a purchase, the stock of Saiga-12s have gone bone dry, but that's OK. I'll just keep reading & learning, pick up an accessory or two, and with a bit of luck I'll be ready to start making it "my Saiga" when it arrives.

Beyond that, I wanted to say thanks to all the folks who have made this place what it is. The information here is incredible, and while it would still be possible to go this project alone, it would be much, much more difficult without all the ideas & experience here to draw from.
