  2. CTx2 Just walk away from the RIO shells the small amount you save per box is nothing compared to their low quality and variable performance. I've used a wide variety of shells and the Barnaul, Seller & Bellot, Remington and Winchester work just fine. Try a couple of different brands and measure the over all length of the unfired shells. Federal 3" Handgun loads measure 2.88". Remington 3" Express loads measure 2.63".

    Mag questions

xp, I saw this same thing a few years ago and it has been a topic here at the forum once or twice since then. Go here http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/32231-silver-bear-2-34-slugs/page__p__287883__fromsearch__1#entry287883%A0%A0 and look at the photos. This is the condition I was seeing. Read on down to the bottom and you will see my solution. There are also other posts about magazine refinements and adjustments if you look around.
  4. I've had less than remarkable results with Rio. Misfires, split cases, primers unseated. Seems dirty too. Some Rottweil 2 1/2" slugs were just awful. But you get what you pay for. I've had good results with Rem, Win, Sellier & Bellot, Barnaul Silver Bear (not Golden Bear) and a few others I can't think of right now. Try a few and see what you like.

    Gone Green

It is easily chipped. More on the receiver than anywhere else. The magazines, Tapco stock and the fore piece hold it real well, the barrel and muzzle brake not bad. But, I'm not trying to put a shine on this. And if it gets chipped enough for me to care, there's always more paint.

    Gone Green

Tim, HAR! Gun, I've been experimenting with several colors and patterns. This is the simplest. I think the next one will be a spatter of tan, brown, green and black. I haven't gotten the mix right yet, still practicing on small pieces of wood. Getting one color to fade into the next on the curved surfaces is the trick.

    Bogus Link

The previous topic regarding 410 shell sizes is a bogus link that you can't back out of and that is not gun related.

    Crows vs. S410

termite, Go here http://www.hallowellco.com/shot_size_chart.htm for a shot size chart. There's a bunch of places on the web to buy shot so i won't bother with that. Most of these are available as lead, plated, steel, bismuth, etc. If only we could get some depleted uranium, probably nice patterns and great range.

    Crows vs. S410

termite, No laughing here. I'm aware of what the loads are capable of. Way back I posted some test results of shot patterns with and without the choke so I know what the densities are. Around the same time I had a thing going on with the local squirrels (current cease fire) and for a while went to a 16 ga for the tops of the pine trees after seeing a grey run out from a perfect halo cut into the foliage. Since you are reloading, have you ever considered using BB, BBB, T or F? These run from .177 to .22 and though the shot count would be lower I think they could make a good varmint load.

    Crows vs. S410

What size shot did you use and how many rounds did it take at that distance? Did you have the choke installed?
  12. They'll probably work just fine. They are 3" after they have been fired. Go back through the forum, there are several very thorough entries about shell sizes and what works where. Illustrations too.
  13. "They hand cycle fine but I have not shot one yet. There is a little bit of up and down movement in front of the mag where it locks into the mag well. It is pretty tight on the magazine catch on mine and I will probably have to file just a little off the mag to let the catch work properly. I will probably cannibalize one of my other saigas for the parts so I can convert it tonight and shoot it tomorrow." I've got six magazines from three different manufacturers. They all needed some refitting to work properly so the description of movement and filing sounds normal. They all worked in the
  14. QB, Take a look of the top view of the two empty magazines so that the followers are visible. The magazine bodies are the same size and the followers are the same length, but the 2 1/2" follower has a stop near the end to keep the shells in the correct location. Your photos look like your 3" magazine may have a 2 1/2" follower in it. If it does it will have to be replaced. You can't just file off the stop because the angle of the two followers is different.
  15. coon hunter, slugs are OK with the barrel protector, avoid the chokes.
