  1. A huge +1 for Dinzag's .308 FCG! It makes the conversion very easy, safe, and reliable. I just slightly modified the factory trigger guard and re-used it. If the PG nut hole is already cut, the Saiga .308 is very easy to convert/restore.
  2. Yeah, I just got an Arsenal SLR-106UR. It's great! I will be sending mine off to Rifledynamics to get it made into an SBR as soon as the Form 1 goes through.
  3. I understand people being leery of the Promag drums. Some of their earlier products have been of poor quality. However, that is not true of the Promag compact drums. If you were to inspect one in person, you would see that they are clearly well made. There is no flex at all in the drum body, it is very strong. The back cover is not at all flimsy. The locking tabs for the back cover are fairly substantial. You could break one off if you tried hard enough, but they are not especially fragile. The feed lips are metal, as with the factory and AGP mags. The front lug is metal reinforced.
  4. Chile, Force on force is going to be your best choice if you want it realistic. Paintball is fun, but is not overly realistic in the real world. Find a place that offers force on force training (Frontsight, Gunsite, etc) using simunition rounds. They are fired out of modified (real) guns and hurt like hell when you get hit. It will definately make you pay attention to what you are doing and is a good measure of how you would react in a real life situation. Some of the schools are expensive, but they are definately worth the effort. One of the officers that I work with is big into sky
  5. I have to say, there is nothing wrong with your original design. I have one of the plugs you made, and it works great! It is high quality, and it does exactly what you say it will. Thanks for a great product!
  6. I have always gotten excellent service from DPH Arms. Perhaps they are trying to get the mounting problem fixed properly; and that, plus taking care of other orders, is keeping them very busy.
  7. All I know is that, in my experience, the Gunfixr gas plug that I got directly from Nate definitely does improve performance with low-brass ammunition. The increased impulse to the gas puck may be slight, but with my S-12 it has made the gun go from not quite cycling low-brass ammo reliably, to cycling all but the very lightest loads very reliably. This result was realized with very few rounds through the gun, so break in was not a factor. That, plus the finger adjustment, makes it a great product in my book. Again, this is just my experience, but it is not my imagination.
  8. Buy a quality hardened steel target rated for centerfire rifles. Shoot at a range at which the velocity at impact is less that 3000 fps (not really an issue with the 7.62X39) and bullet splatter/ricochets are not of great concern. Personally, I wouldn't get closer than 50 yards with a 7.62X39 unless I was using frangible ammo. There are several companies that manufacture fine steel targets. I get mine from metalspinningtargets. They have a gravity-reset popper target that might suit your purposes well.
  9. It's not so much a collusion per say, as "erring on the side of caution". First off, it's not how it used to be. People aren't brought straight to the state hospital any longer. Only chronic cases ever make it there. How something like that would go down is a series of events. Not just one. First, the Police feel for whatever reason that a person is a danger to themselves or others. They will tell the person "We' just want you to get evaluated... Will you go voluntarily?" They may even tell them that if they go there "voluntarily" they can leave if they don't want to stay (which is almost t
  10. I agree with evildog and Indy. There is very likely more to the story. There are few people in law enforcement able to authorize that kind of response (SWAT, evacuating an area, etc.) who are so stupid/ignorant that they would do so unless the individual in question had made statements clearly indicating that they pose a fairly imminent danger to themselves or others. I also agree that this kind of justification for taking someone into custody needs to be scrutinized VERY closely, as there is the potential for serious abuse. It is true that once you are officially labeled as somehow mental
  11. It can be a little tricky to get the bolt carrier back in after field stripping. I usually have to push down on the hammer a little while pushing down and forward on the bolt carrier. There should be no need to hammer on it though. As for the trigger reset issue, the standard thing to check on is whether the mainspring legs are properly in place. Also, I recommend doing a full safety check on the gun. The Saiga .308s can have some special safety issues after conversion (see the stickied thread toward the top of the .308 section). I strongly recommend the .308-specific FCG from Dinzag.
  12. +1 on Dinzag's .308 fire control group! In my opinion, it is just about mandatory on a DIY Saiga .308 conversion.
  13. That is awesome Sal! You have a real treasure there. Oh, and if anyone wants a sling like the one pictured, PM me. I have one that I don't need. By the way, if anyone can afford a gun with a stock like that, get it. They lock open with ZERO wobble, and they fold great too.
  14. With the AK, windage is adjusted by moving the front sight right or left as needed. As long as you can move the sight enough to hit where you are aiming, it's fine. +1 on the AK sight adjustment tool. They are inexpensive, and well worth getting.
  15. I guess a lot depends upon what you will use the set up for. If personal defense is part of it, get the best you can afford. The Aimpoint Micros are great, but as was mentioned, very expensive.
  16. Perhaps the main issue with sight offset is that it should be taken into account if you are shooting at really close range. For example, if the sight plane is 3" above the bore, you will be hitting around 3" low at a really close range. You could simply compensate by aiming about 3" high. This is mainly relevant for head shots.
  17. Good point in a civil suit. It wouldn't make any difference in a criminal trial. At least not in Texas. The question there is simply "were you justified in doing what you did." What you did it with wouldn't matter much unless it was illegal for you to have.
  18. I have a Magnum Judge with a 3' barrel and at 7 yards I get 7"-10" groups with 000 and 00 buck. Like I said, I wouldn't want to shoot much beyond 5 yards with one, but that's just me. Anyway, the Judge is probably a pretty good option for HD. I'm not knocking the gun at all, I like them.
  19. Yeah, I asked Bvamp about the possibility of Saigas in 22lr being imported, and he said that other than the biathlon types he didn't know of any such plans. It's too bad, I think they could sell a boatload of them. We would finally have access to a really good AK trainer. The WASR-22 is OK, but I bet the Saiga would be better.
  20. Yeah, something like Gun Scrubber is bad news for the painted finish. I only use the "synthetic safe" version to clean and degrease internal parts, and that only very rarely and carefully.
  21. That's about what my Saiga .308 does too. Good results!
  22. Buckshot is an excellent choice for home defense, but not so much because you will be more likely to score a hit. At the close ranges we are talking about, buckshot patterns are very tight. An exception would be buckshot fired from something like a Taurus Judge. I used to have one of those, and shot spread so quickly that I wouldn't have wanted to shoot beyond about 5 yards with it.
  23. Out of the, admittedly very limited, choices given by the OP, I would probably go with the .223. I am not saying that is ideal, but not many options were given. Perhaps the bottom line is that there is considerable risk associated with discharging ANY firearm in a residential area. There is probably even more risk in failing to deal with one or more crooks who have broken into your house. It is your choice. If you are not willing to accept the risk accompanying a course of action, then don't engage in it. Speaking only for myself, I will shoot if I need to, trying my best to hit only
  24. I have done lots of business with K-var, and never had any problem at all. I am sorry you had a bad experience.
