  1. Took her out again today and decided to measure my brass (steel actually...Tula) cases before and after firing to see if there is significant expansion. Well, being a tapered round I really couldn't measure the width, so I measured case length only. To my surprise, it all came back shorter after being fired. What gives with that? Is it because the case is getting fatter?
  2. HB, not really sure what could have caused it. Perhaps the bolt was initially a little too tight and it formed that step after cycling a few rounds. I cant really say. It is already pretty smooth, so i dont want to try and match up the rest of the bolt lug with it. I'm just going to get me a set of gauges and check her periodically after range trips. I greatly appreciate all your advice and that of the other members.
  3. The scratch just lines up with the locking lug portion of the reciever. There is absolutely zero wear on the reciever. It must be signifinantly better/harder steel than the bolt to continue to appear like it was made today! I was watching a mel64d video on extra bolts and he did say that the bolts are not so hard that they can't be scratched with hand files. As a matter of fact, thats how he fits spare bolts on his rifles, so I'm not really sure what is to be gained by running a file on my current bolt.
  4. Beef Jerky time!!! Hope everyone had a safe one. Someone needs to turn up the heat because its too darn cold for this part of the country!
  5. Cool test. I'll see if i can replicate it. In light of our discussion, I decided to see if any of my AKM bolts would hand fit on the C39, and to my surprise both my MPAP 92 bolts would fit and rotate. Howeve, both fit a little too tight and the bolt would not unlock when moving the carrier back. I had to rotate the bolt from the tail to get it to unlock. The geometry appears the same with the exception of some extra cuts on the yugo stem. I found info on other sites where folks are using Polish 1960 bolts and carriers as drop in replacements, but alas that well has now run dry.
  6. HB, which gouge? Are you talking about the second pic? I had also noticed that bit of a "step" so I compared the bolt to my other AKM's and noticed the same step in those bolts (yugo, chinese, bulgarian). Don't currently have headspace guages, but looking to get some.
  7. Dude, this is my 16th AK, but the only milled one I was willing to pay for. If the bolt craps out, I'll replace it. If the rifle craps out, I'll sell it. I've got plenty to shoot. Nothing wrong with having a cheap AK to wear out and replace as opposed to my Russian ones that I currently cannot. But thanks for your concern.
  8. Already knew about the ras. But the C39v2 is a different rifle. I'm not going to worry about it. I've got reference pics to look at to eval wear. If it starts going south, I'll either repair or sell as scrap.
  9. Seen it. That's why I was concerned and posted pics of the bolt. Seems these rifles are either good or bad. There are vids of some passing 5000 rounds with no visible wear. Others crap out early.
  10. The more I look at this rifle, the better I feel over this purchase. I'm sorry I didnt include pics of the reciever, but really it's in like new condition. The locking areas practically look virgin.
  11. Finally shot it. Very soft recoil. I'd dare say softer than my saiga 5.45. I think it's the weight. Took pics of the bolt and carrier while cleaning it a while ago. For being a pawn shop find, I'd say this rifle is in excellent shape.
  12. Yes. The bore is nitrided. Its really a very nice rifle, but heavy. Hope to finally shoot it tomorrow since I'm getting out of work early. But then again, I have worked late all this week, so maybe I won't. Fingers crossed.
  13. Unlined? Maybe? Its a nitided 4150 steel barrel. I guess thats the same as unlined. I would have preferred chrome lined to be honest.
  14. Got it for $500 at the pawn shop. Will post pics later today. Everything looks good and the bolt is showing almost no wear. Also, the chevron brake was missing but I had spare tapco ak74 type that screwed on and looks really nice. I've been reading horror stories over at some of the other AK sites about headspacing issues and what some believe is soft metal problems. I cant help but think they may be looking at it all wrong.
  15. No risk of wonder mutt chomping on anyone. He's a big baby.
  16. They thought I was spotting for the traffickers and faking my dog walk. The same dog walk I do everyday with a giant very conspicuous dog.
  17. Funny story. Yesterday I was stopped by police for walking my dog. They thought I was scouting for illegal alien trafficking. I thought it was funny because if I was trying to blend in, I'm sure the giant white German Shepherd didn't help. My border patrol friends couldn't stop laughing. I will say the cop was polite, but not a single comment on my dog which behaved better than I expected.
  18. Back with it's sisters. The last one is a Bulgarian cousin.
  19. There is one other SGL21 floating around these parts that I transferred for a doctor back when they were running $700. I've told that doc many times thaet I've got $700 ready when he decides to sell. Keeping my fingers crossed he doesn't check current pricing if he ever calls me up.
  20. Wal-Mart lawn and garden section has really cheap and effective hearing and eye protection. Not fancy, just effective.
  21. And in only a few months later.....shes coming back to me. My friend needs the money for some crazy ass project. Called me and asked if I wanted it back. By pure coincidence, the timing is perfect with my annual bonus. So the SGL is headed back to be with it's other friends!
  22. They should add "are you antifa or have you ever called for the violent overthrow of the democratically elected government?" To the 4473. Also, are you a democrat?
