    Factory Handguard Mods

In my quest to shave as much weight as possible off of my Saiga .223 I have come to the conclusion that the factory handguard is lightest inclusive system at the moment. That doesn't change the fact that they have a look that only a mother could love... So having a few laying around I went ahead and hacked and stippled one to see if I could make it any better. I think the results turned out pretty decent. One thing I did that I have not seen anyone attempt is to stipple some parts for a better purchase. despite being a bit cliche' this particular application seems to work well. What are your thoughts? Anybody else have any good modifications for the factory handguard??? PS: I'm right at 7 pounds with the current setup, and the magpul rail section weighs almost an ounce. The VG probably weights a little more.

    Saiganov Questions

Hello everyone! Just got my first Saiga about a week ago and this is my first post here and it's going to be a long one I'm afraid. A couple of things to note that may be relevant later, the rifle is in 7.62x39 and I have the misfortune of living in central New York. I'm a big fan of wood furniture and a big fan of the svds, psls and all. What I'm aiming to do is build a shorty saiganov of sorts. Now, that may be an overstatement. What I really want to do is get some wood psl handguards fitted and figure something else out for the buttock. As I mentioned I live in N.Y. and kommander kuomo says I'm not allowed to have things he finds scary on my firearm. So a conversion isn't exactly on the table right now. I don't want to have to hide this thing in the closet until we get our rights back. I'm looking at a psl handguard set from Ironwood Designs and I feel like I can make that work. The question is what combination of retainers gas tubes and handguard mods is going to fit together and get me lookin spiffy? After I sort that out, I'll go on to figure out what to do about the butt. Thoughts? Thanks for hanging in there if you got through all this!
  3. Recently purchased a 7.62x39 Saiga, reconfigured it to it's original configuration. Put on a hogue pistol grip and a Tapco G2 trigger. Buddy of mine gave me a wood stock and a handguard but he did not have the gas tube cover. I recently got some nice wood for my Norinco SKS but it's got the cheese grater gas tube cover so therefore cannot put the wood cover on it (I personally like the cheese grater anyway. Tried installing the feed ramp but accidentally broke the tap inside the hole, so I'll be welding it in place insteading of bolting it. So I was hoping someone might be willing to sell/trade me a wood gas tube cover for an AK.

  5. Hi people. There are many things that I am ignorant about.fine woodwork is nearly one of them. So I have Bulgarian Surplus AK 74 wood that I bought from MarkW1. I bought two sets. One was refinished and is beautiful, I just need to make a matching wood pistol grip and clone his finish. The other one is the what I want your help with for now. This is going on a gun with a magwell and a very non-standard grip. I intend it to be suitable for 3-gun or similar, whether or not I ever get the chance to take it to an event. Since the style of traditional wood doesn't really match the modern features on my gun, I wanted to deliberately go non-traditional with my colors to emphasize this. I had thought of going with a light green stain or color matching the blonde buttstock to the hazel colored fore-end, and staining the grooves and contours in green. Now I think I am inclined to go with my first plan and Stain both Grey/ Charcoal, and make the grain pop as much as possible. I want the parts to match as much as possible, and am ok if dings get highlighted. This will be a gun to use, so I will apply a durrable finish and aim more for matte than gloss. I am open to all of your suggestions. I cleaned all the shellac off with denatured alcohol and sanded first with 100 grit and then 400 on both. I may need to get some intermediate paper and remove some crossgrain scratches that showed up on the forend, then redo the fine paper. I will do steel wool too if that is advisable, but I was just working with what I had onhand. The process I expect to do unless you guys recommend something better is as follows: 1) touch up the sanding a little better, moisten them with a rag of warm water, and sand a little more. Then 0000 steel wool. 2) get some dye at least black or grey, and brown if needed to get the stock to match the forend. I read here http://milsurpshoote...ay#.TxvWDW9rN2A that dye is better than stain and more controlable. a) do a light coat on the stock only and let it soak in of brown if needed.Repeat until underlying tone is comparable to the other piece. use black or grey stain to get an over all Charcoal tone on both pieces. I want the grain to stand out if feasable. Do this in multiple stages so as not to over do it or get mismatches since the wood is different. 3) after the above seems good and dry, Use a paint brush to apply a durable urethane finish. Aparently the thing to do is several coats before it cures fully and steel wool near the end. Here are pictures for reference: Stock Before: I am told that beech was a common wood for Bulgaria. This appears to be beech. Fore-End Before: I do not know what kind of wood this is, but it reminds me of mahogany but harder and darker. Both together after sanding: Close ups of grain (The beech looks really good, and I wish they matched): More pictures in reply: Continued even further:
  6. Stock set is sold This four piece stock set is a take-off from my Arsenal SGL-21. The components are US made, Warsaw Pact length buttstock and will fit stamped AK47/74 variants. The hand guard has a heat shield. Comes with cleaning kit that fits in buttstock. Pistol grip comes with screw and t-nut. The stock set is used and shows some abrasion that I've tried to capture in the pics. For the most part it's in great shape and the abrasion is only on the buttstock. This rifle was babied so I'm not even sure if it's abrasion or just some funkiness in the plastic. K-Var sells this set new for $107 + $8 for the pistol grip screw + shipping I'm selling this set used for (sold) shipped with delivery confirmation in the Continental US via USPS.
  7. Going to buy some ironwood design furniture for my saga build I know I need some hardware. So far I've come up with sling swivel, butt plate, spring for cleaning kitt, metal thing for upper handguard(whats the name for it?) Metal thing for lower handguard(whats the name for it?) Am I missing anything? Wheres the best cheapest place for these parts?
