Galil Orlite mags?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking around the site, but have not found any information specifically about Galil Orlite magazines used with the Saiga 223. I'm thinking about modding the gun to accept unmodified magazines, and I'm wondering how well these would fit.

To get the orlite Gallils in the mag well you need to dremmel down the rib furthest forward on each side. They then snap right in. If you wanted to use the mag as is you'd need to relieve the receiver to let the rib clear. To increase reliability in feeding it's a good idea to legthen the mag relaese too -- the mag will sit higher in the back. Put in a feed ramp and you should be good to go. :killer:

I have to wonder about the Galil Orlite magazines...the Orlite mags made for use in the AR15 type weapons is of poor material. They are unreinforced, brittle and are prone to crack & chip. The AR15 guys avoid them.

I really can't imagine why converted E.G bakelite AK-74 mags wouln't be a much better route to go.

I use such in my Norinco 84S (.223 chambered AK). I like them better than factory mags...they function 100%.

Jusrt curious about the galil orlites, are they made from the same plastic as the AR Orlites? And are they fairly durable compared with the Bulgy AK-74 mags

ETA -Heheh, I see we were thinking a like Lolly. But you are still not getting my Bud lite. :D

AR-15 Orlites are reinforced with a wire mesh, but they are not a durable as the Bulgys with a steel lip buried in the molding. I have a had great luck with the AR Orlites.

Yeah! That was spooky. No bud, huh? :D

I just know the AR Orlites have a rep as being prone to break, and, a bit over priced for what they are.

However, i must admit that the ones I have seen at the shows for sale were pretty worn to begin with.

Well as you probably know back in the ban days they were cheaper, and plentiful compared to USGIs and worked better than a lot of aftemarket mags. When the ban ended they were as expensive as the USGI Milspec ones.

CDNN has/had them fairly cheap, and I bought a batch off of gunbroker a while back, 3 for $15 shipped. One had cracked down the back of the rib, normally it would have been a throw away but I was using them for 22lr mag inserts so I glued it and it has worked fine. Some of them, I have read will crack at the feed lips, but I have never had one do that yet with slapping them in on a closed bolt, and what the heck, for the price they are, they are disposable. They have always fed great in my stuff, the only thing is they fit tight in some rifles.

So if you modify the Galil orlite mag exactly like Bulgarian waffle mags with a feed ramp installed on the gun, will they work? I keep getting conflicting opinions.

Can't really garantee 100% function -- it depends on you getting all the angles right. I modded 4 of 'em and didn't touch the gun at all. I've only tested one of 'em and it was 100% for about 50 rounds. First off I dremmeled the reinforment ribs that keep the mag from going into the magwell, and then matched the shape of the front of the factory mag using JB weld (original version not fast setting) reinforced with a small machine screw shank -- think rebar in concrete (If you use a feed ramp this is not needed). Finally, since I'd heard complaints of bolt overiding the cartridge, out came the JB again to glue a small shim under the rear mag catch on the mag -- to tighten, and raise the rear of the mag. On test firing the JB chipped slightly at the impact point of the rounds, but the reinforcement should keep it from breaking. I did the same thing to EG bakelites for a Chinese 223 MAK 90 -- they've held up for many years and are still going strong.

So If you put the feed ramp in the gun, get the angles right, you should be GTG. I'd recommend the shim at the back of the mag too. :killer:

Go with the 50 rounders on CDNN, add a bullet guide and be done with it. My 3 50 rounders feed with no problems. The plastic mag I have has reinforcement inside the plastic, but it has jamed at times. Never a jam with the steel mags, even with emptying one as fast as I could into the front yard.

Thanks for the replies. I did try modding one EG 5.45 mag, but never got it to function perfectly. I may revisit the concept though. 5.45 mags have always been cheaper and more plentiful anyway.

I use converted E.G 5.45 mags in my Norinco 84S (.223) AK with really good results.

OK what exactly do I need to do to get the EG mags to work in my 84S?

Dremel the stops inside the magazine to allow the follower to rise no more than 1/4"...

You can give it a little more "up angle" at the front to enhance feed.

On the metal follower, bend the front to be straight -rather than angle down. You can do the same with a plastic follower via melting it with care.

If it will not latch in the weapon, lightly take down some of the bakelite material on top of the lips till it does.

That's it. I use 8 of these in my 84S -they have been 100% reliable.
