Bore guide & cleaning rod recommendation?

Recommended Posts

HI Everyone:

I finally got a custom .308 bolt rifle built. It has a trued/blueprinted Rem 700 action and a Shilen heavy barrel with a 1:12 twist. I figure I better get proper cleaning gear for it before I do sight-in firing.

I basically told my gunsmith to give it a "match" chamber since I'll mostly be firing Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. ammo in it. I don't know what he did, but my bolt is VERY smooth.

Anyway ... I don't want to accidentally mess up anything when I clean my rifle. For example: I'll only use nylon brushes.

My question is what is considered a high-quality bore guide and cleaning rod for a custom rifle? I assume Tipton for the cleaning rod, but I really want to make sure my bore guide protects my chamber and centers the cleaning rod.

My rifle is basically an M-40A3 on steroids due to its heavier and longer 26" barrel, and MacMillan A4 stock. Rem 700 SA receiver (blueprinted/trued), Timney 510 wide blade trigger set at 2.5 lbs., Badger .250" recoil lug, bottom metal by someone in Oregon (Pacific Tool and something - forgot full name), AICS 5-round mags, Badger 30 MOA rail, Harris bipod, SWFA fixed 16X mil scope (for simplicity). Things have been bedded and pillared too. Muzzle has what's called a Schraeder crown.

I had many questions about this project that I submitted here on this website. I wholeheartedly thank everyone for your past encouragement and guidance about this project. I'll show its grouping as soon as I get a chance to go to the range. However, I have already achieved my primary goal: having a really cool rifle! It's already received approving nods from members of local law enforcement.

Thank you!  :-)
