Saiga 223 Vs mini-14

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone here that can make a side by side comparison of a S-223 vs a mini -14 (or excuse me, Ranch Rifle) in terms of utility, reliability and accuracy? I am in the market for 223 auto and not all that interested in an AR but wondered if a Saiga would be a better buy that a Ranch Rifle. Does anyone has experience with both that can compare and contrast the two?

Both are very reliable. I owned a Mini 30 and have shooting friends who own and have owned Mini 14's. Neither of the Ruger models seem to have any decent accuracy beyond 50 yards and those of us who have gotten rid of the Mini's couldn't have been happier. The Saigas perform better in the accuracy department than the Mini's but can not match accuracy of a good AR or bolt rifle. The AR's dependability is OK if kept very clean while the Saiga doesn't need much in the maintenance area, it just keeps on shooting.

Judging from what I've read in numerous gun-rag articles and postings on gun boards, I would not waste my money on a Mini-14.

I like Ruger products in general, owning quite a few myself, but I would recommend getting the Saiga .223 and doing the pg conversion, install a bullet guide and get some mags to trim. This is all easy to do with a dremel and a few standard hand tools. You will be way ahead on money and will have a much more accurate rifle.

My Reply: Fuck Bill Ruger and the whore he rode in on. That POS will never get another cent of my money. I only regret that I didn't buy AMT copies instead of the Ruger 10/22 and Mark II that I own. That man and his company do not support your right to keep and bear arms and doesn't deserve your money.

It all depends on what you want the rifle to do, and the look you portray when you take the thing out of the trunk. If sporting and wood, and never needing relyablity out of high cap mags the ruger is a good rifle(just due to the expense and rariety of high cap factory mags and the way the barrel is connected to the stock giving a accuracy problem). The saiga is going to cost less, and there are high cap mags out there and the conversion can be done to allow their use and still stay with the sporting look. If bad ass ak("AK-47, When you absolutely, positively gotsta kill every muthafucka in the room, accept no substitute.", from Jackie Brown) look you need then you pick the saiga and do the conversion. I have a high quality chote folder for my mini and still have the saiga 223 stock. Not to say I wont do the conversion some day, I have plenty of ak rifles in assult rifle form already so I may just do a high cap conversion.

I must side with DaGroaner on this one as Bill Ruger had a lot more to do with the "Hi-cap" gun ban than most people realize. He saw what was coming and looked out for his own self-interests instead of the future of shooting sports and indirectly assisted in the engineering of the magazine and "Assault" rifle ban. Smith and Wesson jumped in bed with the anti-gun lobby and bankruptcy was their ultimate reward. To Hell with both Ruger and Smith & Wesson.

I think the goverment put pressure on them and leaned on them really hard so they really had no choice in backing the goverment. I don't buy anything american made now since they didn't back us their end product user and supporter why should i buy from them now. Winchester went first and Colt is on shakey ground too i hope they all go under they deserve it. My chinese and russian guns rock.....

you can get 2 saigas for the price of a mini. Accuracy is far better in saiga. way more bbl lenghts. way more oohaah effect , too. plus you can get som many diff type mags and convert them into hicaps for your saiga, it is rediculous, and they are cheaper than ruger mags.

the reason , the government was even able to put pressure on the gunmakers, is BECAUSE THE ALLREADY HAD RUGER! mr. crapruger, went up on the hill and testified publicly how good an idea it was, and urged/forced other gunmakers to go along. then this all got put into the media echo chamber, and off to the races it was, to see which gunmaker could next be so cool, and be with the 'in ' crowd , and be talked about nicely by the fifth column media, and get the right interviews, invited to the right parties, etc. thinking all this good publicity would help their companies, and of course once the antigunners and the media saw they weren't really such bad people, why they of course would stop their bad stories about them , right? And stick up for them and be on their side during stupid lawsuits, right?

I wouldn't have another Mini-14. I had one and couldn't sell it fast enough.

As the barrel heats up, the POA changes radically.

That and Bill's influence on the HiCap Ban is all I needed to say no to the Mini-14.

Hey - your Saiga 7.62 will kick the ass of any Mini 30 out there. The mini 30 will throw 6" groups on a good day and even 8" is considered normal (100 yards). They have a long throat with .308" bores - allows you to shoot either .311" com block ammo or handloads with .308" bullets or some such BS.

I am completely down with O.S.O.K.,hunert percent correct. I have a 16 in bbl one , and when i go to the range, it completely destroys any mini out there, and also most all other ak variants. when i tell them how much i paid for it, they look at their rifles with utter disdain and revulsion.

just read another article n the mini, starting in 2005, it is made to be max capable of 2 moa at 100 yds. if you would find any new mini that shot better than this, you would have an exceptional one.

This kind of accuracy would be an big engineering feat for Ruger as they could not get acceptable accuracy (and dependability) out of the XGI (.308 Mini-14) and eventually gave up on that project.
