hoop762 0
Ive been told several times that a lot of the old school shotguns, over 40 or 50 years old, you cant shoot steel shot out of them cuase it will damage the barrel, and that to shoot steel you need to get the barrel replaced. I was wondering if this was true, and if so, why. Steel or lead, if the shot stays in the cup while in the barrel, what does it matter... whats the deal?? thanks guys
IndyArms 10,186
Steel bb's although in the cup WILL NOT DEFORM as they go through the forcing cone section of the barrel, or the choked section of the barrel. Lead is soft and will deform and "mush together" yielding bb's that take on almost a cubic shape from the force of them all mashing together. Thats what they would look like were you to shoot them into water to retrieve them... The steel is too hard to deform, so the diameter of the shot cup will change VERY LITTLE as it moves through the barrel. with newer barrels they are strong enough to take these forces. The older barrels were never designed to deal with those stresses and could split/rupture/deform. I hope that makes sense, as it is the quick, simplistic version... and sets ya straight...
