Compliant part question

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm on the verge of buying a .223 20" Saiga. Once I do, I plan on conversion. My question is this:

I'd like to use a Russian handguard and buttstock. Of course I'll use US parts (FCG, Pistol Grip, and whatever else is involved in the conversion). I'd like this rifle to be compliant/legal (I'm a civilian using a police range  )

Would using a US piston do the trick, or anything else? Can I use other US parts on the rifle without changing mag components? I plan on using Orlite mags.

I think you need 5 US 'compliance' parts without a threaded muzzle, and 6 US 'compliance' parts with a threaded muzzle (some one please correct me if I'm wrong). If you're using a foreign HG & butt stock, the obvious 'compliance' parts to consider are FCG (3), PG (1), and gas piston (1). Personally, I like going with US-made mag parts so much (it fits with my philosophy of not putting 'after-market' parts in critical places) that I make my own US-made 'compliance' Orlite floorplates:

I've never swapped a Saiga gas piston, so someone else here will have to provide input. If you thread the muzzle, you will definitely want to plan on a US-made muzzle device.

Obviously, your mileage may vary, I am not a lawyer or professional gunsmith, etc., etc.
