tigerclaw,I thought i'd share this story with you about armed citizens deterring crime.

Over the last several years drugs have become a serious problem where I live, but all of the assaults taking place are in a small area of the inner city, where the majority of the poorest residents live. Most of these people couldn't afford a firearm or can't legally own one due to a criminal record.

Enter my brother-in-law.He was dating a girl in said neighborhood, and was confronted late one night by a would-be mugger whom he quickly deterred by brandishing his carry pistol. The guy ran up to him from behind, but Phil, being paranoid like me,half expected trouble and had already drawn his gun when he heard the guy's footsteps. When he realized the guy intended to hit him,he fired two shots into the dirt, which sent the asshole packing. The cops showed up and took Phil to the police station, and after he explained what had happened was sent home (sans pistol). The police caught the mugger the next day,who was wanted for various other crimes, and returned Phil's pistol to him a few weeks later. It's a crime to discharge a firearm within the city limits, but due to the fact that the gun was fired in self-defense,no charges were filed against Phil.

I do agree in principle, that simply owning a firearm doesn't guarantee your safety. But,if you are willing to use it to defend yourself it greatly increases the odds in your favor!.

Uhh. I hate to say this, but I am NOT the one who wrote this article. I just translated it. I agree with the fact that only an idiot will think that having a pistol in his pocket guarantees his safety. I lived long enough in rough areas of Chicago to know different. I seen policemen taken down, stabbed, beaten and their guns taken away. I personally know a guy, here in USA, who in Florida, while having a consealed weapon on him, was jumped by a bunch of Cuban "refugies", and had his skull crushed with a lead pipe. If a pro thugs come after you, your CCW gun WON'T help. I guarantee you that if I am coming after you, you will NOT see me coming. I will have people distracting you. I will put up an act that I am a retarded homless man. I will pretend to be totally drunk. You will NOT have a chance to use your weapon if a group of pros. Come after you. You, folks, forgive me for saying, have no idea just how tough, ruthless and fast the "homboys" can be. You have no idea about the tactics they use. I do. Why? I seen it done many times. Both in Uptown Chicago and in Russia. I seen a guy,an armed security guard, knifed in the back of the neck by a guy whom he never saw, because three other guys were distracting him. Your CCW will NOT help against the pros. It may help if someone else is attacked and you pull out the gun. True. However, in a home defense situation, it is complitely different manner. Even a double barrel shot gun is good enough deterrent when pointed at someones' chest. Do not think that a gun in your pocket will help. Not unless the criminals know that you are armed. Even then, if you are good enough target, the attack will be planned carefully and executed. You guys do not know how bad it can get. Neither can I. I have not lived in a ghetto. I lived in a pretty bad, predominantly black neighbourhood, I seen how exactly it is done. Trust me. If you are attached you will NOT even see your attacker. You pull a gun too early and the thugs will run to the police...

You make it sound like a guarantee. I know quite few older folks who've gone their whole lives without lead pipe to cranium interaction of any kind. But hey, that ccw pistol isn't complete useless, when traveling through a rough neighborhood you can hold it to your own head and if anyone gets within 10 yard just yell "I've got a hostage! Back the @#$% off!".

I wonder to people ever READ what I post. What I said is "against pros" you are very unlikely to even pull it out. Why? Because they will put an act for you. "Help me, Mistah... Help me... The guys over there... Trying to kill me... Call the police..> For Christ's sake...." If you pay attention to the guy... His buddies will bushwhack you. If you try to protect him, he will bushwack you. You just keep thinking that a pistol in your pocket makes you a Chuck Norris, Rambo, Bruce Willis, Terminator and Charls Bronson all in one. Do I think that CCW can help? Definitely. Do I think that CCW makes you 100% safe. NO!!! Do I think that using a pistol in self defence guarantees that someone won't play a victim a race card or something else and YOU won't be the one sent up the creek? NO. I personally know a guy. He has a website about Tanfoglio Witness gunsmithing. Well, he pulled a gun, a LEGAL gun on a group of local scumbags who threatened him. Since he was by himself and there was 6 of them. It was his word against theirs. They played both, a victim, and a race card. The guy is still in jail.

I think that CCW is a very complex issue. You pull it out too early - you are the attacker and may be a killer. You pull it out too late - and you won't pull it out. You need to pull it out and use it at JUST RIGHT TIME.

Considering that your attackers choose the place and time of confrontation, the situation will be difficult, and you will have to decide at a blink of an eye: WHERE is the threat. IF there is a threat. IS the deadly force warranted?

You have less then a second to do that. Make a single mistake and you are in trouble. It is easy to be an armchair Terminator. It is NOT easy to act RIGHT in a time of crisis.

I DO agree that having CCW enables you to save OTHER people from danger. Example: You see a carjacking and you pull out your carry weapon and engage.

The guns are incredibly effective in deterring home invasion and protecting the property. However, I doubt that CCW will be very effective in an immediate SD situation. The guy who will be grabbing you by the arms, doesn't have to stop you. He has to delay you for 1 second. Just until you get whacked on the skull with baseball bat. And trust me, I seen plenty of people with this injury.

Why Doesn't The Media Visit Kennesaw?

By Chuck Baldwin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kennesaw, GA's

Mandatory Gun Law

A Proven Success

11-6-99

The New American magazine reminds us that March 25th marked the 16th anniversary of Kennesaw, Georgia's ordinance requiring heads of households (with certain exceptions) to keep at least one firearm in their homes.

The city's population grew from around 5,000 in 1980 to 13,000 by 1996 (latest available estimate). Yet there have been only three murders: two with knives (1984 and 1987) and one with a firearm (1997).

"After the law went into effect in 1982, crime against persons plummeted 74 percent compared to 1981, and fell another 45 percent in 1983 compared to 1982. And it has stayed impressively low. In addition to nearly non-existent homicide (murders have averaged a mere 0.19 per year), the annual number of armed robberies, residential burglaries, commercial burglaries, and rapes have averaged, respectively, 1.69, 31.63, 19.75, and 2.00 through 1998."

With all the attention that has been heaped upon the lawful possession of firearms lately, you would think that a city that requires gun ownership would be the center of a media feeding frenzy. It isn't. The fact is I can't remember a major media outlet even mentioning Kennesaw. Can you? The reason is obvious. Kennesaw proves that the presence of firearms actually improves safety and security. This is not the message that the media want us to hear. They want us to believe that guns are evil and are the cause of violence. The facts tell a different story.

What is even more interesting about Kennesaw is that the city's crime rate decreased with the simple knowledge that the entire community was armed.

The bad guys didn't force the residents to prove it. Just knowing that residents were armed prompted them to move on to easier targets. Most criminals don't have a death wish. There have been two occasions in my own family when the presence of a handgun averted potential disaster. In both instances the gun was never aimed at a person and no shot was fired. Yet, in both cases the thugs bent on criminal mischief decided to take their ambitions elsewhere and my family remained safe. Only God knows what would have happened if a firearm had not been handy.

Yes, there are times when gun accidents occur. There are many more accidents involving automobiles, airplanes, bathroom shower stalls and backyard swimming pools, however. And let's not forget that freedom is risky business. Freedom allows people to make mistakes recognizing that the alternative is worse.

A local newspaper columnist recently said that other nations are free without possessing firearms. He fails to see the obvious fact that people who are not free to own firearms are not free. Many people live their entire lives and never know a day of real freedom. And, while I'm sure that there are those who would choose to live without freedom, there are some of us who would rather die free than live enslaved.

Thanks for posting that Racegal, I didn't know that about Kennesaw, home of TAPCO. :D

Tiger, the NRA publishes reports every month about people deterring criminals with their weapons. It's not a fantasy. What you say about the pros makes sense, but I doubt if carrying would make things worse in most of those cases either.

Sorry,tigerclaw,I didn't know the article wasn't yours.

I agree,if a band of roving thugs intends to ambush and/or kill you, you're probably shit-out-of-luck.But,not everyone lives in the types of neighborhoods where these things happen.Like I said,in my city the drug problem has steadily increased over the last 5 years or so,but the population was already heavily armed beforehand (PA/Blair County is ccw friendly). So,most of the muggings are occuring where these guys live, they're not driving into nice neighborhoods and attacking people (if things keep getting worse, who knows?),as they know there's a much greater chance of facing armed resistance.If/when I need to venture into the bad areas of the city,I expect trouble, and 'pack' accordingly, and i'm well aware of the tactics they use to get your guard down.As I said before,i'm paranoid to a fault,so I always expect the worst, and act accordingly (call 911 on the cell instead of running up to assist the curbside 'victim').

There are some troublemakers in the neighborhood where I work.I found that most times these guys will look you in the eye to see if you're scared/intimidated,and if you glare right back at them, they say 'hi' and keep going, figuring you for a baddass or someone with nothing to lose.

All that being said,i'd still rather be in trouble with the law for drawing on someone than be dead in a back alley for not trying.

NP. I agree with you complitely. I, for once do not pack, I live in Illinois. Nor will I ever pack. Not because I do not believe in its effectiveness, but because I have a very stressfull job, I am a Network Administrator in a shipment company. Considering that people in the office, programmers, managers and even Customer Service reps occasionally snap, and I often have been taken to the edge of snapping, I would rather not have my trusty CZ on me at that time. I have not snapped and punched a wall, or, like my coworker, punched through a computer monitor screen, or, like my other co worker threw a phone against the wall. However, if I am to snap, I would much rather not have my CZ near me. I WOULD though keep it in my car. As far as bad neighbourhoods - I don't go there. As far as dumb white cracker rich kids from Highland Park and Deerfield, who listen to too much rap and now they think that they are "original gangstas", I do not need a gun against them:-).

Yes. just the KNOWLEDGE that a potential target is packing some heat and can put a cap in your ass will deterre criminals.

Anybody can get ambushed. If you have a gun you still have a chance. If you dont you have very little chance. Im not worried about getting robbed, I worry about being killed. Its a good idea to avoid bad areas. Also dont go around drunk, especially alone. There was a study done in Dade County FL. They determined that you are most likely to be murdered at 2:am with a good friend while outside a bar. Just avoid that situation. If someone asks you for the time, dont look at your watch. Thats when you will be hit. Just show your watch to them. Any one have any other tips?

Thanks for translating all that! A very interesting read, and for what little it is worth, I teach much the same (in a less colourful fashion :) ) in my standard CHL courses.

The only thing that I can take exception to is this line:

Everyone knows that the best police in the world is American

Having shot with cops both from and all over the world, American cops may be near the top (on average) but there are much better floating around. The best that I've run into thus far had a tendency to be fluent in Hebrew :blues:

When I was working on my Criminology degree, years and years ago and on another continent, the crusty old bastard teaching the Street Survival course liked to remind us that guns were NOT magic wands, and just waving one would not make the problem go away. Some people are too crazy to care, some don't care anyway, and the scary smart ones know that most people can NOT pull the trigger any (no matter what).

Situational awareness and a brain are more important than any weapon short of pulling out and nuking the site from orbit.

You welcome. I translated it, because I wanted to show what a specialist thinks about Gun control even without being an NRA member. BTW Dmitry "Goblin" Puchkov wrote on his site the following:

"There was yet another testimony that the Citizens should be armed. In USA a dumb teen offed 32 people. Why? Because he was the only one with the pistol. If the students and the teacher would have been armed, everything would have ended differently, a platoon (in this case he means "bunch, group") of students would have opened rapid fire and the teacher would have directed it. Even if they would have missed, the shooting would have attracted other students and teachers, also armed.

Trapped under fire, The freak would have been shot as a rabid dog he is."

Dmitry Puchkov is indeed a very colorful person. He retired from the police after an injury and after seeing that unlike during the soviet times, the police are not respected anymore. His hobbies are classical literature, music and linguistics. He speaks English and German on the level of native. Self taught. He started to translate videogames. Later on, he moved on to translated movies. Among them are: "Alien", "Snatch", "Usual Suspects" and over two dosen others. He, however, gained incredible popularity (and wealth) by creating a complitely unique nitch on the market. He would make a "funny" translation of the movies.

Basically, he would take the movie, replace the dialog and music complitely, and sell it like that. The translations are mix of his own ideas, refferences to Russian books and movies, and of course, russian jokes. He translated such movies as "Matrix" - In his translation it became "Shmatrix" (SHmat is roughly torn peace of meat), in his version the movie's plot that the Nazies have won world war two, as they created the first computer which altered reality. The only hope of humanity is a Soviet Armored train which traverses the sewers of Berlin, as they are trying to hack the computer. Other translations are: "Star wars: Storm in a glass" - a political parody on "Operation Desert Storm", his greatest claim to fame, however is "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"Boys from da hood and da ring", "Two crashed towers" (In Russian crashed tower means loosing one's mind), and "Return of the bum". (Considering that Aragorn has no job, land, and lives on whatever elves give him, that makes him a bum).

The music selection is incredible, the dialogs are hillarious (though you have to BE RUSSIAN to understand them fully, as the refferences to literature, culture and history are numerous).

He is employed full time by Russian TV translating Sopranos. When I was in Russia Jan 2003- Dec 2005, I seen numerous movies with his translations. His translations are FLAWLESS. He translates not word by word, but the meaning too. He is so good, that he even finds appropriate translations to slang. He speaks with an accent, however, his vocabulary is that of someone who has a Masters Degree in English language from a US university.

He has a website Oper.ru (oper is short for Operupolnomochennyi - Senior Law Enforcer, a policeman trained specifically in criminal investigation and in arrest and disabling of criminals. The very word Oper, came from German Ober, as Russian Law enforcement system was always based on Prussian and German). He writes commentaries on anything from political issues to videogames. He recently wrote and produced two videogames.

Amazing thing is, that he still, on occasion, participates in detention of the criminals, however, as a private citizen. He also started a campaing about rat infestation, a problem which the city long ignored. However, when Dmitry, who is somewhat a celeberty, started shooting rats from a pellet gun, it attracted huge attention in the media and among population. Needless to say that the city immediately found the funds needed for rat extermination...

He is known for his acidic, sarcastic sence of humor, and his scepticism about both, mass culture, and mass media.

"Whoever pays for the TV stations - controls the country" He writes. "Plebeans which make up 90% of the population will believe anything on TV. If it is NOT on TV it didn't happen. The approach of "bread and entertainment" which dates back to the Rome, came back into our people with incredible intensity as soon as everything became allowed without responcibility" he continues. "People are addicted to the TV, which entertains them and takes away their basic need to think logically and with great sobriety before making a decision."

Dmitry Puchkov sounds cool. There use to be a tv show where a man and his two robot friends would watch cheesy old movies and ad lib and make wise cracks throughout it. Real funny stuff. Science fiction theater 2000 is what I think it was. Kung Pow Enter the fist did something real similar with an old kung fu movie they blended with some live action to make a funny funny movie. Takes a lot of creative genius to pull it off and your man sounds like a real live wire.

This is not really making wise cracks. It is REWRITING entire script of the movie, making it into a farce, while having to deal with the fact that it still has to make sence. However, where he truly shines is the music selection.

For example. In the beginning of Two Towers, where there is a scene of snow covered mountains, he puts in a theme from Star Wars when they where on the Ice covered planet.

When they go through the marches, the music becomes the theme of Grimpen Marshes, from the Russian movie "Hound of Baskerville", you really gotta see and hear that. I shown it to some American friends. They LOVED it.

Also, when Nazgul on a dragon shows up, the "Sonne" by Rammstein plays. In fact, it is timed so, that it goes in rhythm with the beating of the dragon's wings.

Needless to say that the names of the characters are twisted too, interestingly enough they already do sound pretty silly in Russian.

The dialog is hillarious too. Another example is from "Storm in the Glass". Right before the two Jedi gets ambushed in the beginning of the film. One say "How can we kill them? Our Pokemon Sensei told us to think kind, gentle thoughts." To which the older Jedi replies "Yes, you should think kind gentle thoughts while you waste those whom you are ordered to waste by your superiors."

Goblin, however, said that he has no time to do more "funny" translations, as his time is taken with doing serious translations, including Sopranos and other movies. He has more contracts from Russian TV then he has time, actually. He, however, created a Studo for people who worked with him on the funny translations, and they will begin making more movies by the end of the year.

Goblin is VERY politically active. From his writings, you can see that his political stance is a mix of a high dose of sceptisism at all who are in a hurry to cover USSR history with mud and crap. Combined with the healthy admirations for Scandinavian style Democracies...

What I find admirable about him the most is that he is self educated complitely.

+ 1!!!! What a great article. I think the analogies are right on. Thank you for posting this Ronswin!

This is beautiful, man... I am going to cry... But, I will hold out, and ask you this question: WHO IS WATCHING THE SHEEPDOG?? WHO MAKES SURE THAT THE SHEEPDOG WON'T START EATING SHEEP AND BLAMING THE WOLVES FOR THAT???

Or blaming sheep themselves for that? Or, this is even better, make sure that sheepdogs do their job. Remember, cops and swat and the rest of that whole bunch are under NO obligation to protect you. However, they ARE under obligation to be a source of revenue for the government. THINK about it, and think HARD. Before worshipping the cops and making them into demi god heroes. They have POWER, and POWER, as we all know, CORRUPTS...

I will trust a ghetto thug, before I will trust a policeman. "Ghetto thugs" as you would call them, saved my behind on at least 4 occasions. There was not a single time when I needed help that a policeman was there for me. When my dad got into a car crash, police took their sweet time getting there. When my parents appartment got robbed, police showed up 6 hours after the even, even though my folks called the cops. But police sure as hell got on time to do their honorable and brave duty at WAKO, RUBY RIDGE. And sure they were brave when they shot my friend Keith, because he "looked like a gangster". And, no, he was not a gang member, and no, he was not armed. And yes, I was there. So do not preach to me about how wonderful the cops are. In my mind, they are killers. Kieth would have second that option, that is if he could still talk.

Juggie you fuckin rock man!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!

Tigerclaw you have some serious issues bro. I hope you get some help somehwere. No two cops are exactly alike just like no two gangsta shitholes are...get a grip!

If you don't believe in CCW then that's fine. Open carry is an option, it may make you a target but whatever. All people don't live in the hood.

And, no, he was not a gang member, and no, he was not armed. And yes, I was there. So do not preach to me about how wonderful the cops are. In my mind, they are killers. Kieth would have second that option, that is if he could still talk.

There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, but he does have one real advantage. Only one. And that is that he is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population.

Juggernaut, you quote the movie in a sence that it was complitely misunderstood. The movie is MAKING FUN OF THAT ENTIRE ATTITUDE!!! The same attitude that you support.

Now, Cobra.

I have no problems with CCW, I am just pointing out to you that you need to have a VERY STABLE psychie to carry it. A person can be perfectly fine, not suffering from any mental problems, however, guess what. He has a hard day at work, and then he gets fired. Some jerk cuts him off in traffic. Birds crap on his car, and when he gets home, his wife starts nagging him and his kids rase a racket and go out of countrol and taunt him "Daddy is a bum" (seen that happen by the way). Some would just walk away. Some would get drunk (also not a good thing when you are packing some heat), and some people would just snap. If you snap and you are packing... guess what...

See what happened when a certain Mr Cho got picked on and some guys in Columbine got picked on. Bunch of bodies. This aspect needs to be addressed. I know myself for example, I have a very hot temper. I rather play it safe. A gun in my car? Yes. A gun in my house? Hell yeah. A gun on me? I dunno. I am a rather confrontational person. Not only would I rather not have a gun on me, I would rather a person whom I am arguing with also not have a gun on him. People are nuts. Comes from living so close to each other and yet not having true friends to talk to (thats why some people go to a social worker, just to have someone to listen to them). I am not sure that the next client who is asking me, that the outlook at our main server should give him access to his emails (while he is not allowed an access to the server himself), won't go nuts and pull a gun on me, next time I explain him the basics of network security and access levels.

Now, as far as cops go. Sure, they are not the same. In fact, I have nothing but respect for Criminal Investigators (Detectives). The problem is this: 1) I am of a mixed heritage (Ukrainian and Georgian), therefore, I don't look too white. I have been mistaken for Jordanian, for Puerto Rican. I have been harrased by cops numerous times, when I was driving home to my folks house when I was back in college:"What are you doing in this area?" "You sure you live here?" "Do you mind if we search your car?". Last time I checked driving an old Nissan Centra was not a crime. Looking Latino/Arabic wasn't a crime too.

I loved it when those cops from the safe white burbs would have 3 squad cars come and stand behind be before even one of them would approach me. What a bunch of cowards. A college student is on his way home from work, or from party, or from whatever. And they pull 3 squad cars just to ask him if he belongs in this neighbourhood (Deerfield Illinois, BTW).

Keith was not a gang member. That didn't stop them. They were not even punished for killing him. It was called "Justifiable". The same way when Chicago cops killed a female Northwestern Student. Yeah, she was black too. It was also ruled "justifiable".

Let me tell you a story. When I was back home, in USSR in Military College, we were taken to the real army maneuvers. Of course, we were assigned secondary roles and posts, we were like 16. It was a huge downpour at night.

We were told to stay in trenches. Two of our guys desided that trench is too cold and wet to sleep in. They got their sleeping bags and decided to sleep under a T-72 that was parked nearby.

At 4AM the tank moved... The guys got killed. The military tribunal had ruled the death of cadets to be a negligence of safety procedure and cleared the tank driver of all charges.

He killed himself a month later, unable to deal with the fact that he killed two youths. His suicide note was filled with remource and he begged forgiveness from the famlies of the cadets and from the cadets themselves. His concience would not be quiet. I do not see american policemen having problems with conciense after killing unarmed people. Not the guy who shot Kieth. Not the guy who shot that girl in Chicago. Not the Ruby Ridge Sniper, not the guys who burned Branch Davidians. Thats Ok. Different country, different values.

My biggest problem is that in USA, may see Policemen and military as some kind of superhuman heroes, without reapproach who can do no wrong. I am convinced that it is different:

they have NO responciblity to resque us (Check out the legality issues), they are armed. They have the power. Power corrupts. Who is watching the watcher? Who is watching over the police? Yet another department of the police.

Who all come from the street and file ranks and have more loyalty to each other then to the rules and laws and regulations. No two cops are alike. True. No two gangstas are alike. True. No two sysadmins are alike. True. However, stereotypes exist for a reason.

Ask yourself to whom the cops serve? Not to us. They are under NO LEGAL OBLIGATION to assist us. Yet, they are a source of revenue for the state. Ask yourself this question. To whom do they serve?

They have the power. The guns, the armor. Ask yourself, does such power not affects those who wield it?

If a cops were responcible to... lets say the State Governor office. If the "police above police" were political appointees... We would see a LOT of oversight and a LOT LESS crimes commited by cops.

I will also direct you to the attack on a female bartender by a cop, attack on a businessmen by a bunch of cops, and another attach by the brother of the cop who attacked a female bartender.

Once again, Jokes...... No more no less. You do knot know me well enough to know my mindset, you can only assume. Sometimes, People are even able to poke fun at one's self if one does not take one's self to seriously. I was hoping it would make you laugh, Not point the finger of judgment.

A lesson learned.

It did made me laugh. However, I was unable to fully conclude what was your goal. I figured that it was somehow supposed to point out the error in my judgement. Nevermind then.

I misunderstood. You made me laugh and smile. Though I did not like the movie, I saw it:-).

As far as Cops go. I have had more positive experience with street gangstas, then I have had with cops. I agree with Ice T complitely. Unless you are one of the elite, you may as well be black. It don't matter to the cops.

Some of us were not born with enough money or privilege to be "white".

I'm white trash! and society better learn to recognize the difference!

Young skinhead they call you hooligan

Just because you don't make any sense to them

You're a hardworking man whose paid his dues

But they still call you racist on the evening news

But the blood that runs right down your wrist

Don't come from a knife, but the cuts on your fist

Your torn up knuckles and faded blue jeans

Are the colors you wear and the life that you've seen

You tell the truth look people in the eye

Don't live your life in no baggy disguise.

Don't need no gang to watch my ass

Just loyal friendship and a pint of Bass

In the midst of the chaos and insanity

I'm a member of the working class society

We'll sweat in the ring and bleed in the streets

But our will and spirit can never be beat

You can shoot and you can kick but together we'll stick

Through thick and thin not stick or stone

Can break the bond that has here grown

Arm and Arm We Fight As One. ~DKM
