Wacky Ideas from a Newbie...

Recommended Posts

Hello,

A friend of mine bought his .308 Saiga at a gun show about month ago. He was like an excited little kid over his new purchase, while I thought it looked somewhat humble and "homely". That is, until we got it to the range... First time I shot it, I got a 2" 5-shot group with some surplus ammo that was about 50 years old. I fell in love. Call me crazy, but just I sold my Savage .308 so I could buy a Saiga next weekend at Knob Creek. You just can't beat fast follow-up shots. There should also be plenty of money left over for accessories.

I understand that I'm not going to get the accuracy of my Savage, but I have a few ideas that might help. I don't think any of these have yet been discussed here:

I came across this product for the Mini-14:

http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/m14805.htm

I don't know if the Saiga's barrel "whips" as bad as the Mini's, but is there any way to stiffen the barrel to improve accuracy?

Also, a semi-auto loses accuracy due to internal moving parts upon firing. What if there was a way to manually "turn off" the gas block so the rifle fires like a bolt-action? The Yugo SKS's have a valve that does this when the grenade sight is flipped up. I fired several groups from one in single shot mode, and I got smaller groups. Would the results be the same for the Saiga? Would it cause any damage to the locking lugs or other parts?

I plan on doing the pistol grip conversion to my Saiga, but I'm not sure which fire control group to use from Red Star Arms. Their site lists trigger kits for SAR,MAK, VEPR, etc., but Saiga .308 is not listed. I know one of these will work because the Saiga is referenced on other pages as having the trigger group in it. Which one do I buy? I emailed RSA about this, but haven't gotten a reply yet.

Last question: Is this scope mount a good one? It will fit the Saiga?

I like the low position. I don't plan on using the open sights - as long as the mount holds zero.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi there

using any saiga weapon with the gas system deactivated is harmless to the weapon , here in England we have ar15 , m1 carbine , m1a , mp5 , ak103 , ak105 , dragunov svd , etc etc that are made specially as manual repeating rifles , you have to pull and release the bolt after every shot to reload the weapon and they function faultlessly in this format. as you have mentioned accuracy can improve due to the lack of inertia from the internal parts reciprocating the action but the down side is a slight increase in recoil as no gass is tapped from the barrel on firing and so all proppelant gasses vent forewards increasing the jet effect.

all the best

possenti, remember a couple differences from the other Saigas that apply to the .308 models:

- There are not 'trigger transfer pins'. So that step is completely eliminated.

- There are 2 spot welds holding the baseplate to the receiver as well as 2 rivets. All 4 will need to be drilled in order to remove the plate.

- The PG nut hole should be precut, you can tell by taking off the action cover and looking near where the stock trigger exits.

Possenti,i have a couple good low mount scope mounts in the for sale section if your interested.

Well see, that's gonna be a problem because Possenti hasn't posted here in over a year and a half.

You have 24kshooter to thank for ressurecting and replying to a post that is over 2 YEARS OLD. This is one of several posts (at least 15) that he has resurrected and replied to obviously dated information.

I can't figure out if he is doing this because he thinks it is funny, or if he is trying to be an outright asshole.

I've been guilty of ressurrecting old threads before. It happened because I did a search and never looked at how old the results were. Shit happens.

But have you done 15 in a row? In the span of one day? Then waited a week and done it again?
