dinzag 31
Popped him opening morning - first light. 8 point - 165 lbs - 19" outside 150gr Remington core-lokt (pardon my appearance - I was up 'til 3 enjoying the pre-hunt festivities) That and sitting in the freezing rain all morning. edited to swap in a smaller pic... dinzag 31
...and second kill Shot this spike - he was really screwed up. Had to leave him. He hopped up and looked injured. I put him down. He'd been shot before in the neck and had a deformed antler on the left side. Also had tons of mucus coming out of his eyes & nose. His neck was bloated up and when I rolled him over I seen what the problem was. There was infection oozing out the old wound like someone stepped on a custard donut. I'll save the wound & puss pics for later... Edited November 21, 2007 by dinzag
dinzag 31
And now he's dinner! (the 8-point)

DLT 1,646
Nice! I see you used a 16" Blondie to get the job done. No scope, so is it safe to assume your shot was under 100 yards?
dinzag 31
Thanks guys! Yeah he was about 75 yards. 100 is about the limit, shooting prone with the irons, for a really accurate shot. I think out of 20 rounds most were inside 3" when I last shot. I've never grouped it with a scope but I imagine I could cut that down a bit. That short barrel is awesome for storming the swamps & running through brush.

fuzzygunman 0
With a scope on my saiga I am grouping on average 1 1/2-2 in with military ammo @ 100 yrds and 1in with federal ammo using a simmons 4-12x40 wal-mart special.

nycGUNguy 61
Those steaks are making me hungry! Just wondering if you're planning on a stew also? Or maybe a nice spicy chili. Great pics. By the way, your package is on the way. I know you will have a Happy Thanksgiving with all that meat! nyclu3

U.S. Pratorean 1,234
Excellent bag on the first buck, good job and good decision to dispatch the second. Makes you want to neck shoot the POS that probably took a shitty shot they couldn't make in the first place and did not follow up on tracking it. Probably some asshole poacher. Here in Texas we neck shoot poachers. I never could understand why people take neck shots, it ruins alot of meat, ruins your mount and is a poor choice for one shot stop. Enjoy! THAT'S KINDA GROSS! .... ...... Hey, congrats Brian on the pair of bucks!!!! Yep, you did look kinda tired in that photo.... but that's an absolute beut of a Michigan buck you got yourself. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family bro! ~Gary
dinzag 31
DLT - he hung at 163lbs. This boy still hadn't ran his layer of back fat off yet. I haven't scored the rack yet. Typically bucks up there run a little lighter on average, I got a 8 point a few years ago in the late season with very similiar size rack, and he hung at 140lbs. My father-in-law's 10 point ran 165lbs. U.S. Praetorian - Yes agreed, a shot in the chest is my first choice unless it's really close like the spike I will go with the base of the neck. It's always sad to see wounded animals out in the woods. We figured the spike had to have been poached since rifle season just started and the wound wasn't recent. Brown bottle flu Gary, happens every year - lol. Thanks!
macbeau 902
Congrats Brian! That's my kinda fast food... That big buck of your's make the "doberman with antlers" we have around here look really pathetic. It's a shame about the spike, but good job on putting it out of it's misery... Macbeau sends... Capt. Ferguson 0
I'll bet the second buck had a run in with a bow hunter earlier in the fall. That would explain the wound so high- tree stand shot. I used to bow hunt but I quit, I just don't have the time to practice every other day to guarantee clean quick kills.....neither do alot of bow hunters but it doesn't stop them! RangerM9 1
dude, don't you have to wear orange while hunting over there in MI?

dinzag 31
Captain, it was definitely a rifle wound. Could have been from the early youth season or a violator. The property there is mostly ridges & valleys so it's not uncommon to have odd angles on shots. Ranger, yes we do have to wear orange. Actually that pic was taken several hours after I shot him. I was already in for a couple shots and some coffee. He was all straightened out - I had to jump on his back to get him to squish down a little. That's why he's sitting up like that. These guys were shot on the grandma's property over in Bear Lake - Manistee County. (northwest lower peninsula) He's an average mature buck for the area.
macbeau 902
Damn Brian! You almost look like Chris Elliot from "Cabin Boy" in that first pic.... I hope you've gotten some sleep since then... Otherwise, you may end up looking like Andy Dick and who know where that might lead...my stars...! LOL Nice kills - BTW! Better than I have done this year... Macbeau sends,,, Edited November 30, 2007 by macbeau
