What you need to start reloading.

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the info.

Right now Amazon has a deal with the ABC's and Modern Reloading 2nd Edition for $30 shipped.

I am just getting started into reloading also. I'm buying a used Pacific Super Deluxe single stage press and the powder measure for it for $45.

I know in the long run reloading will be cost effective however the initial layout for all that gear is a little more than I originally thought. On the plus side, members here have been kind enough to share their reloading data so I at least know where to start once I figure out how to use the gear. For the .308 I really want to try Bossman's recipe he posted some time back.

Not to honk my own horn but I brought this up some time ago...Sept 6, 2007.

Just wondering if anyone reloads their 12ga rounds? I have looked into it and it seems fairly easy and

inexpensive to get into. I have a good supply of once fired hulls on hand but I figuered it into the

calculation below just FYI.

Midway.Com is the source I chose for all materials listed below:

(One time purchase) Lee Load-All 2 Shotshell Press 12 Gauge 2-3/4", 3" = $35.00

Once-Fired Remington Shotshell Hulls 12 Gauge 2-3/4" Bag of 100 = $6.00

Remington Shotshell Wads 12 Gauge SP12 1-1/4 oz Bag of 250 = $8.00

Lawrence Magnum Lead Shot #7-1/2 25 lb Bag = $50.00

Remington Premier STS Primers #209 Shotshell Box of 1000 = $32.00

Hodgdon Universal Clays Smokeless Powder 1 lb = $18.00

*all prices were rounded up the next dollar.

So for $150 dollars +shipping your pretty much set up. I know I could go to WalMart and pick up

some value pack (100 rounds) for $17.25 out the door but I think this will make up for itself and be

more interesting to make your/my own loads.

What does anyone think about this???

'MCASgt New River' ,

Sorry I missed your posting, but since I never reloaded for shotguns, I would have just skipped past it.

One word of caution for you.

The one thing missing from your list is the absolute most important and that is a reloading manual. As I said I have never reloaded for shotguns, but you need a reloading manual to tell you how much powder to use with each unique load i.e. If you are loading 00 buckshot the powder load will be different than if you are loading for birds.

Good reloading manuals really "teach" you how to reload.

Another word of caution on components,

I reloaded pistol and rifle calipers (probably 18-12,000 rounds) and one thing I learned after a rather substantial investment is:

you may want to consider buying only the minimum amounts as you get started.

I found and other reloaders will tell you too, that no two guns will shoot the same on the same load. I would say this is very true about pistols and rifles, but with shotguns your reloads will vary as:

- is your crimp tight (how tight)

-what kind of wad you use

- how your primers seat

- how "hot" is your primer or powder

-is the primer the right one for the powder

-is the primer firing hole clean and open

-is your hull packed tight, how tight,

- if you have used the hulls before, how many times have you used the hull

I guess I am putting up a flag that reloading is a science. I learned the most as a beginner by watching a friend as he was reloading.

I mentioned before that I have stopped reloading, but if the price of ammo goes up, I may have to start up again.

I hope you don't mind my input,

Input is key in this game....Get the load wrong and it might be your last if you know what I mean. Any load data your willing to share is whats really holding me up at this point. Looking for #7-1/2 & 8 as well as 00, 000 and slug data if you have it.

Also I have litterially several hundred rounds of once fired Win, Fed and various other hulls available to anyone that wants to pay shipping. I'll never get around to reloading then all, and it's a nice way to leave the open country side free and clean of red, black and green plastic littered everywhere.

I made a couple threads that should be helpful to you:

Reccomended Reloading Manual for Shotshells

Low Recoil #4 buck 12ga load

That reloading manual has many buckshot loads, different gauges, lengths of shells, for different wads, different sizes of buckshot, mixed buckshot size load(s?), buffered buckshot, and slugs. Oh and blanks, if that interests anybody for animal scaring or whatever. Everything in the book they have for sale on their site, like 25lb bags of buckshot at $2/lb.

The load I offer there is very mild, and not from the book.
