Eric and I are using scout mounts for our optics, I like my aim dot up foreward it make shooting with both eyes open a lot easier what are you thoughts.

below is my latest creation, a cheap NcStar red dot on a cheap CAA 12 gage barrel mount. It I like this set up I'll be upgrading it! Both the optic and mount

My first use of a red dot was on one of the first imported 12 gauge Hastings barrels for rifled sabots (1983?). Back then the sight mount was directly on the barrel, I liked it, still do and use it every year. You either use a long eye relief handgun scope or a zero power dot. I can honestly say I hate the scout set up with a scope in low light. Absolute crap. OK from a steady position but if light is low and you are on the move, EL SUCKO. With a red dot, it is great except in very low light and a distant target the dot over powers your vision and all you see is a dot, even with a 3 MOA dot. There are laws about deer hunting and sun rise/sun set. I follow them, but the edge of darkness is hard on a scout set up.

When I got into AR's about 8 years ago, the first configuration I did was with a flat top and an extended Swan sleeve so I could put a red dot as far out as possible.

The reason being I had 30 years of shotgunning under my belt so putting the red dot far foward basically made it function like a high tech shotgun bead for me. So now I was shooting a rifle like a shotgun, for me that was a good thing. I consistently take deer with that rifle at 125 yards, with one shot. They never go more than a few steps. Every deer has been moving when shot. So one shot accuracy good enough for ethical kills is great in that set up to 125 yards plus.

So going full circle, I would not use a red dot on a shotgun unless it was as far forward as I could get it and as low as possible. For self defense, I would take it off the gun or leave it turned off and light up the target with a surefire. My HD guns are 870's.

So unless you are faced with a low light or night shoot, I think you will like your set up. Sorry if too much info, I figure if you know this you will advance on it for me!

My thought was a rib that goes out and holds the smallest optic possible like the one that fits in the dovetail for the rear sight. Isn't there a guy around here with something like for sale? I think I saved his web page.

that would be JAMMER

he does nice work. Im sure the site would benefit from him becoming a business member here, and I am sure he will as well, with the expected surge of saiga owners and serious users of them. LEO are picking them up. comp guys are picking them up. a lot of hunters are picking them up.
