Get use to it. This is the wave of the future for shooters. With the US FRN going down the tubes as we speak and commodity prices(copper and lead) going up inversely, cheap, imported ,surplus ammo will be a thing of the past. This happened in the 70's when the gov't(Nixon) destroyed the Dollar with his antics back then. No cheap ammo could be found anywhere unless you liberated(stole it) it from a military base or reloaded. Many people did really bad jobs of reloading back then which blew up a lot of rifles. Cheap 308 ball was unheard of and 223 was as scarce as hen's teeth. Those who shot 30-06 had it made if they got it from DCM or National Guard shooting team ammo lots. People today have been spoiled with cheap case lots of ball ammo avalible almost anywhere. Back then, anyone who had any surplus ball at all(usually liberated US stuff!), the world quickly beat a path to your door to scarf it up. And even then it was never shot up unless you had another source to replace it. We even went to US military shooting ranges to pick up any ammo left behind by lazy US commanders who rather leave it there then take it back and have to re-inventory it and fill out all the stupid paper work(in triplicate forms of course!) that went with the process.!!

These 22 lookalikes will be real popular, especially at assault carbine shooting matches for people who want to train with what they have yet more cheaply than shooting up their soon to be irreplaceable defensive rifle ammo. The liberals will have gun control without the regulations they've always tried to shove down our throats. Without ammo or practice, guns are totaly useless except as very expensive and inefficient clubs!! So get'em while you can before someone shoots up a school or a mall with one and they make them illegal to import to US lowly slaves who they fear having any means of rebelling against their socialist policies and decrees.(welfare, socialist security, foreign aid, corporate subsidies, medicare)

I was thinking that for those of us in non-SBR states..

Get a GSG5.

Have a gunsmith lop off the barrel at the end of the handguard, convert paperwork to pistol and MAYBE, IF ATF WILL APPROVE, install a collapsing stock and permanently weld it in the collapsed position. This ensures that it is NOT intended to be fired from the shoulder.

This gives you a pistol with mp5 ergos and appearance. Even paying for form 1 taxes and manufacturer rework it'd still be under $1k which beats Bobcats and similar clones.

Mine's on order, but check out the site, OEM suggest that you shoot high velocity rounds. I would think that would mean something like stingers, someone or Atlantic Firearms correct me if I'm wrong.

No. Stingers are "hyper-velocity" not "high-velocity". Anything supersonic, like bulk pack ammunition is high velocity. Standard velocity is subsonic stuff, like target ammo. Bullets marked subsonic are barely if every slower than bullets marked standard.

a finnish friend of mine has one with a fixed silencer (which puts it in the rifle class, for some odd reason and makes administrative hassle smaller). it cycles just fine with subsonic, though i havent asked if the gunsmith modified anything else (like a lighter recoil spring perhaps?).

I'm not sure what site/forum I read it on, but apparently these rifles do function with subsonic rounds. Someone showed the rifle in a pic with some targets that they shot. As part of their use, they shot some subsonic stuff and it worked.... at least that is what they posted. Now my only question is whether it will function with a shorter barrel with subsonic ammo (or is the barrel actually short and the fake suppressor welded on?).

Yes $33 -$34 ish range on the mags

So an adequate supply of mags will run almost as much as the gun, right?

Worth the money if I still had an HK94 for training similarities alone but as a range toy for shooting up a brick of 22.. my thumbs won't let me own a 22 that I don't have at least a dozen mags for

:D

Don't forget Calico is back. I like mine pretty good...lots of fun loaded up with some Stingers.

Weren't the helical magazines known for their lack of reliability??

Yes. I've been told by two of my elders to never buy a Calico because of the magazines.

Here's an impromptu review lifted from the 10-8 forums:

"I picked up my GSG-5 today and made a short trip to the range. Here are my first impressions;

Overall out of the box it looks good. Selector is easy to manipulate, mags were a bit tight in the mag well and the mag catch is a bit stiff but I expect it will break in a bit. The rear sight is configured like the HK rifle sights not like the MP5 sight. The apertures are a bit small and I will be opening one up as I use the third largest opening on my MP5s. Overall barrel diameter is thin, but with the faux can on you'll never see it anyway.

Went to the range and did an extensive internet/gunwriter torture test (IE: 190 rounds ). Ammo was CCI mini mags, mags were loaded to 20 rounds (will hold 24, designed to hold 22).

In that time I had 2 failures of the bolt to lock back on the last round of the mag. While the MP5 does not do this the GSG-5 is designed to. I also had one occasion of a failure to feed on the first round of a mag. On locking the charging handle to the rear and then releasing it again the round then chambered. Beyond that there were no issues.

I did not shoot for any type of accuracy as I was pressed for time (night shift tonight). Targets were a 8 x 10" plate and 8" plate rack at 25 yards. Sights were hitting just a bit high right out of the box. The trigger was a little rough, but certainly not a deal breaker.

I did notice some wear on the upper receiver tube where the cocking handle notch is. I was loading in the same fashion as an MP5 (bolt to the rear, mag in give it a tug, slap cocking handle forward). I'm guessing this will be a normal occurrence and I will keep an eye on it to see if it continues or if it's just a matter of surface wear during break in. Again. nothing to get bent about, but something I noticed.

Overall it's a pretty neat little blaster. Obviously this was a very limited first outing. It will be interesting to see what experience others have and what bugs more extensive use brings about. Given the price of .22 ammo and the rising prices of centerfire ammo I expect some of these guns will see some impressive round counts. "

Sounds like a sure winner !

I have the M-100 with the thumbhole wooden stock. I bought it from a lying scumbag POS from the internet. The pics in his add were from when the rifle was new....I have no idea how many rounds actually went through it. The magazine he sent had some issues which seemed to be wear issues. I ordered a new one and it wasn't all that hot out of the box. A light sanding and polish on the mag feed lips took care of all issues. I guess I don't consider my Calico 22LR a personal defense weapon so I don't mind an ocasional jam. It really likes Stingers, buy my rifle currently finstions pretty good with any high velocity round. When you wind her up and get her going it is a lot of fun.
