22_Shooter 1,560
I figure this is the perfect place to ask this: When I've seen shooting comps on TV, there's always a guy/gal who stands right behind the shooter and follows him/her around holding something near the back of their head. What is that?
loki0629 55
I believe that's the range safety officer with a timer. I've seen that on some of the pics posted on this board and just assumed as much. Although you know what they say about assumptions...
BobAsh 582
It's a timer.
Garys4598 1,065
No Bob, he/she is the person that gives you a swift kick in the arse if you do something unsafe! .... .... .... .... ........ (Just kidding... he/she is the timer.)
BobAsh 582
... holding something near the back of their head. What is that? He's asking about the device, not the person, GARY!
lammy 1
... holding something near the back of their head. What is that? He's asking about the device, not the person, GARY! Is it a timer the RSO has to click or is more advanced to where it times and counts the shots to give an exact number?
BobAsh 582
The RSO clicks the timer to start the cycle. The timer beeps loudly, signaling the shooter to start the stage which is why the RSO holds it up to the shooter's head. The timer then records each shot with a microphone, timing each one. GTOShootr 0
You can use a timer on your own. You can hang one off your belt and set it to a delayed or a random start to the beep. That way you can do stuff like figure out and record baselines for your draw, reload, splits between shots, transition times between targets, all sorts of stuff. Say you have the timer running and fire a shot, do a reload and fire another shot, reviewing the split between your shots gives you your reload time. With the stuff people do to their Saigas like extended mag releases, porting, comps, and the one I'm looking forward to the most, the magwell, you can get some objective answers to the differences they make. Does porting or a muzzle brake improve your splits? How much does a mag release set up for a weak hand reload speed things up? By how much will a Saiga with a magwell smoke a Benelli on reloads? Just look at the timer. Edited January 15, 2008 by GTOShootr
Wakal 10
That "timer" is actually a memory reset button. When it goes off, your plan is forgotten... Alex
