Veprguy made this post and I have been thinking about signing up for the gaurd or reserves.

Gents, having just gotten back from Iraq and going again soon, .308 does a lot to a man and you don't really want to see it for entertainment. I used to think about the same way too, but trust me, shooting people, even the ones that desperately deserve it, while very necessary, is just gross. If you don't believe me, I know a few recruiters that can give you your opprotunity, oh BTW the targets get to shoot back though. Happy hunting-Veprguy

His post gave me the idea about asking here if there are any dos or don'ts when inlisting in the military.

I am 27 and I don't want to move so I think the Main branches of military are out of the question unless some one has a valid argument to consider.

I still want to serve my country.

Go Navy unless you really wish to be ground pounder. The ground stuff is Ok for a young guy but at 27 you are getting over the hill for infantry and the like. You can gain good training and skills in the Naval Service and you can last a good long time since the physical requirements are not as demanding (unless you are a medical corpsman assigned to the Marines)

Gunslinger 308 The most valuable thing that you will learn in the military is YOU. I can assure you that you have no idea of what you are capable of doing untill Uncle Sam shows you! Both phisical endurance and mental toughness are areas where you will find exactly what your limits are.And believe me untill then you have no ide of just WHAT you are capable of!

The educational oppurtunities are great, but unless you need college money that is not generally the major consideration at your age.

If you feel the calling to serve, I would recommend the navy or the airforce, and also information tecnoligy or communicaton as the best fields to persue. They will both translate into good civillian jobs.

Good luck and may god bless-if you choose to serve, choose carefully. This is not like a civilian job, once you sign up you don't have the option to quit.

P.S. Do not believe ANYTHING that a recruiter tells you. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING--IF THEY WILL NOT PUT IT IN WRITING IT IS A LIE.

saltpeter I have no desire to police our own country. Many good people are doing that as a career right now. I prefer to be a model citizen at home and watch out for for the good, the bad, or the ugly as a citizen. I believe we all have a civic duty to keep ourselves and our community on the straight and narrow. In other words we should police ourselves.

I don't want to leave my career as a auto body technician for the police field or even a military career but I do have the urge to serve my country and my family with a 2 year stint or more if called for in the reserves( I don't know if this amount of time is right or not). I wouldn't mind fighting on the ground. I don't have dreams of grandure or relish the violence and carnage but I want to fight for freedom and honor the men who have fallen protecting my freedom! And, God willing, I want to come back to my family and life.

Are there any reservist or gaurdsmen that have any more pointers?

Thanks for all the advice.

gunslinger, I am 32, and I myself inquired this year as to which reserves I could join to go serve in iraq. one of my own requirements was that I would go only if I got to kill terrorists.

(someone give me crap for that statement, go ahead, I heard it all from my family and friends already here. the recruiter i spoke to understood me and my reasons completely, as I lost people I know on 9/11, and my uncle's route as a pilot for american airlines was the morning boston to LA flight that hit one of the towers. it was his first day off in 13 days, but we didnt find out until that evening that it wasnt him that we saw die that day. I will never forget that, and I owe it to our enemy to return the favor someday.)

APPARANTLY the only thing the army had for my "old" self that fit the bill was MP duty. I have zero desire to be a cop, myself. Nor do i want to get stuck in some prison somewhere guarding these fools. So I didnt do it. Also, going overseas in the reserve is mostly volunteer only at this point, and is also a one year tour, altought it can be as long as they feel like if they think that they dont have someone capable of taking your duties over for you.

what I did learn was that the army reserve will take you as a combat support type until you are 35, the marines have much a sooner cutoff of i believe the guy told me 29. all of the recruiters want 4 years now out of you, and boot camp is 86 days, which you do right away. the air force is a good option if you are technically educated or want to be, and thier cutoff is later like the army's is, as well as the navy's cutoff age. I believe every branch of the reserve will give you money tword your house or education, but it is only a token offering of 10 grand (ten grand is nothing...you cant even buy a new car for that) or something.

Back when I was younger, I had an offer made to me, in writing no less, from the army for the guaranteed training for and transfer to command of a brigade of tanks/armor in europe, AND they also not only offered it but also SHOWED me 40,000 in cash to sign on. (I am told this is unusual, even for the time) I did extremely well on thier tests apparantly, and my family has medals in different wars and branches of the service, which also counted for somethig apparantly, as they did mention this as part of why they were making the offer to me. WHY didnt i do it? ...it was mostly because i didnt want to be the first target on the modern battlefield in a command and control vehicle. my calculated life expectancy was about ten minutes in such a vehicle, in the modern battlefield. in hindsight, i would have been perfectly safe, but I didnt know that then, so o well. my other reason was they wanted me to sign on for twelve, yes, twelve years minimum for this offer they made. like these guys tell you, if it isnt in writing its a lie. this was in writing and i still didnt go for it. Its really up to you, and what you want to contribute and get out of your service. I chose jobs in the civilian sector for a time to build technical equipment for the military instead. Now I choose to stay at home and wait and watch for attacks here instead, hopeing that I wont ever have to help the local (inadequate and crooked) police repel what I think is coming soon. I wish we had more city police like a lot of the law enforcement that are members of this forum where I am. They have honor and dignity, and this is missing here in the local city police department. this is neither here nor there, so I will move on and finish what i was trying to say.

another option is, if you live in a state where you have oceanfront in your state, the coast guard might be a feasible choice.

there are several members here that are national guardsmen, hopefully they will chime in here soon and give you some specifics that might help you make a decision either way.

whatever decision you make, make sure it is something that you know what you are getting into, and be sure of your reasons for it. like these guys are telling you, it is a BIG step in your life, and they will own you until your time is up, and even then still own you if you are good at what you do for them.

I am weighing all my options and haven't even talked to any recrouters yet. I have only talked to a few military people about thier service and friends and family( not even my dad yet and he was in the army once). I want to talk to real people first before the recruiters.

If when I grow old and I have served my country( the one I believe in, not the liberal and whatever else government), then I think I can age and die proud to raise my family and send them forth into this world knowing I helped preserve freedom.( I know, big ideals, but this is a big life issue.)

Question: The reserves I figure would send you straight to war now, what about the gaurd?

It's very nobel of you to want to serve. Many members have given you great advice. Saltpeter gave you and excellent direction. Law Enforcement is not just about telling people what to do. It's about serving your community. You should look into airport security and the Homeland Security Forces. What about being a Border Patrol Agent and really being on the front lines of our Nation.

I my self have volunteered to serve my country twice and loved the service time very much. I was a Air Force reservist first and then later joined the Army and became Airborne and a Ranger. Being in an elite unit bounded me to a group of men that I still count on today and still call my closest friends. Rangers everywhere feel a internal bound a 'Brotherhood' not many infantry, tankers, hi-tech specialist feel or will ever feel. I suggest you decide what you want to accomplish by "Serving" your country. Then do it. You are either going to make the boat or miss it!

I also was sick to my stomach when four years ago I was watching innocent people being blown apart on buses in Israel. When I started counting the number of Americans killed at 100 I became incensed. I was angry with the American media for taking the side of the murderous terriosts and embracing the killers and justifying their actions. While our nation slept and lifted not one finger to stop it, I and others with the call went to Israel to pitch in where we could to make a difference.

I was motivated to help the Israelis because they where the victims, I choose to support the underdogs in the fight against the NEW Jihad. Most people never understood my passion untill (911) that dreadfull day!

I will tell you that it is not gross to defend and innocent person, it is honorable. If you think war is hell you are wrong. Hell is hell and war is only a means of getting their faster for some and I hope it is the route most Muslim fanatics with the blood of innocense in their eyes will be sent.

MAN-UP and go Ranger/ Special Forces. Or Air Force Pararescue. Go Navy Seal, but dont go for the Social Welfare program some have tried to steer you, at this time in history it should not be about you it should be about the USA about liberty! Instead of the Social Welfare program some have told you go Special Warfare.

It is not to hard to make the cut, in fact I have seen just about every form of man, smart and dumb, fast and slow, strong and weak make the cut into the elite forces, but there was one predicator that examplified every one of them and that was determination. No matter what they stuck it out, and that is all it took for them to when the respect of their superiors and their comrades. Because on a battelfield it is this way, victory goes to those who dare to be bold. You don't want to be stuck in a group of quiters and the undaring. It would be better the inferior in a group of ferocious men, you are safer and wiser there. Go Ranger! Huahh!
