NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.

Wal-Mart, which is the largest seller of firearms in the United States, agreed a 10-point code, which also includes rigid inventory controls, with a bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns led by New York's Michael Bloomberg.

The retailer said it will develop a first-of-its-kind computerized crime gun trace log that will flag purchases by customers who have previously bought guns later recovered in crimes.

"Wal-Mart currently uses a strong point of sale system," said J.P. Suarez, senior vice president and chief compliance officer of Wal-Mart. "This code is a way for us to fine-tune the things we're already doing and further strengthen our standards. We hope other retailers will join us."

The Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership is designed to strengthen the points in the gun purchasing system that criminals have exploited in the past, Wal-Mart and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 46 percent of its criminal gun trafficking investigations involved cases in which someone who is not legally allowed to purchase a firearm does so through the use of a proxy, known as a straw buyer.

i've never bought ay guns there, but I have on several occasions bought them out of 40 ca. s&w ammo, literally. you'd laugh at the responses I've gotten when I've said "I'll take it all, winchester, remington, all of it. I'll sure bet they've filmed me buying a cart load of that shit before.............

Who the hell would buy a gun from Walmart anyway? You want a single shot .22 with a 30" barrel? How about a single shot 20 gauge with a 32" barrel? Maybe a muzzle loader with an 8 foot length of pull and a 9 foot long barrel?

I was young and foolish once....now I'm just foolish. I bought a Savage Mark II .22 bolt action there. They let me buy ammo at the same time (surprising) but I had to be escorted to the front door with the salesperson carrying my gun.

I wonder what would of happened if somebody stole my gun from their hands since I wasn't allowed to carry it out

I got together with a dozen or so friends for a shooting event last year in Birmingham. A bunch of the guys had to fly in, so they had to obey the ten pound ammo limit.. so we all suffled into the local Wal-mart to get satisfactory lead supplies. We bought out the place. I think there was a box of .22 left on the shelf when we were done.

I can only imagine what the poor girl running sporting goods at the time was thinking.

I bought my .22 and ammo at the same time from Dicks, and they did the same thing. Is it some kind of policy when buying a gun and ammo at the same time?

They do the escort bit over at Cabelas even if you don't buy ammunition. Rather silly considering I'm gauranteed to be wearing a loaded firearm at the time.. oh well, that's what lawyers get you..

Actually, up here in Hillbilly country, we don't even have a "super wal mart" so its not that difficult to clean 'em out of ammo. But its always deer season 'round here, people gotta eat ya know..... seriously, right now, turkey and deer. tis the season for neither. reminds me of lots of Appalachian mountain jokes........ (hehe)

The only gun I've ever bought at Wally-World was a Rugger 10/22 with a stainless 22" barrel that was only available from Wallys.

I definatly will not make another firearm purchase there so long as they are cooperating with a$$ crack sludge like Bloomberg.

I really don't like this big brother crap.

Same here when I bought my 10/22. To answer your question, if it were me, I would have shot the thief with my concealed G23. Then likely would've said something smartass to the "escort" like, "good thing you were here".

I just smirked my whole way to the exit thinking about the CHL piece on my hip.

Chinamart is sucking worse than ever!Next stop will be collecting data on ammo purchases.Dunham Sports was doing that, copying down names and drivers license numbers at one point.I think they stopped that nonsense last time I talked to them.Makes me think of Smith and Wesson bending over, also old Bill Ruger when he wouldn't sell high cap mags to civilians!

I belive that I have only been to one wal-mart in the last year that actually had guns, I only buy ammo there if I CAN'T find it elsewhere at a competitive price. I would tather give my busniess to a company or owner that is willing to carry the products(guns) that I want to buy.

they can film and document me all that they want to, practicing my right to bear arms. Its not like they dont know me, already.

I know this is very unprofessional to say this, but "I couldnt give any less of a flying fuck" about it.

Let them do it. I really couldnt care. Hopefully, they arrest gang bangers, and identify the REAL threat to gun owners in america. WHICH ISNT US.

I dont give a crap, Ive nothing to hide. In fact, Im PROUD to show my face and my ID to anyone, when it comes to my guns, and my fodder for them.

Im one of the good guys, here ya go sir!

edit: maybe a way to help us out is to let them go at it WITHOUT changing laws, to play games, and actually GET the bad guys??? why not play tricks? none of us have shit to hide, even if we are offended by it, and its a matter of personal pride??? right?

Walmart is already one of the most worthless companies. Treat their employees like shit, stopped selling guns already in most socialist areas of the country, and their prices are higher than most other places on just about everything (competitive, yes, but still higher than what you'll get if you shop around).

I stopped giving them my money about a year ago. Now I do the unthinkable... Buy hardware at the hardware store, buy groceries at the grocery store, buy car parts at the auto parts store, and buy my non work duds at goodwill (try it sometime, real finds there). All of the places (including goodwill) have much better service, and their employees actually can respect themselves at the end of the day.

Got nothing against big business, but frankly they (like Harley Davidson for example) are not the company they started out being, and I can't find any reason to identify with their brand anymore.

Uh, uh, uh....the cheapest grocery store around here is Food Lion. They sell a gallon of milk $1 more than Walmart. There prices are waaaaay lower than any grocery store around here. Biggest thing I don't like about them is they don't sell clothes in my size unless I go to the girls or boys section.
