For me the 22 mag doesn't really have a advantage untill late in the season after all the leaves have fallen. When the squirrels are on the ground and you may get a some long shots. It does pack more punch for the larger fox squirrels sunning on high tree limbs. But I have never really had a problem sneaking up close enough to make any shot with a 22lr.

The only real reason to get a mag over a lr would be the exstended range it offers if you hunt by sitting in one spot. Like you have trouble getting up and down from sitting to standing.

Getting a Mag will help with distance, but don't waste your money on it, buy a .22 of you liking, comfort and feel, as you will be able to use short and long. Get a Mag only if you hunt deer from afar as in 7mm Mag.
