Opinions on vertical foregrip for S12

Recommended Posts

I'm getting an S12 soon and I think I want a vertical foregrip after it becomes an SBS. But I've not handled an S12 with a foregrip. So if you have one on your gun, please tell about it and perhaps include photos.

What is your barrel length?

What brand/model is the grip?

Pros about having it on your gun.

Cons about having it on your gun.

Does it interfere with switching magazines and what do you do about that? If so, which type of magazine does it interfere with - capacity?

I'm particulary interested in hearing what you think if you have between an 8" and a 12" bbl and also in learning which grips are the most compatible with the S12 and which grips are the most comfortable to hold.

Thanks.

I have a vertical foregrip on my S-12, 19" barrel, and after having shot it quite a bit with and without the foregrip, I am sold on the idea. I was too cheap to buy a good brand of grip so I made my own out of Aluminum Bar stock, it works quite well. I believe that the shot to shot time is better and that recoil recovery between shots is better with the VFG. YMMV. If you use factory 5rnds no loading problems, I had to move the grip forward a little to not be in the way of the APG. I have been toying with buying one of the new SIG PRO light/laser/VFG combos to try out, they look slick.

I've got a stubby VFG on my 19" gun and I love it. I strongly recommend the the stubby, or K-grips, because I think most VFGs are way too big for all but the largest hands. Allows for better control IMO. And gives a place for the light/laser switch. You can see pics of my setup in the "DRUM PORN" thread. I don't use one on my 8" gun cause I like the compactness and simplicity of an SBS, the VFG just seemed to be in the way.

I have one on my S12, which started out as a 19" bbl, and is now 18 1/4" at the end of the Poly Choke, not much different, really. I made my own VFG because I don't like the size of most of them, and I don't like how low they sit by the time a rail is added and then the VFG below that. Mine bolts directly to the handguard in holes I drilled along the bottom, both for mounting the VFG and venting. Mine is approx 3 3/8" from the rear end of the handguard and will clear AGP mags no problem. In fact, when the mag hits the VFG, just rock it up into the magwell.

I like them for short range weapons, as the wrist feels in a more natural position to me. They do seem to give better control over muzzle rise. However, they also seem to increase any muzzle shake you have, or at least give a 100% transfer of that shake, unlike the forearm laying in the hand. So, for longer range, more detailed work, I prefer a regular handguard, or a spot where I can get around the VFG.

If you use regular size VFG you have to move it far enough toss the front so you can rock and lock your magazine in.

Krebs make a short VFG that attached to the side rail instead of under the handguard. If you're planning to install a magwell then you can use any VFG you want.

CORRECTION : It is call KCI forend grip adapter. KCI Grip adapter

I have a VFG on my full-size Tromix S12 and it's extremely controllable under rapid fire. I highly recommend having one. Clearance with 10-round mags is not an issue (just move it forward a little bit if it is) and get a high-quality grip. A cheap, crappy one will not work too well with 12-gauge recoil.

I like VFG's because when I am not resting (which I only do with my Saiga 12 when shooting slugs), I feel more comfortable with vertical grips in both hands.

The first thing to check is that it has a cross bolt perpendicular to the length of the rail. The recoil of the S12 shears off the plastic and aluminum nipples on the "scew up from the bottom types". Those are great $20 toys for .223 AR15's but they will last maybe two rounds with buckshot or slugs if you are lucky.

The second thing is comfortability. I have a push button fold up grip from CAA. It looks cool and is versatile, but if you carry for a long time, the button digs into your hand and makes you wish you just took it off.

I have an aluminum ACE grip, which I like other than the fact that you cannot possibly tighen it so it doesn't wiggle on the rail. I had to get cardboard shims in there to lock it up tight... Even Tony Rumore couldn't tighten the aluminum together enough to keep it from wiggling when he did my conversion. So despite the fact that I do have it on my main shotty, I think you have better options out there for the money.

My favorite that I have played with so far is the KZ TVG. It is well made out of a solid piece of aluminum and is cheap. I know some of the members here hate BOTACH, but I got mine from there when I ordered my Enidine Buffer. There are mixed feelings as far as dealing with Botach so buy at your own risk. My experiences have been fine, but I haven't ever had any issues to resolve with them. http://www.botachtactical.com/kzvefo.html

I bought and installed about 4 different forward grips.

I liked them , but not while actually shooting.

I have not tried the forward grip at an angle, like 45 degrees left that might be nice.

they all just always seemed to get in the way,..

if you watch the video of the Russian AK instructor (on this site somewhere), and try the moves, you won't install a forward grip, unless maybe you intend to be dumping a 20 round 12 gauge drum very fast,..and bnot doing any of the slick moves,..

IMHO.

I have used several of them on my S-12 and like the feel of two grips instead of just one. As mentioned above though, make sure you get one that can handle the recoil, as most seem to be designed for rifles without much recoil. The Russian folding grip was the first one I tried and I like that one very much. It has a sturdy cross bar that can be turned 180 degrees and it slides off. Turning this threaded bar clockwise tightens the grip from the sides, as well as engaging the bar. Just be sure you get it turned with the bar facing the rail. I believe TDI also has one very similar.

I also have one of those Ace aluminum FVGs and I like it a lot. I've had no problem with it coming loose on my Russian tactical forend. The rail on that is actually a very tight fit with the Ace before you even tighten the screw.

The third VFG I tried was the new one from Chaos, a vendor here on our site. This one is very impressive and has a good feel to it, as well as being very well made. I haven't tested it for handling recoil yet on my S-12, because I have the Tromix HG on there now with no rail, but it is very nice on one of my AKs I've used it with.

I prefer the shorter FVG's myself and think the Tango Down is way too long. I've seen a lot of people ruin rails and break tactical railed forends using those with an S-12. They are so long they provide too much leverage if you don't grip them up high when firing. That's why people keep snapping off rails and breaking HGs such as the TDI tactical railed AK HGs. I think the shorter ones like the Ace and the Russian grip make you grip it higher up where you aren't putting so much force on the rail when firing, not to mention longer mags are easier to insert with a shorter grip up front.

Actually, my brother and I both purchased one of these grips. We were likewise dismayed to find that it would rattle even when tightly secured. I tried this on every picatinny rail I had, they all did it. Well, to us that was unacceptable on a weapon so we tried to fix it. We put the top of the grip in a well padded vise and cranked down hard. After a few careful attemps that yielded nothing, we cranked down really hard. That did the trick. My brother managed to slide his back on the host weapon, though it was a bit tight. When I did mine, I must have cranked down a little too much, because it was far too narrow to fit on the rail. Had to work on it quite a bit with a file to get it back on. But my point is, it is possible to tighten those grips up without resorting to shims.

Hello

No VFG for me on my S12's. Tried a few and just decided I preferred them without.

If I had a SBS I might have an entirely different outlook. I have thought about a VFG on my Red Jacket AK-47 pistol, although I know I can't legally do that......I have one of those "potato" flashlight mounts for it, though.....

Actually, I have concluded that I have very little Valley Bitch shit to hang on rails any more. I put a SureFire pressure switch in a Halo side rail cover on one of my S12's, that's about it, other than BUIS mounting on the top rail.

Kind of a "less is more" evolution, I reckon.....

Respectfully posted,

I've never needed one on a long gun, but on the shorty it's essential IMO.

I've shot the 6" Bodyguard, which doesn't have a VFG, and it's a little iffy. In rapid fire it would be really easy to cover the muzzle with your forward hand.

Only the first time... :o

I almost blew a thumb off with an MP5K like that one time, years ago.
