flintnapr 0
I want to take my Saiga .308 20"bbl elk hunting. I can buy 180 grain or 150 grain bullets. I'd prefer the 180 for elk, as long as it is OK to shoot in the Saiga. Whaddayaguys think?
kresk 10,063
Milsurp 147-150gr works better than the heavy stuff.
Makarovnut 0
Milsurp 147-150gr works better than the heavy stuff. For hunting big game animals, only soft point/hollow point expanding bullets should be used. Non-expanding milsurp bullets are likely illegal fodder. As Tritium says lighter bullets are better for the twist of the barrel.
flintnapr 0
thanks for the analysis,-----most commercial hunting .308 is loaded with 150 grain bullet. only one brand had 180 gr. I bet the twist is the reason why.

netpackrat 566
The blue box Federal 180 grain shoots fine in my Saiga.

AK308_in_AK99709 0
Which do you prefer? The Federal or the Winchester? Price not wistanding. Definitely the Federal. I pumped 6 rounds of 150gr into a charging brownie several years back and he kept on coming. Heavier is better when you hunt things that also hunt you. Now when I tramp through the alders I carry a 20-round mag of handloads with the Hornady 208 grain A-Max locked and loaded. If I could find a 220 grain with a spear tip I'd load that too, but all I've found are round nose.

Can't just leave us hanging like that... Obviously you're still here, but a fellow bearanoid Alaskan redneck wants to hear the rest of the story. 8^)
mollysman420 19
I hunt with a 308 vepr and use remington 180gr and white tails drop in their tracks

Now I also carry a .44 Ruger Alaskan.
camosoul77 0
I reload with milsurp powder, and speer 180gr ballistic tips. Not trying very hard, 2" groups at 200yds. My 150gr loads are about 3 inches higher, and 4" wide on that same target. Attribute the increased accuracy of the 180 to, whatever....
slackjaw 0
Can a Ruger MKII 308 shoot the same cheap surplus ammo as the Saiga 308? Stupid question I know, but I want to get a firearm that shoots the same ammo as something I already have (another 762x39 semi auto) or possibly a Saiga 308. IndyArms 10,186
If the rifle is chambered for the cartridge, yes, it can shoot them... I have actually shot delinked Portuguese 308 rounds out of my Savage F/TR target rifle... as a way to get it close after boresighting without using the buck a round factory ammo... needless to say the Portuguese ammo shot very good groups! I was actually pleasantly surprised... I have also shot steel cased Sellier and Bellot out of the Savage as well... doesn't shoot that great... ( not one hole groups) but its good for "plinking" with the gun... when I want to just shoot it... and not spend a fortune doing it. likewise... I shoot steel cased wolf out of my $1200 dollar AR15 setup... just to plink with... not 55 grain moly-coated hollow points which will do one hole groups... but its fun... LOL As long as you DO NOT EXPECT the cheap ammo to shoot as well as the expensive stuff you will have no problems as long as it is the same caliber for which the weapon was designed.
