Ak47 Front Sight Block Compatible with Saiga

Recommended Posts

Can I buy an AK47 front side block with brake threads and bayo lug and replace the stock Saiga FSB?

You have to get the AK-74 FSB. The base with the same press in pins that you have on your current FSB. You can find them on k-var.

I plan on doing the same mod in the future.

What I saw somewhere is that you need a $150 tool to remove/replace the FSB.

Or pay a good gun smith $60 for less than an hours worth of work.

You don't need a press for this. You can do it with a hammer, a punch, and a block of wood.

ETA... some of the newer models have dimples pressed into the sides, instead of standard cross pins. They can be a real bitch to remove. With those you have to drill out the dimples.

on the new ones with dimpels do they still have the pin cuts in the barrel?

Yeah..not to confuse the dimples with the ones in the receiver...

My '06 model x39 with the magwell dimples and extra Y stamp does have the cross pins that hold the GB and FSB on.

I saw a brand new '08 model today at the gun shop with no dimples in the receiver but the GB and FSB are held on with the pressed "dimples" in the sides. One thing interesting about these rifles is they have the same FSB with the holes started for the cross pins, but not drilled or pinned.

I am looking at a 125 mi drive to the nearest AK gunsmith.

So if I order a new Saiga and it has this dimpled FSB, I would be stuck with the stock FSB.

How bad is it to run stock, what are the pit-falls to not having a brake ?

The barrel on my Saiga is not threaded--I don't think stock AK FSB would help unless you can make 14LH threads yourself.

On the other hand, the recoil on Saiga is nowhere near big guns shooting 7.62x54R--it's a pleasure to shoot "as is" compared to PSL-54C or (gosh!) Mosins ;)

Or you can carefully cut off the shroud with a Dremel cutting wheel and thread the barrel like my son did for me.

However, I had to cut the back end off a cheap bird cage flash suppressor for an AK to make a jam nut (not seen in this image). Without that it wants to come off.

Hello

I just replaced the FSB on my "dimpled 'n Y'd" .39 with the k-var AK-74 and just like Dinzag suggested, it pinned right on like it was made for it. Holes lined right up.

Did you get a threaded FSB or just a regular one...?

I just completed the install of a 74 FSB on one of those dimple-welded Saigas (an 09). I drilled out the dimples and beat the old FSB off with a hammer. I then drilled pin channels in the barrel for the new 74-style FSB and pinned it on. It turned out great, but if you dont have the tools or patience to line everything up properly - it would be 100 times easier to just cut the factory FSB sleeve back and thread the barrel.

I've wondered about getting down to the barrel on my Saiga .223 and just threading it for pipe thread and putting a customized pipe joint on there for a muzzle flash supressor. Just drill some holes in the pipe connector, do a little dremel work making slots, and you should have it. Just thread regular pipe threads. Would that work?

I don't know--don't see why not if you could find a muzzle-brake/hider to fit it.

I used a $10 pipe-cutter at Lowe's to get my barrel shroud off. It wasn't easy--I have three blisters on my right thumb from trying to constantly tighten the pipe-cutter while turning it around and around the shroud. In the end, it came out great, though I will need a little re-blueing touchup (no idea how much that's going to cost me at a gunshop). I've seen rental threading kits as low as $20 shipped, but I went with Dinzag (and I'm glad I did--this threader looks great...let's just hope I can keep it that way). Hopefully, tomorrow morning I'm going to thread the barrel and do the bullet guide install.
