cutting the barrel

Recommended Posts

If a guy wants a saiga12ga, nothing special, but with a 19" cylinder bore barrel to allow use of slugs potentially (ouch, he knows!);

and what's available is a 22" full choke only:

can the guy cut the bbl to 19" and:

1. will it still have enough gas pressure to cycle the action reliably?

and,

2. How far back does the constriction to full choke start? i.e. if it begins more than 4 inches back, then it cannot be cut since it would then be less than 18".

Not interested in applying for a short-bbl NFA, so not going to cut less than 18.5inches no matter what.

Thanks,

C-

remember when you cut your bbl to put a 3" shell in there and measure from the front of it down the barrel. dont make the mistake of going by the outside dimensions...I was taught that the chamber isnt considered part of the barrel when considering for length, though i have been known to overdo it with precautions like that from time to time. pretty sure its only the bore part of the barrel thats counted

I have a 19in. threaded barrel model S-12...Im pretty sure that the 22in. uses exactly the same porting and parts as the 19in. so cycling should be no problem in a shortened 22in barrel...you will probably be best off having the barrel threaded for chokes after you trim the length to where you want it , so you can shoot whatever ammo you like thru it...and the choked section of the barrel is in the last inch of barrel length , so it will be removed when you shorten the barrel..
