Sabot jackets

Recommended Posts

anybody know where i can find 12 gauge sabot components? i reload and i recently bought a sabot mould at a yardsale, but i cant find sabot jackets anywhere other than for black powder...any ideas? right now im going the half-assed approach and using regular wads with a paper wrap, and its affecting the accuracy of the rounds im making....

Ballistic Products <sp?> (I think they advertize on the Web (that is, if you can spell (unlike me!)) would be the best place to check for that kind of stuff, they specialize in everything shotgun.

Has slugs and sabots.

What kind of mold did you get? The Lee and Lyman sabot slug molds use regular wads to load them.

If you have a Lee mold you can get data here.

The data for the Lyman slug in 12ga is in the Lyman shotshell reloding manual #4.

I think i might be using a 20 gauge sabot mould here. Im not sure exactly what brand this mould is, but the guy i bought it from did say he used it in 12 gauge reloads for sabots. Im thinking maybe a cut 20 gauge wad inside the 12 gauge wad might be the way to go here, so i guess ill try that out next. the method im using now is way too time consuming. Ill have to take a picture of what these things are doing to the trees im shooting them at to test them out with, because its quite different than a regular shotgun slug. they are passing completely through an 8 inch tree trunk from 30 yards. I just need to get them jacketed better so they dont keyhole downrange. Ill have to mic a slug out and see exactly what gauge this mould is making...I'm thinking now that its got to be either a musket bullet or a 20 gauge sabot based on those links J A. A regular 12 gauge wad is not enough to jacket the bullet snugly in the hull or the barrel, and I REALLY dont want to make the jacketing too snug. Thanks for the help guys, if I come up with a solid load, and can get it to work properly in semi autos I will share it with you all. Right now Im firing it out of one of my pump actions, and it sure the heck SEEMS like its actually got more recoil than 3" slugs and buckshot loads. Any other ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
