Tokageko 8 Posted January 16, 2005 Report Share Posted January 16, 2005 (edited) Since no one else has jumped to your rescue on this, I've taken it upon myself to refresh my memory on the topic of pistols built from rifle parts. In order to avoid illegaly making an NFA weapon, you will have to replace the forward pistol grip with another (non-pistol-grip) forearm. Also important, you must NOT use a receiver from a disassembled rifle. If you were to do so, you would be (in the eyes of the law) "making a pistol from a rifle". If you use a new reciever though, that was never part of a rifle, it will be legal. As long as it does not have a buttstock, fixed or folding, you should be fine. As far as I can tell, there is no limit to barrel length, or overall length for the pistol. In order to be on the safe side, I would use fewer than ten imported parts, though I'm not actually sure it would be illegal to make a pistol from imported parts, as all of the discussion I've seen (and the laws I've read) have been about rifles and shotguns exclusively. Either way, I'd "geuss" that an AK pistol would not be importable, primarily because it uses mainly AK parts. Note: I am near positive that you were planning on using fewer than ten imported parts anyway, so feel free to disregard this last paragraph. Reading further, I have discovered that it is legal to have more than one grip on a pistol, as long as the second grip is straight rather than slanted. So, theoretically you could use a forearm with a rail on the bottom and attach a straight grip there, if your heart so desires. IF you have a pistol... chances are you will need to CONFORM to STATE REGS as far as posession of a pistol. Whether you have made it or not... I know where I live in NY... If you own a pistol, it must be REGISTERED to you, and you must have a valid pistol permit.... otherwise you are in violation of state laws. regardless of anything else.... The link he posted shows dozens of pics from guys who did great builds and posted very detailed instructions. They have also beat the legal issues to death over there. As well as listed all kinds of links to parts supliers. In Pennsylvania I would have to have a set of "handgun" serial numbers assigned to the AMD. Also you will have to permanantly seal the rear of the reciever so that no buttstock may ever be attached. Other than that, I think you've got it all covered. Good luck! You will probably be finished way before I am. I would also like to see lots of pics! Ever consider taking pics along the way during the build?
