Theres really not much you can do wrong opening it up to clean.

Unscrew the gas knob in the front of the gas tube and a "puck" will be inside there. If its stuck, just take a dowel from the back side and pop it out the front.

Clean the inside good and the puck, and take a dental pick to clean the port holes.

When your finished, the puck should rattle some as it moves.

The nice part about these Saigas is how easy they are to break down.

This is a good request - I second it. Maybe the next time one of you guys does a tear down on a S12 you can record that and the reassembly? That would be a win for the community.

Can I third it?

New to the forum here and I just purchased my s-12 today! I'm so excited. I've read the manual and I'm getting my first chance to fire it next Sat. 22nd.

I want to keep it clean but I'm skeptical about taking it apart to clean it for fear I won't get it back together again

  • 1 month later...

I have an interest in this thread myself. I have been a member here for a few years, and FINALLY broke down and bought a Saiga 12. I have shot mine a few times with low brass stuff and had some issues with cycling FTE, ect on #@2 setting. Originally, I was using the search feature looking for threads about the 2 gas port issue compared to having 4 gas ports. It seems that 4 ports are better than two, and may be the culprit for my problem. I was looking for a thread to tell me how to verify if my gun has 2 or 4 ports. I have stripped my gun down, but not that far yet as I myself have been worried about messing it up.

Since the Saiga/AK action is one of the easiest firearms in the world to field strip, it makes one wonder why anybody who can't do a 30 second job should own one.

Not tryin' to be a jerk, just sayin'...
