I patterned some of it at the range and I wasn't real impressed with it's 25yd performance but 7yds or less you should be fine. Winchester 3" buckshot with 5 "000" would be a better choice though. Birdshot out of a .410 will only piss off a bad guy. I've had great success with my handloaded buckshot rounds. Mine keep a tight pattern to 25yds. And 5 hits are better than one.
