All:

I'm about to sell my 11-87P and transition entirely to my converted Saiga-12s for home defense and "tactical" (god I hate that word) use. Anybody figure out a good mag pouch that will fit the Saiga 5-round mags? I need something that will attach to a MOLLE-type chest rig, which leaves out most of the Commie-issue gear, AFAIK. Would a pouch designed for a FAL or G3 mag work? Suggestions are welcome.

I am looking also. I think a RPK 4 mag pouch is all that folks around here have found.

I searched this entire forum. And asked similar questions. No one replied. I think everyone gave up on 8rds in vest. But 5 rounds are supposed to fit in a m14 pouch. but they stick out top. Kind of like a open top "match" like pouch.

Mickporno:
Thanks! Looking forward to the pics.

The article in the current SWAT magazine mentions that two 5-rounders will fit sideways in the USGI 3-mag M16 pouch, but I'd rather go with several single mag pouches to keep things closer to the chest and keep the setup more like what I use for carbine and SMG mags.

I'm betting a FAL single-mag pouch from Tac Tailor would work fine; it's open-top with a shock cord to retain the mag.

I don't have any 8-rounders, so that's not an issue right now. Hell, I'd settle for being able to find more 5-rounders!

I've used the belt holders (israeli) that hold 2 double stack 308. 2 mags fit in tightly. I use 8 rounders, so they hang out the top. I can't speak the the length of the 5 round mag.

I bought a Russian (UN) assult vest from Rusmilitary 5 rd mags fit well the Russian mag pouches on the vest have elastic so the mags fit snug the 8 rounders fit but stick out a bit but the elastic holds them snuggly. I think you can see an 8 rd mag in my assult vest. Like I said it fits very snuggly. I'm really happy with the vest the only thing is that my Model 1911 .45 is just a little too big for the holster

If you're talking HD, you can get 5 rounder into a butt-stock magpouch. That could theoretically give you 21 rounds on the gun (two clamped 8s in the magwell, and one 5 in the buttstock).

If you haven't won after that...well, you should probably try to find some dignified way to check out.

Thanks for the contributions, everyone!

Interestingly, I found that the Spectergear M1 Mk1 chest rig I use with my ARs and SMGs will also fit Saiga mags. :super: The mag pouches normally only hold 1 AR mag or 2 SMG mags, but the older model features elastic compression straps that can be expanded to accommodate 2 AR mags or 1 Saiga mag per pouch (I hear the mag pouches are tighter in the newer models).

This idea is exactly what I'm looking for. I've been on the hunt for a buttstock mag pouch for a while, need somthing that will snug the factory 5rnd mag up agienst my ATI fiberforce Dragunov stock. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

thanks

Google TACO pouches from HSGI. They list fitting S12 mags on their site. I don't own any yet, so I'm only recommending based on a bunch of research and visual quality. Take that for what it's worth. S12 owners just don't have a lot of choices to work with.

TACOs aren't cheap, but if you want a secure open-top pouch for just about any mag, these are worth a look. They have an adjustable bungie strap on top (you can easily tighten for 5rdrs) and an elastic band around the body of the pouch to hold the mag more firmly in place. Material and sewing looks to be good quality, again better than what I've seen on other products.

There is also a complaint about some difficulty fitting these pouches onto a MOLLE vest/belt. I guess they fit pretty tight, which may be worth the hassle if it's more secure. The site has a bunch of videos on use and mounting. Again, opinions vary.

Not everyone likes open-top pouches, fearing that the mags will fall out when you go prone. I've used open-tops for AR classes w/ no problem. I'm going to be ordering a few of the TACOs for my 10rd AGPs soon and will review for the gear section.

I purchased some used nylon M16 dbl mag pouches w/ molle backs (ACU & Desert 3 color Molle II) for about $2.50 each off of Ebay. One five round mag fits perfectly and the elastic band that goes across the middle holds the mag in place.

Also a pouch that works for 8 round mags made by Semper Paratus Tactical in Puyallup, WA. He originally made these for AK 40 rnd mags.

Then I'll keep bumping it...MUHAHAHAHA!!!

I just found these on midway http://www.midwayusa...ctNumber=917826 anyone have exp with these Ready-Fire pouches? I'de think the smallest one would be good for saiga 5rnd mags but I like the way the "shotgun" pouch opens lengthwise (better protection from the elements)

I know there are a few surplus products (for other mags that "kinda" work), and only a handful of companies that make pouches for the 8 and 10rndrs (I know u only asked about 5's). There are, of course, pouches offered by business members, but neither fits my needs. Been searching the forum for a long time with limited luck.

So, I've been emailing a few companies that look like, or I know, have good products to see what they'd charge for a 10rd open-top pouch. A multiple-mag pouch would be ideal, of course. Ideally, I'm looking for something that's MOLLE-compatible with a bungee top and/or a solid retaining band. Multiple color choices might be pushing my luck.

To start a condensed list, here are the companies I've just emailed. They don't have S12 pouches listed, and some of you had success, so I figured I'd ask them and report back. I don't think I can cite prices b/c of the rules, so I'll respond with a Y/N if they get back to me and you can contact on your own:

Semper Paratus Tactical
Fox Outdoor Products
Coyote Tactical
CONDOR
Spec-Ops

Any others that people have had luck with or been denied?

Oh, yeah. My factory 5 fits great in my G3/CETME pouches. They close very well, were cheap, good quality, but are ALICE. Seems any pouch for a .308 20-rounder works.

_________________________________________

Thats one of the funniest things Ive read on this forum, actually. Well, the CPR was successful...

After several years of frustration over the lack of S12 gear, I remembered my dad saying, You are either part of the solution, or you are part of the problem. I know he wasnt the first to say it, but it has always stayed with me as a profound life lesson.

So, I bit the proverbial bullet. I looked thru and contacted a pant load of gear sellers and makers, big and small, asking for real S12 mag pouches that are MOLLE-compatible. No more of, Well, itll fit if you hack it up and use enough duct tape.

Dont cry if this is too long to read (you know who you are); I tried to put in as much info as possible for people to make their own decisions.

And, for those of you who havent taken your meds today, my attorney advises me to disclose that I have no connections to any of these companies. This is only information and my armchair perceptions of quality and service. Im buying a couple and will review, but havent touched any of these as of this writing. So, caveat emptor, bitches!

(Those in Blue are new additions.)

_______________________________________

A. Companies already making pouches specifically for the S12 or known to fit:

1. Kydex pouches: BladeTech, Solar Tactical, & Caleb. Basically, you can have any one of these for $50, or a new mag and several boxes of ammo. You be the judge.

2. High Speed Gear: TACO pouches fit any large mag you own. +1 for versatility. US-made. Look like good quality. Mixed reviews on ease of MOLLE mounting from difficult to stop whining.. Mid-priced.

3. Kalinka: Another member pointed these out. Look pretty decent, but don't think they'd fit the 10-rds, just the 8's? They're described as "uniclicks." Implies to me that they don't have an velcro flap, which might expand for larger mags. Anybody have one for comment? Good prices. They have a nice selection of pouches for .410 and 20's, too.

4. The Vest Guy: Was a long-term Business Member, until recently (?). Found good reviews on several forums. Multiple pouches designed for S12s. Big points for that. However, also seem very pricey to me.

5. R&R Targets : Mag clip for belt, not a pouch: Inexpensive. Quick. Seems best for race-guns. Maybe good for a grab-and-go in HD.

6. Cavalry Arms: Has a fair-looking 2-shingle pouch for the S12 with a tuckable flap for decent money. US-Made. MALICE straps for MOLLE attachment.

7. Rusmilitary: I only saw closed-top pouches for 8-rders listed. They looked pretty basic, but very inexpensive. Probably more $ to ship them from the UK than for the pouch. Found other similar gear in US that fit 10s.

8. Surplus 40-rd RPK-type pouches: Had to throw in these, even though they have a cover. A cheap, rugged and utilitarian man purse for the budget-minded zombie hunter on the go.

9. Survival Corps:(Not sure if this is the best method, but I'll just paste TX-Zen's post into the list) "I recently bought SURPAT SVD pouches from Survival Corps in Russia, shipping wasn't cheap but the pouches are so it balanced out. They are a joint US-Russian venture oriented around the SURPAT camo pattern and associated gear, the quality of the pouches I have is nice." (Note: for 8-rd mags. Colors: Black, Olive, ACU, MARPAT, MULTICAM, Woodland)

_______________________________________

B. Here are the results for the companies I contacted. I omitted the pricing and websites, due to the rules (no links to or prices of non-business members, am I right?). So, youll have to Google them or email me for that if youre interested. I didnt list all of the companies who never even responded. That was a long list. So:

1. CONDOR: Made in USA Line = not all products. Made 2 inquiries. Received a will pass along to our R&D response. I sent back some mag dimensions, but nothing from them after 2+ months. Will update.

2. Coyote Tactical: (David Bosen) US-made. VERY nice to deal with and quick response. BEST pick for communication and options. Good review from another forum member. Just posted several pics of the S12 pouches on his website. THREE retention styles offered: tuckable flap; bungee; or, elastic retention. Fits 5, 8 and 10 rd mags. Very inexpensive for the materials and visual quality. I liked Davids willingness to solve the problem, and he offered a quality product, so I ordered a double-shingle (2 mag) pouch as soon as he made one up. Will review when I get it. A lot of colors are available: OD, Ranger Green, Coyote Brown, Coyote Tan, Multicam, Black, ACU, Navy blue.

Tried to make an S12 version of his pouch with kydex retention inserts, but couldn't make a one that worked due to the flared base of our mags. Another maker had the same issue. I had asked everyone for a rounds-up pouch based on my forum research, and personal failures from rounds-down mag changes disloging the first round. I'm sure opinions vary.

3. Emdom: Mixed US and oversees maker. Sent them dimensions >2 months ago. Still waiting to hear back. Too bad for us. I really liked the features of their Immediate Access Pouch (IAP). It doesnt have a bungee, but claims not to need one for good retention b/c of the strap around the body, a rubberized friction pad and an extra layer of foam. Also has Multi-level mounting using different sized MALICE straps. Means we might have been able to mount an S12 mag version lower on a belt for better extraction of our taller mags. I dont know how theyre any different from other MOLLE gear in this regard. Maybe others can, too. Decent prices.

4. EssTac: (Stuart) Immediate response and showed a lot of willingness to build for us. Great guy to work with. After I asked what he could make, he actually ordered a mag from the forum store and made a prototype. Hasnt gotten back to me yet with a finished product, but I will update if/when he does.

Side note for 5-round pouches: EssTac does have a decent-looking setup for 7.62 x51 & x39 mags which is definitely another open-top solution for s12 5rd-ers, anyway. U can find these as single and multiple shingles. Good prices.

5. Fox Outdoor Products: US-based importer. No response. No sale.

6. Semper Paratus Tactical: US-made. Cant do custom work right now due to backlog. Good problem to have, I guess. Quick and friendly response on email, though.

7. Spec-Ops: US-made. Quick reply, but only will pass onto our R&D.

8. Tactical Tailor: (Valerie) US-made. Quick response. Single, double or whatever you want. Custom-made, so no pics of a prototype, even though I asked, which shaves some points. Others on forum have been happy, though. Just sent me dimensions. S12 pouch is 6 tall by 3 ½ wide and ½ deep. Supposedly looks like a taller version of their Single 7.62 mag pouch. Bungee around outside of pouch for retention instead of elastic strap. MALICE straps. Color choices: Multicam, coyote brown, od, black, foliage green and ranger green. Decent price.

______________________________________________

So, thats what I was able to come up with so far. Have at it. Feel free to contact others, report back and add them. Do the same if I missed any existing products. Actual reviews and pics would be ideal.

Mods, would you rather have this in the review section?

I have a question, as far as home defense goes, do you plan on just walking around your house all of the time with your vest on? If not, then when are you going to find the time to suit up Rambo style during a home defense situation?

Not bashing, just sitting here in awe at the guys who would grab their S-12, suit up in a tacti-cool vest, and start fighting off intruders. That's pretty awesome! Me, I'm just lazy, if someone breaks in, I just grab the Colt and shoot 'em...

I agree, but I actually didn't see anyone mention using these pouches for HD. Certainly not my purpose, anyway.

If you ever take a training course or compete, as a lot of people here do, you're going to quickly find that stuffing an extra mag in each of your back pockets isn't going to cut it. Now try moving 5 ft. Good luck with that.

I'm not a fan of the full vest, either, but not going to insult anyone who does - for courses, competition, or if you get shot at for a living, that is. If you wear one to the range for no apparent reason, I will point and laugh.

When I take a class, though, I use a simple MOLLE belt with enough pouches for the course. It doesn't have any grenade pouches, armor plates, or breaching axes, only what I need. And, I need to carry more than the mag in my weapon for "these" activities. That's all.

It pretty much takes all of 3 seconds to don a vest. I can't stand those 'SWAT' fleamarket style vests with the crossdraw holster and whatever... but I have an interceptor with plates that's always beside my S12. If I have the slightest feeling someone might think about shooting at me then taking those three seconds to don that vest is a no brainer.
