Mag pouches for Saiga-12?

Recommended Posts

All:

I'm about to sell my 11-87P and transition entirely to my converted Saiga-12s for home defense and "tactical" (god I hate that word) use. Anybody figure out a good mag pouch that will fit the Saiga 5-round mags? I need something that will attach to a MOLLE-type chest rig, which leaves out most of the Commie-issue gear, AFAIK. Would a pouch designed for a FAL or G3 mag work? Suggestions are welcome.

I am looking also. I think a RPK 4 mag pouch is all that folks around here have found.

I searched this entire forum. And asked similar questions. No one replied. I think everyone gave up on 8rds in vest. But 5 rounds are supposed to fit in a m14 pouch. but they stick out top. Kind of like a open top "match" like pouch.

i use a pouch designed for m14 mags which holds 6 - 5 round mags and has alice clips on the back....after i get home tonite i'll take some pics of it and post to this thread.

for the 8 rounders i use a "tactical" style vest which holds 4 - 8 rounders very nicely across my belly.....

Mickporno:

Thanks! Looking forward to the pics.

The article in the current SWAT magazine mentions that two 5-rounders will fit sideways in the USGI 3-mag M16 pouch, but I'd rather go with several single mag pouches to keep things closer to the chest and keep the setup more like what I use for carbine and SMG mags.

I'm betting a FAL single-mag pouch from Tac Tailor would work fine; it's open-top with a shock cord to retain the mag.

I don't have any 8-rounders, so that's not an issue right now. Hell, I'd settle for being able to find more 5-rounders!

I bought a Russian (UN) assult vest from Rusmilitary 5 rd mags fit well the Russian mag pouches on the vest have elastic so the mags fit snug the 8 rounders fit but stick out a bit but the elastic holds them snuggly. I think you can see an 8 rd mag in my assult vest. Like I said it fits very snuggly. I'm really happy with the vest the only thing is that my Model 1911 .45 is just a little too big for the holster

Thanks for the contributions, everyone!

Interestingly, I found that the Spectergear M1 Mk1 chest rig I use with my ARs and SMGs will also fit Saiga mags. :super: The mag pouches normally only hold 1 AR mag or 2 SMG mags, but the older model features elastic compression straps that can be expanded to accommodate 2 AR mags or 1 Saiga mag per pouch (I hear the mag pouches are tighter in the newer models).

ForGreatJustice - who makes a buttstock mag pouch that will fit on a Saiga?

If you're talking HD, you can get 5 rounder into a butt-stock magpouch. That could theoretically give you 21 rounds on the gun (two clamped 8s in the magwell, and one 5 in the buttstock).

If you haven't won after that...well, you should probably try to find some dignified way to check out.

This idea is exactly what I'm looking for. I've been on the hunt for a buttstock mag pouch for a while, need somthing that will snug the factory 5rnd mag up agienst my ATI fiberforce Dragunov stock. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

thanks

Google TACO pouches from HSGI. They list fitting S12 mags on their site. I don't own any yet, so I'm only recommending based on a bunch of research and visual quality. Take that for what it's worth. S12 owners just don't have a lot of choices to work with.

TACOs aren't cheap, but if you want a secure open-top pouch for just about any mag, these are worth a look. They have an adjustable bungie strap on top (you can easily tighten for 5rdrs) and an elastic band around the body of the pouch to hold the mag more firmly in place. Material and sewing looks to be good quality, again better than what I've seen on other products.

There is also a complaint about some difficulty fitting these pouches onto a MOLLE vest/belt. I guess they fit pretty tight, which may be worth the hassle if it's more secure. The site has a bunch of videos on use and mounting. Again, opinions vary.

Not everyone likes open-top pouches, fearing that the mags will fall out when you go prone. I've used open-tops for AR classes w/ no problem. I'm going to be ordering a few of the TACOs for my 10rd AGPs soon and will review for the gear section.

I purchased some used nylon M16 dbl mag pouches w/ molle backs (ACU & Desert 3 color Molle II) for about $2.50 each off of Ebay. One five round mag fits perfectly and the elastic band that goes across the middle holds the mag in place.

Also a pouch that works for 8 round mags made by Semper Paratus Tactical in Puyallup, WA. He originally made these for AK 40 rnd mags.

Holy necrothread....It is a good one to bring back, but I bet this takes the cake at over 6 years.

Heh, I didn't even notice. Didnt want to start a new thread just for buttstock mag pouches if it was already mentioned somewhere else; found it through the search: Bing!

I know there are a few surplus products (for other mags that "kinda" work), and only a handful of companies that make pouches for the 8 and 10rndrs (I know u only asked about 5's). There are, of course, pouches offered by business members, but neither fits my needs. Been searching the forum for a long time with limited luck.

So, I've been emailing a few companies that look like, or I know, have good products to see what they'd charge for a 10rd open-top pouch. A multiple-mag pouch would be ideal, of course. Ideally, I'm looking for something that's MOLLE-compatible with a bungee top and/or a solid retaining band. Multiple color choices might be pushing my luck.

To start a condensed list, here are the companies I've just emailed. They don't have S12 pouches listed, and some of you had success, so I figured I'd ask them and report back. I don't think I can cite prices b/c of the rules, so I'll respond with a Y/N if they get back to me and you can contact on your own:

Semper Paratus Tactical

Fox Outdoor Products

Coyote Tactical

CONDOR

Spec-Ops

Any others that people have had luck with or been denied?

I have a question, as far as home defense goes, do you plan on just walking around your house all of the time with your vest on? If not, then when are you going to find the time to suit up Rambo style during a home defense situation?

Not bashing, just sitting here in awe at the guys who would grab their S-12, suit up in a tacti-cool vest, and start fighting off intruders. That's pretty awesome! Me, I'm just lazy, if someone breaks in, I just grab the Colt and shoot 'em...

I agree, but I actually didn't see anyone mention using these pouches for HD. Certainly not my purpose, anyway.

If you ever take a training course or compete, as a lot of people here do, you're going to quickly find that stuffing an extra mag in each of your back pockets isn't going to cut it. Now try moving 5 ft. Good luck with that.

I'm not a fan of the full vest, either, but not going to insult anyone who does - for courses, competition, or if you get shot at for a living, that is. If you wear one to the range for no apparent reason, I will point and laugh.

When I take a class, though, I use a simple MOLLE belt with enough pouches for the course. It doesn't have any grenade pouches, armor plates, or breaching axes, only what I need. And, I need to carry more than the mag in my weapon for "these" activities. That's all.

It pretty much takes all of 3 seconds to don a vest. I can't stand those 'SWAT' fleamarket style vests with the crossdraw holster and whatever... but I have an interceptor with plates that's always beside my S12. If I have the slightest feeling someone might think about shooting at me then taking those three seconds to don that vest is a no brainer.

SPLAV also makes pouches for S12 mags, you can find these at Kalinka or RusMilitary.

I recently bought SURPAT SVD pouches from Survival Corps in Russia, shipping wasn't cheap but the pouches are so it balanced out. They are a joint US-Russian venture oriented around the SURPAT camo pattern and associated gear, the quality of the pouches I have is nice.
