Phase II Complete Of Saiga Conversion

Recommended Posts

Got all the furniture cleaned off and refinished.

Soaked all the old Romanian wood in liberal coats of paint stripper, then scrapped off the Commie varnish.

Did this twice until I could see wood.

Then scrubbed all off with a coarse plastic pad and water to get rid of the stripper.

Let this dry for a couple of days.

Started my final sanding.

Shapped the lower handguard the way I wanted it.

Copied the shape from a lower that I like.

Finish sanded all the old finish off the upper handguard down to wood.

Ditto with the rear stock.

Final sanding with 100 grit.

Washed it all down with acetone on a rag to get rid of oils, etc.

Stained all the wood with Varithane Gel Stain, Ipswitch Pine (tested it on the pistol grip--looked good).

Brushed a coat of Varithane Diamond Finish, matt.

Let this dry hard and then lightly scuffed off the Varithane with steel wool.

Three more coats and steel wool.

Am going for the old school "terror" look.

See the second attached photo (from a famous builder) for what I am shooting for.

Did not want that glossy finish as in the third photo with gun case.

Your progress is coming along quite well. You should be very proud. Once you have it completed you will have trouble convincing people it's a Saiga.

Good luck,

Merritt

Sometimes the hallmark of good work is doing it well enough that no one notices.
