njhockey 0
Well I just picked up a 19" threaded barrel Saiga 12 and I'm already loving it. I really would like to convert it so I could put on some nice AK wood furniture, however, I don't know if I'll have all the tools necessary and a adequate workspace. I don't own a vice or c-clamps, but do have a power drill, dremel, hammer, and punches already. Does anybody have experience converting their S12 on a makeshift workbench (student desk in my case)? I'm no expert, but think that I can pull it off with a good step by step picture guide, many of which I've found on these great forums. I would be open to sending it off or finding someone to convert it as well, if anyone know of a shop or person in Central Missouri who could work on it if need be? Also, I'm looking at adding a side rail mount with reflex sight and a vertical foregrip of some type, but I'm not sure what the best way to go about mounting the foregrip. I don't really like the tri-rail's, and would prefer a simple single rail under the hand guard. I've seen the TAPCO rail peices which can be mounted to their Galil style hand guards, but they don't look like they'd be very stable. Any experience with this system or a similar rail setup would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, njhockey
zone1935 5
I did my s-12 and .223 on an old desk. You can do it if you take your time. The one thing you will need to find is a very good and stable place to be able to knock out the ground off rivets. Here is the first conversion guide I used. http://www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/ It is for a rifle but alot of the principals are the same. If you are looking for a "true" AK look check out Dinzag's site. He also has links to some cool furniture options. Cobra customs also have some cool ideas. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=31210 and http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=32246

The HG with the single rail that Cobra makes is exactly what I'm looking for, I'll definitely be ordering one of them.
chucku 0
You can do it with those tools. A c clamp would only set you back a couple bucks at a dollar store though. Its easy.
