well guys, i was going to buy a Toyota or a Honda, recent events on how bad things are getting and Ford and GM have actually improved quality and reliability, I may actually help one out and buy a car, but who to buy from? I've eliminated Chrysler for many reasons I won't discuss (former owner) currently ford and chevy cars have been claimed to be on the same page as honda and toyota now...what do you guys think?

Not as clear cut as many want to make it. Toyota , Honda and others have plants in the US are those workers less american than those that work for GM or ford? GM in effect was just nationalized since the government is now the major shareholder.

I think i'm going to stick to what i was saying befor this mess and the next vehicle i'll buy will be a 70s pickup i'll have shipped up, throw in a crate engine and do some work and be happy.

The things they rate vehicles by i just don't care about. I want something simple i can fix myself without going to a dealer to be raped. I don't need AC, I don't want a automatic, I don't really even care if i have cruise. I've had power windows fail on me too many times to care for them even. And you can keep your airbags.

I'm sorry this dosn't help your choice but i guess i'm not the person to ask.

so its all about you

No, I realize not everyone wants to work on thier vehicles, and maybe some people don't mind going to dealers. If comfort wasn't important to our society we wouldn't push the issue with so many products. Everyone has to make thier own choices based upon thier needs. I simply stated my opinion, and in the same post admitted it was worthless as to the OPs question.

My advice: if you're buying a car, take your pick, but if you're buying a truck, go Ford. Ford has the best trucks right now, bar none. My father recently bought a new truck. We compared Ford, GM, and Dodge. There was no comparison. The Fords were heavier duty. The F-250 is actually the same truck as the F-350. The only difference is the F-350 has an extra leaf spring in the suspension. They otherwise have the same engine, frame, transmission, and other components. Effectively, Ford's 3/4 ton model is actually a 1-ton in disguise.

+1 I'd rather restore an old 1 ton 4x4 than buy a brand new one even if the old one cost me more cash out of pocket up front.

I am doing my best to not buy another new thing that isn't gun related unless it's locally produced...support your local economy first

I own 2 fords, owned 1 84 escort as my first car. So far all 3 have proven to be DAMN TOUGH! 2003 that runs mid 10s on a stock long block and transmission.

My trouble experiences with fords:

- My '98 GT mustang had a trashed T45 but really I feel that was caused by the kid that liked to power shift using a spec clutch and all stock clutch cable components.

- My '03 Throw out bearing started chirping. I upgraded and haven't had any problems and it has hundreds of drag strip passes on it.

- My '94 Ranger MD05 gearbox got really hard to put into gear, but it was obviously abused. Someone put redline fluid in it, rear seal was leaking. I got a rebuilt replacement for $350 and put it in myself 2 years ago and drive the hell out of it still!

My '87 Monte Carlo was a good car, but I felt like it kind of crumbled more than the fords did. Also it was a PITA to work on. Strange sharp things would bite me and tear up my hands/arms. My friends FWD Regal does the same thing to me. It damn near cut through my fingernail up at the skin. Uncomfortable.

My '70 Monte Carlo was one tough car and pleasant to drive for being a "classic". It overheated and cracked a head gasket so I sold it off to a fellow enthusiast that wanted to fix it up.

Hope that helps.

Always been a big fan of Toyota trucks, when I was growing up we had a 77 Toyota 4 banger that was abused and run into the ground, but wouldn't die.

With that said, Brair is correct. A while ago the Toyota V8's that come in the Tundra were having issues with the cam shafts snapping in half. I don't know what the cause was, but there was talks of a massive engine recall.

I'd say steer away from Toyota, or at least read up on some of the issues they've been having lately.

Both Toyota and Honda are very reliable low maintenance vehicles .They have far fewer problems, easy to maintain good warranties.Hyundai has the best warranty if you spend an extra 1k it goes to 10 years 100k bumper to bumper not just powertrain.I wish the American vehicles were as durable and dependable as the Japanese and S.korean vehicles. The big three have started to get better but it may be too late.As things are now and working on vehicles for a living I would not purchase an American vehicle over a slightly higher priced Japanese vehicle. Most domestic cars are ready for the scrapyard retirement home by 100k miles.

Hmmmm in the diesel department Dodge has them beat, Ford and GM bigwigs just dont get it, real diesles have 6 cylinders. Actually, a 94-97 12 valve Dodge Cummins with standard tranny is hard to beat, all mechanical engine that doesent turn to fast.

I actually have been studying the fate of the auto companies for quite some time now, and while I could make a projection that seems spot-on today, it could totally change come tomorrow: it's that volatile right now.

As far as "the best truck for America" is concerned, I have only ever owned one truck. A V8-powered Chevy El Camino. It served every need I had and in my own personal opinion is the most truck the average American needs to own. It's such a brilliant vehicle, and a design philosophy that the American manufacturers should never have walked away from; with modern technology that they have available they could build one helluva ElCo/Ranchero! As proof of my opinion, note that in the Australian market (the place MOST like America in terms of terrain, taste, and needs,) trucks like this are still produced by GM & Ford.

A car is all dependent on what your needs are. Personally, I need a truck, with a bed large enough to hold a full-sized motorcycle. Unfortunately, all the new trucks on the market are just way too big; I don't need anything with a giant body and wheels, which seems to be the same across all manufacturer's right now. Actually, there's no way I'd ever buy a new car, again, new cars are the biggest scam out there, but people keep buying.

What is the real difference between getting a new car and a used car? Well, when you buy that new car, you are going to loose 5-15% of the value when you drive it off the lot, on top of that initial loss, if you get financing, you're going to be paying even more. For the used car, well, there's a chance it is going to be a lemon, but if you buy from a dealer, you may have some legal ground there.

What did I buy? Well, when I was looking, I had to buy right away, because my previous car was pretty much dead. I went on craigslist and searched for truck for $0-$500, the only thing that came up that day was a low mileage 1985 Toyota for $400; that was 2.5 years ago and I'm still driving the POS, I've put about $1200 into repairs and maintenance. If you split the cost up per ownership time, I guess I've paid about $90 per month. If a Ford Ranger or F-150 or similar Chevy truck came up that day, I would be driving that now.

If I was going to buy a car that wasn't a rotting POS? I'd probably buy a Chevy Malibu, I drove one as a rental awhile back, good pickup and quite comfortable. If I recall correctly they've gotten decent reviews.

That's why I suggest the Chevy El Camino/Ford Ranchero style of vehicles so strongly. Dirtbikes and most motorcycles are easily loaded WITHOUT A RAMP, and the bed is just the right size for damn near every domestic task in which a trunk will simply not do. Fill it with bark, tow a boat with it, use it to transport those bulky pieces of equipment etc. And because you're not hauling all of that un-necessary metal around, you get both good mileage and good performance, with an outstanding power-weight ratio.

Although for full disclosure, this past weekend I effortlessly crammed a FULLSIZE Craftsman Chipper-shredder in the ass-end of my '03 3-door VW Golf TDI's turbodiesel's hatch- which just goes to show you that size can be deceiving and most American truck and car buyers are being duped into buying WAAAYYY more vehicle than they really need.

Buy Ford. They have good products and are fighting to stay alive and independent without Uncle Sugar. Anyone who guys GM (Government Motors) is nuts. I am sure Obama and crew will indirectly subside the price so they are attractive and artificially price competitive to honest car companies but right here right now GM has become the test bed poster child of socialism. The biggest car company in America has been nationalized just like it is done in a bannana republic. The other big 3, Chrysler, has been turned over to the UAW. Don't help. Help the company that bet on America. Ford.

I have been a Chevy man most of my life. Their trucks have been good to me. Right now I have an '03 3/4 Ton HD 4X4. I have 92K on it and if I wash it, I still get compliments on it's looks. I am also troubled by GM accepting bailout money. They are ripe for government takeover. :ded: I don't think I could buy another Chevy under those circumstances. I have issues with Ford about their support of the GLBT agenda. I always liked 'Yotas, and my wife is on her third or fourth one. She has had no major problems with any of them. When it comes right down to it, buy what you like, but shop around and score yourself a great deal.

i personally like my suzuki alot. but jsut so you don't have to worry about buying american, i believe there is a law that car companies have to provide parts for a specified amount of time, and most pontiacs are based off of chevy or builck vehicles. so a pontiac would probably be a good deal about now.

either way i payed 21k for my grand vitara xsport including an extended 10yr/100,000mile bumper to bumper warranty. i have 4x4 with a low range and get about 16 mile to a gallon, which is ok for a full time 4x4. i can also give support to the honda element my mom drives one and it is a great and relatively easy to work on car.

I've got three Fords and a Dodge and all of them have been basically trouble free with not much more than gas and oil changes.

Regular maintainance keeps them going good.

My Dodge is a 96 Ram 1500,my Fords are a 96 F250 Crew,99 Taurus,and 02 Explorer.

All but the explorer are well into the 100,000 miles already.

I've personally always had better luck with Fords and shitty luck with the few GMs I've owned.Besides, now that Obongo wants to run GM they wont be around too long, and I certainly wouldn't trust this government to warranty my car.

I just got another Nissan 4X4 King Cab XE this week... for about 1500 less than the going rate for one of this year/mileage...

125K miles, really nice shape... needs a few things, of course... but the interior is mint, and it runs/drives really nice!

I should get another 200K out of it, if I do my part!
