SOPMOD 254 Posted June 9, 2009 Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 (edited) It's an all steel copy of an 870 that despite the rough machining marks reminds me more of of the old 870 Police and military shotguns of 30+ years ago.They have a little squared area at the top rear of the receiver but are otherwise identical and interchangeable with an 870.I know a guy who bought one just to keep in the trunk of his car but after shooting it and messing with it decided to trick it out just like his custom Remington because it was "that good". I think these shotguns are a "Chinese Secret" like the Norinco 1911s and M14s that had forged frames and were way better than their price would suggest and like those items one day everyone will get wise and they will cost more money used than they do brand new today. In fact between the guys I know who have them and this thread I think I will buy a couple of them to stick in various locations loaded up an ready to use. The only weak spot I have heard of is that the magazine tube spring is kinda chincy but for $8 you can put a better one in it and never look back because you just saved $200-300 vs the price of a Remington. Their ad says it is a remington but I think it is an H&R . Dicks does not have guns listed on their site so I can't supply a link. I think I'll stop in to today and check them out. Spur 0 Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 I've been shopping for a HD shotgun for some time and I was just about to plop down $350 for an 870 when I got that flyer from Dick's in the mail. When I saw the $199 price on the H&R PP, I started searching the net for reviews. After extensively researching posts and reviews dating back to 2003, I could only dig up one negative review. 99% of the reviews I read are glowing about this shotgun. FYI, H&R is a Marlin company and Marlin was acquired by Remington back in 2007. Thus, it appears that the PP is a Chinese-made, Remington sanctioned replica of the 870, sans barrel. However, Dick's should not have put the name "Remington" in the photo box that also reads Pardner Protector. Also, from what I saw in the add, the shotgun pictured there is the 870. Whatever the case may be, $199 for this shotgun is a veritable steal. I'm going to buy one tomorrow and use the $150 savings to buy lots of ammo. Also, I thought it was another one of their policies to not sell ammo at the same time as a gun purchase, but I picked up a brick of .22 at the same time, no problems. I was also escorted to the car by a very nice, large and burly salesman named Maurice. Maurice was gracious enough to carry my shotgun and a double bagged quantity of 200 rounds of various shotgun shells. Seriously, I haven't had that kind of service in a long time. It kind of made me feel special. I wonder if they'll do that when I go back to buy some fishing gear... The Pardner Protector feels very solid, much moreso than a Mossberg, IMO. I can't wait to blow up some old washing machines with it. By the way, the 10/22 is a great gun. I remember buying mine 22 years ago at WalMart for $135 and it has been failure free, except for the time I used a lame Ramline magazine with it (that sucker is jam city). This thing looks like some kind of internal piece, almost like a trigger assembly part. I figured the manual would instruct me on what to do with it, but there's no mention of it in the manual. It's theoretically for the protection of the other customers, to prevent someone from purchasing a weapon in the store, loading it and robbing the joint. Yep, asinine reasoning, what's to stop someone from loading it in the car and walking right back in, and who would be stupid enough to legitimately purchase a weapon then immediately use it to commit a crime which would prevent them from legally purchasing weapons? Reciever is thicker (or stronger or stiffer or something, just seems tougher), is perfectly reliable with everything I've put through it, added a mag extension to it and it rocks the house. I bought one of the 28 inch barrel ones a few years back for my dad. Fairly smooth and well built. He does comment that its heavy as hell by the end of the day (and I agree). I think I paid 165 for that one. I have a Jing An pump gun that I got really dirt cheap back 8 years ago, similar build quality. Came with 5 chokes for 75.00. But its a M37 copy not an 870.
